Evil Dead [Remake]

    First Bruce Campbell said
Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.

Since then has been coming thick and fast:
    Director is Federico Alvarez
And the press release is in this article.

I suppose it's good that Raimi and co. are producing but, Jesus, what the hell is this fixation with re-makes? Where's has all the creativity and originality gone?

They're probably re-making it because they're scared that a fourth one will tarnish the great trilogy. Whatever their reason's are, I'm interested to where this goes.

Also, Diablo Cody is rewriting the script. :( I'm a bit worried about that.

So it looks like The Evil Dead remake is finally going ahead, after so many false dawns for sequels pretty much for the last twenty years (Yea Army of Darkness is that old now) they're remaking it. It's got Raimi, Tapert and Campbell all aboard as producers, some guy named Fede Alvarez is writing and directing with Diablo Cody(Balls) polishing up the script also.

I don't really know what to make of this, its good that Raimi and co will be so involved but at the same time why don't they just make a sequel rather than retreading the original, I can't see anyone else playing Ash apart from Campbell, unless it's only going to be a remake in terms of premise and not characters. I'm a huge fan of the original trilogy(particularly Evil Dead II) and as you can tell I'm quite conflicted about the whole affair! I'd actually take an adaptation of the musical over an inferior remake!

more here including a short film by the director that supposedly got him the job: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50368

Diablo Cody. I'm sure she won't do it in the vein of Juno (i.e. unrealistic, "witty" dialogue) I haven't seen Jennifer's Body, maybe she showed potential there that would lead to her being given the responsibility of fixing the a script for the Evil Dead.

There are many many things wrong with this.

    Diablo Cody? FFS!

But Evil Dead without Raimi directing and Campbell starring is not Evil Dead. It may be something, but Evil Dead it is not.

Also, we already have a perfectly excellent Evil Dead remake. It's called Evil Dead 2.

Yeah, I forgot that Evil Dead is pretty much a (brilliant) remake of the first.

The Diablo Cody thing really has me worried, I actually liked Juno but I think that was more down to the director and Jennifer's Body was woeful. From reading the article on ain't it cool I get the impression they'll go more for the darker tone of The Evil Dead rather than the more slapstick approach of the sequels. It'll most likely end up being a generic cabin in the woods style horror movie.

The short movie the guy made is actually pretty cool, here's an embed:

    Ahh FFS.

I wonder sometimes if people actually watch remakes,
kind of make a point of avoiding them myself,
still haven't given Let Me In a look and don't think I will.

I'm happy that Raimi and co are involved in producing this remake. I hope the punky asthetic of the original translates over to the remake. If the film doesn't use outragous camerawork and doesn't push the limits of on-screen gore, I can see little point of remaking it.

    Of course they do.

    Step 1

Take a highly regarded genre classic

    Step 2

Add a cast of preposterously good looking American teens

    Step 3

Fill it with "witty" pop culture one liners and add a dance/rap soundtrack

    Step 4

Market it to retards with a "menacing" teaser trailer

    Step 5

    $$$$$

Nothing surprises me anymore so I dont give a fúck about a remake,I will not support it nor will I ever pay to watch it.

I can already hear the rage mounting.

I can watch and usually enjoy any kind of horror themed crap, but even I couldnt say Diablo Codys' "Jennifers Body" was an okay film.

So what they are presenting is a remake of a remake of a well worn genre "haunted house in the woods".

I would rather an actual evil dead 4 or a feature film of "Evil Dead: The Musical" :D

Didnt Campbell say a few years ago that if Evil Dead was to be remade he told Raimi that he did not want it to feature the character of Ash because he "is" Ash?

Sounds familiar alright. Well if that's the case this will only be Evil Dead by name and nothing else.

Federico Alvarez, the director, has written the screenplay but it's being"polished" by Diablo Cody. I presume this means she's turning all the characters into hipsters.

"Honest to blog, we told you not to read from the Necronomicon Ash! Somebody hand me that HOTDOG SHAPED cellphone there and we'll call the exterminator!"

I actually like Juno for what it is, but just no. I already love the balance of the first two Evil Dead films - horror with comic undertones and comedy with horror undertones respectively - and disrupting that with another take on the story seems silly.

Well he's said that Evil Dead 4 is just about to start production, so we just have to see which Army Of Darkness ending they use.

Edit: sorry that's meant to be the script is being worked on, not that the film is going into production.

Continuity has never been a major concern for this series :P

Also, speaking of remakes, I saw the Evil Dead musical in Canada a few years ago. Funny but weird!

I'm hoping that if the remake of Evil Dead is successful that they go ahead with the plans for part 4 and that it's a smash hit. That way Campbell could become something of a name to the studios who decide that it's time to polish off Roger Avery's Phantasm script and that Don Cascarelli can finially finish off the series.

I've rarely gone from excitement to disappointment in such a short space of time as I did with the news of the new Evil Dead film. The fact that Raimi & Campbell won't be directing/starring and that Diablo Cody has been brought onboard to revise the script seems like it's destined for failure. I fear that if the film does badly it'll be the nail in the coffin for any chance of a sequel to the original films.

Not to mention they might finally get around to making Bubba Nodferatu.

I think thats highly wishful thinking though, the remake going ahead is the final nail in the coffin of Evil Dead 4 in my eyes, whether it turns out to be good or bad. If it does well then it's highly unlikely there'll be a sequel to the original series made, they'll make a sequel to the remake pure and simple.

Bubba Nosfetatu is going ahead, It's due to shoot after John Dies at the End but Campbell won't be involved. Ron Perlman is going to be taking over ad the King and Paul Giamatti is co starring. I've absolutly no problem with Perlman in the role, like Campbell he's a B movie icon and coincidently enough both men now have highly rated TV shows.

Evil Dead 4 is most likely never going to happen, far too long has passed and while the series has a fanbase is it really big enough to ensure that an R rated sequel will do the business. Raimi also has so many things in the works that much like Del Toro it will be years before he gets around to it. Hell at one stage Del Toro estimated that he wouldnt be able to shoot Hellboy 3 till at Lear 2015 if not 2017 and now he doesn't think he'll ever make it. Hopefully if he doesn't direct someone else will and Del Toro can Shepard it through as a producer, be a shame for the series never to finish propely, after all the last film built up to a final film which promised goodness of all out pure evilness.

I always get the impression Bruce Campbell is best off with Raimi. He's had a few hits on his own - Bubba HoTep being the obvious one - but having seen My Name is Bruce and really not liking it, I think Raimi is the best at channeling his smarmy, self-aware characteristics. Like Herzog and Kinski, they both come into their own when working together - TBH, the Campbell cameos in the Spiderman films, frivolous and silly as they are, are close to highlights of the series!

It's the mix of Raimi's inventive, frantic directorial style and Campbell's brilliantly ludicrous persona that make Evil Dead what it is. Minus those two elements, I am full of fear.

    ^ Ted Raimi speaks briefly
He also can’t say for sure right now whether he’ll be involved in the impending EVIL DEAD redux: “I don’t even know if [Diablo Cody has] finished the script yet. I can say this: I think the new EVIL DEAD is going to be fantastic. I believe Rob Tapert is producing it again, and I’m fairly certain it will be shot in New Zealand. Rob is very fond of that country and shooting there, and I’m guessing some American actors will probably go over there for it, but other than that, I don’t know anything about it.”

    http://www.totalfilm.com/news/new-synopsis-for-the-evil-dead-remake

Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake has released a new synopsis, courtesy of Sony, and from the sounds of it, the plot will stick incredibly closely to that of the original.

We had initially heard that Diablo Cody’s script would recast one of the characters as a recovering drug addict, with the trip to the woods designed as a kind of cold turkey getaway, but there’s no mention of that whatsoever in the new blurb.

    Check it out below:

“In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”

All sounds very familiar, doesn’t it? Perhaps the various deviations from the plot are being kept under wraps for the sake of simplicity, but given that practically everyone knows the basic premise of The Evil Dead, it seems odd just to trot it out again in the new synopsis.

One thing we have been promised is gore, with Sam Raimi recently claiming the remake is “so bloody it’ll make your head spin”. Let’s also hope there are a few novel plot twists in there to keep things interesting when the film opens in the UK on 12 April 2013.

    Another remake!

Although it has to be said, in my opinion I don't mind remakes as long as they can add something to the original masterpiece. That rarely happens though and you end up with a good, but pointless product in the end.

I realise there is a thread, but it's over a year old.

Wasnt Raimi heavily involved in this and has given it his endorsement. Expects it to be much darker and more akin to a real horror than the slapstick horror of the Evil Dead series. Also its set in the present day years after the events with Ash so I dont think its technically a remake... I expect it to be a very different movie built around a similar premise. I'm looking forward to it

I was thinking about why Camelot (the tv series) failed. I've never bothered to watch it but read some of the plots to the episodes. Essentially it was Spartacus sex and violence applied to Arthurian legend? So it was a rethreading of an overly familiar story done to death. It's boring. In the same way I can't find myself getting excited by yet another remake, this time of Evil Dead which was perfect the first time round, it may tank because it's just the same old territory and no one cares enough to go and see it. It just invites a resounding meh/who cares.

Evil Dead was great and all but its not really the film that stands out in the series. The second one is by far the true classic out of the three of them but I guess maybe they thought it too iconic to go messing around with?

Didn't see a thread for this.

Leaked trailer below (Cam footage from Comic Con)

Looks like LOTS of blood and gore :)
Well, now I can say I know what Diablo Cody was referring to when she called the screenplay for the Evil Dead remake unbelievably violent. Featuring all sorts of grimly realized self-mutilation and bodily decomposition, this is a decidedly humorless horror affair according to writer-director Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack!). So where did Cody fit in? "I was nervous to take the job because I thought ‘Ugh, I’m gonna get **** for this.’ People are not gonna like this, because all people know of me is Juno and they think I’m gonna pollute Evil Dead with wacky dialogue and cute stuff and folk music," said Cody last year in an interview with Collider. "I understand what this is. I’m interested in storytelling here and making it scary and good and true to the original." But as it turns out, Cody had fairly little to do with many of the film's more horrific brushes. Bruce Campbell clarified her involvement earlier today during an interview for Hollywood.com, indicating that "she did a pass so that we could put it in this century, and have people talk like twentysomethings rather than middle ages old men." Screenwriting credits primarily fall to Fede Alvarez, but also (in addition to Cody) include Sam Raimi and Panic Attack! co-writer Rodo Sayagues Mendez.

From the looks of this trailer, Evil Dead may just be the sort of rare remake that lives up to its classic name. The film opens April 12th, 2013 and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore. Synopsis and leaked trailer below.

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

So basically they've removed all the humour, cheese and charm that made the original a genre classic, and instead created an interchangeable gore-porn film? Pass; in fact, kill it with fire I say.

Might have had a chance if Cody had in-fact been involved, instead of her just taking the money and running on a script review.
