After making a track... what next?

Im only looking for advice, as im new at this, so please be easy on me...

Im after getting into electronic music big time over the past year. I come from a musical background and listened to everything from radiohead to mogwai...and everything else in between. Over the past year I have fallen in love with the likes of Apparat, James Holden, Nathan Fake, Daniel Avery (by the way, has anyone heard of him? He's amazing!)..... Aaaaanyway...

Im getting into actually producing my own stuff. Id like to make stuff like the people ive mentioned above. I have no idea about labels, or getting my stuff 'out there' ...where ever that is!

After i make a track...what should i do next? Soundcloud, youtube...etc? Should i send my tracks to people...and if so..who? Im also a girl so hopefully there'll be some appreciation for this kind of music coming from a girl in such a male dominated scene.

Soundcloud is the way to go in terms of getting general feedback on your tracks. There's a soundcloud sticky here where you can get opnions from fellow producers here.
You can of course send your stuff to labels but you would need to be very persistent as they would recieve thousands of tracks on a regular basis.
Being female might help but I wouldn't bet on it. Be prepared for some patronising comments though, like 'it's pretty good, for a girl'. Your productions should be judged on musical merit alone.
I'm a fan on Nathan Fake myself so I'd be interested to hear what you've come up with so far :)

Without wanting to be sexist or anything, and you have effectively said that you want to use being female to help...
You should make a youtube video of you playing your track, whether it be you making it look like you're doing something with a midi controller or spinning it on decks or whatever -- but if you take some inspiration from

....you see what I'm getting at.. and you'll give people a reason to pick your video over all the others showing up for them. Make a twitter account, soundcloud and a facebook page too, link to them all and hope for the best

Whats the "oh dear" for... theres more males in this scene. Fact. Its like anything, if something a bit different pops up then itll get notice. Simple as. Im not making music cos im a girl, or cos i think i dont have to have talent or whatever, all im saying is if I (or any other under represented group) gets attention cos theyre slightly different then thats fine by me. I am using a pysdo name anyway so people wont know whether im a girl or not.

But thanks for the sleazy video. Oh dear.

Post your track on soundcloud so we have an idea of what labels might be interested.

If its good George will help get it out there

I presume you mean pseudonym. The oh dear is for the fact that you somehow think being a woman is akin to having some disability that would make your artistic output even more impressive.

Anyway, you haven't made any music yet. Think about all this stuff when you actually have something to give the world. Cart before horse etc.

If you manage to make anything half as good as these guys, then getting it out there won't be a problem.

This method of folding shirts is new to me so will try it later.

Anyway, to the OP and the topic
So, what are your thoughts on doing live work? Taking your tracks and building a reputation as someone who produces great music and can perform that music with style.

My experience as someone who produces electronic music is that it's the reputation I've slowly earned doing gigs and festivals over the years that generates the interest which translates into further invites and ultimately sales.

It's the case for many artists today that they earn far more money and achieve greater exposure from playing live than from the record sales used to produce the music they perform. That's also my experience.

I've also found that it's while gigging that you get a real handle on what actually works with your music. If you perform a track and the audience enjoys it then you have a better idea as to whether it will work as a release. I'm sure we've all had tracks that we thought sounded great but didn't work for an audience and likewise tracks that we were iffy about and which an audience loved.

At the extreme end, there's a real joy at taking a bunch of sketches and improvising them in front of an audience, creating the track as you go, recording the results for chopping up and mixing later for release.

Finally, doing live work helps you build contacts and gives you the confidence to talk about your work as well as bounce it off your peers and learn some techniques to improve it. After that, everything sort of falls into place I've found.

I'd not be too concerned about the gender thing. My experience is that gender is far less an issue in electronic music than in some genres. It all comes down to how professionally you get the job done I've found.

Best of luck with your music. There's some great folks on this forum who are more than happy to lend a hand to someone who is dedicated to their craft.

@ Old Gregg... Thanks for the sound advice.

Yeah ive got tonnes of material written. From actual live recordings with guitars, pianos, drums etc... to dance tracks made on sh*tty programmes. Im in the process of getting a mac with ableton/ or logic so i can actually sit down and put it all together decently. Have you's heard Daniel Avery's 'The Eagle'...with that bass line (amazing) Thats what i wanna do..mashing live instruments with electronic beats, makes it a little more organic. Ah im not really hung up on the gender thing..wish i never opened my mouth now haha! Just meant that cos theres feck all girls in the scene, there might be interest to see am i any way good at all. Look at your one Grimes.. not sure if im into her or not..but she's doing average stuff and she's getting a sh*t load of attention.

Lets pretend i never mentioned gender...pretty please. Ill be good, i promise :)

tbh, the gender thing isn't half as bad as the 'i haven't made this music yet, i'm on another thread seeing if anyone wants to do the actual producing for me, and i'm pondering career matters' subtext.

I'm not trying to be mean, just explaining my grievance.

Ah don't mind jt, if he had tits he'd be using them for self gain too. Unless of course he has, and they're just not purrrty, in which case he's just bitter.

Im leaving this thread now. All i asked was for advice on what to do after i make a track. And i got some. Thanks to those who actually DID give me advice. Oh and JTsuite, ive made music before, and i dont have another thread looking for some to produce for me!! Silly you for reading it wrong :) Im looking for someone to collaborate and gig with...I only have 2 hands. although we are excellent multi-taskers i'm not sure id be able to play bass, synth, sing, and use a sampler at the same time! If only.

    Peace out.

Huh? Awh has my post caused you grievance? Awh im sorry pet. You must be a sensitive little so and so.

This thread is about me asking advice on what to do after making a track. I have tonnes of material done, as ive already stated in a previous post. As far as career matters goes? What are you on about? And why are you so grieved? Because i said that its a male dominated scene? And where did i say I have no music made yet? Ive already stated that i have tonnes of music made. I was in a band, and our youtube channel has over 500,000 views. In this particular genre, as its the electronic and DJ'ing thread, I wanted advice on how to go about getting my music heard. Being in a band, and coming from an actual gigging background with actual instruments, I thought the avenues for electronic music might be quite different. And when did i say i wanted someone else to do the producing for me?????
In another thread where you asked for a knobtwiddler.

Without getting into it to deeply (a few others on here will verify if you're really curious), I intimately know what it's like to go from a rock and roller (played in more bands than you could shake a stick at for years and years) to electronic 'artist'.
Right now, rather than spend your time figuring out how you'll get famous, make some bloody music (the type of music you want to make but haven't yet because you're admittedly new to the electronic game) and then look at actually getting it heard.

The gender thing is an annoyance because when genuinely talented female djs/producers/artists come along, the slew of 'oh look i'm a girl' artists devalue what they do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 411 ✭✭JajaD

Im not looking at how to get famous? Did u not read the title of my thread? I wanted advice on what to do with music after it has been made. I already know what electronic stuff i want to do, as ive already stated, and ive already stated that im not new to making music, just electronic stuff. My knobtwiddler phrase is jovial term....ya know...being light hearted. Tough crowd.

I have loads of material made, bits and pieces that i will put together when i get my mac. When thats done ill be putting it all up on soundcloud (as someone advise me to do on this), which is all the advice i wanted. No need for the big negative buzz.

The smiley face at the end of your sig makes it look like every comment you make is a jokey comment. #justsayin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 411 ✭✭JajaD

    Oh dear :)

Ah no, but seriously (look, no smiley face)...i absoloutely love electronic music. I only came on here to look for advice. None of my friends like this music, so its hard to get advice anywhere. The bits of music that ive already done are good, or so id like to think...ive just to put it all together when i get my sh*t together.. (my laptop is currently being held together by one screen wire!)...

Im not looking to get famous and that comment is just sh*t. Ive been playing music since ive been able hold a guitar and have been playing synth for the past 6 years. I now love electronic music and want to put what ive already done, down on logic( which im hoping to use to produce my own stuff)...

I look forward to hearing what you guys think...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 411 ✭✭JajaD

REID's 'I dont know'...is where i wanna go. Daniel Avery's The Eagle.. Death in Vegas' Your loft my acid (which was co-written by Katie Stelmanis, the person behind Austra)... thats what i wanna write more towards.. The stuff im doing now is more like a band like Screen Vinyl Image or school of seven bells. More 'band' like but im aiming to get more like REID, AUSTRA, DIV (fearless remixes) etc....

    Aaaaaanywho!

Yeah theres nothing more annoying. I heard a deadly track the other night...and i turned to my mates and then i was like "Ah...never mind"... :( The stuff i hear or learn of is from me spending hours online every night listening to tracks. And the only people i know in music are people who play whelans, or the workmans etc etc.. they dont use samplers or they dont know anything about electronic music, so thats why i come on to things like boards to look for advice. My friends like Rhianna, and Lady GaGa, whereas me, i hear of gigs like Death in Vegas, or John Talabot and i literally have to beg one of them to come with me, while they stand there going "this is ****e"..."can we go to D2 after?"... FML

Would you not just spike their drinks with a bit of MDMA and push them down into the basement of the Twisted Pepper. I reckon they might come around to enjoying a bit of techno then.

    Make new friends.

I've only two mates who'd be into electronic music. One lives in London, one in Madrid.

Which leaves me in the undesirable position of hanging around with the kunts from here.
