I have seen him present it before once or twice.

No harm, he is the best interviewer around. Miriam has gone downhill recently.

I'd say ratings for Primetime have dropped since the 'Mission to Prey' pay out. Pat Kenny is a great addition to the programme and it could be RTE's way of saving this programme and giving it some credibility.

Miriam O'Callaghan would probably be very good on the Frontline. They should swap.

    No he is not.
There should be new blood brought in. These old fogies have had their day. Greedy sods.

Great to see someone who knows the £uck what he's talking about, he's the only one in RTE who does, bit wooden at times though

No, Pat's good at what he does. It's such a shame he wasted most of the last twenty years conducting cringe-worthy interviews with vacuous celebs. He's the nearest we have to a Dimbleby.

Ah Tayto Lover, I'm shocked :eek::eek:

I think Pat Kenny is one of RTE's greatest assets, he is an incredibly intelligent man and he is always so well researched and prepared for his interviews.

    Nonsense.

You don't kick out the best in the business just because he has a few grey hairs.

Pat does a great job at these type of programs.

I think he was drafted in to tackle Phil "Phat Head" Hogan, not sure RTE are allowed actually call him a w***er on tv though. Not sure Kenny is the man to tackle him either, throw Sean O'Rourke into the ring with Hogan I say !

Never rated Kenny at all. Felt he was always very biased and pushed his own agendas.

Ah, the few grey hairs only make him more distinguished. In fact I think he is very attractive for his age, it is hard to believe he is in his 60s

I couldn't disagree more. If you want a biased interviewer who pushes his own agenda then switch over to TV3 at 11pm. Although you probably think he is another of the 'old fogies have had their day'

He could host a show called "Past It" or "Back to the Future" especially for all the usual R.T.E. pensioners like Nell McCafferty, Mammy O'Rourke and Nora Owen. I once saw a grave stone with the legend "Not dead but sleeping" another name that would suit.

Nora Owen belongs to TV3 :p (Midweek and Celebrity Mastermind).

I'm more than a little surprised that the wonderful Marie Louise O'Donnell didn't appear on your list :D:D:D

Never thought of that, but it'd be a good fit given their skill-sets and perhaps provide both formats with a shot in the arm.

So, back on topic, is Kenny filling in for someone or has he now jumped into Tuesday nights aswell? Does anyone know?

He has appeared on the show a few times in the last couple of months. I'd say that he is only filling in when Richard Crowley and Keelan Shanley are not available.

I'ts a funny thing about money and RTE MrsD....

They can never let it go and retire completely imo.............:(

No-one in RTE ever seems to let the gauntlet go and let the new blood in....more the ego and letting go of the power trip..........

I understand what you mean but lets take a look at Gaybo.

His two programmes -'For One Night Only' and 'The Meaning of Life' have very high viewership figures. I have no issue with someone staying on if the audience wants them. It is obvious that people still want to see Gaybo on their screens. Even when Mike Murphy returned last year with his series of one to one interviews, viewers tuned in in their hundreds of thousands.

Sure why retire when you are still as good as ever?

As MrsD says, Mike Murphy, Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny are the best in the business. If RTE didn't want them you can be sure TV3 would give them a gig, and then there would be uproar here that RTE don't keep their talent.

Agree with Tayto, Kenny should be put out to grass now. good on current affairs but definately pushed his own agendas. new blood needed.
a cival servant on €500k + per annum simply cannot perform a proper interview with a government minister and ask the hard questions, simple as.
Ever wondered why Enda has always refused to appear with VB..??

By your logic (which I don't agree with in any way), presenters close to retirement age would have less to lose career wise than their younger colleagues, so would be more likely to ask tough questions.

Does this logic apply worldwide, that the more successful an interviewer is, the more he/she is paid, and the less effective they are?

What agenda do you think Pat Kenny is pushing, and could you give some examples?

    Supposing, Just Supposing..............

As Pk is close to retirement age and (as it happens) maybe his pension is not coming up to scratch AND he has to do a bit more to supplement it i.e. little bit extra work he is going to all the current affairs he can do???....which, bty, he does so very well.....

But it is like the dog with the bone...........Just a thought???

Registered as a contractor and the main reason being for tax purposes.
similar to Bill O'Herlihy et al. this way these guys can cream it off.
    Are you aware of this..???
The wage he receives from RTE is the proceeds of TV licence fees, ie our cash. quite similar to being a civil servant.

Negotiating a favourable deal for themselves, while availing of whatever avenues are open to them to reduce tax liabilities would seem to make perfect sense.

The DG & Controller of Radio are well positioned to adopt a markedly more robust approach to contract negotiation with marquee talent. It'd be wholly appropriate for them to do so at the next opportunity.

The public purse recompenses thousands of individual contractors for the provision of professional services, across all sectors of the State. I'd imagine their terms differ quite substantially from their contemporaries within the Civil Service.

Your initial point suggested some conflict of interest - that Kenny as a well paid 'civil servant' is somehow reluctant to put hard questions to Government Ministers. Conspiracy theory stuff, that simply doesn't hold up imo. Were he to engage in such folly, the end result would see him hosting 'A Prayer at Bedtime' between now and retirement.

He's only filling in for Richard Crowley while he's on holidays. Claire Byrne did it last week.

I would also consider him by far and away the most competent current affairs broadcaster in the country.
