I see NI are struggling for a team
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19942970

So, how many goals do you think Ronnie will get in this one?

    Another guaranteed hat-trick?

I sense a bad beating on the cards.

After the German performance, I don't think we're in any position to be asking such questions.

Expect us to be absolutely slaughtered :(

    Portugal -4 is 9/2, think I'll have a slice of that, -3 is 11/5.

Have Portugal ever played like people expect when qualifiying for a tournament? They lost last Friday against Russia.

Kinda hope NI get something out of this because of the attitude of the thread :P

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Id fancy N.I to do better against portugal than we did against Germany, I tell you under O'Neill no matter what the score they won't be camped in their box hoofing the ball up front, as limited as they are they actually try to do something in possesion.

Best of luck, with that said I'd go for 5-1/4-0

No, they are consistent under performers.
Although I wouldn't hold not getting a result in Russia against them. Don't Russia have a ridiculously good home record stretching back a few years?

i think there should be a 'How many goals will the Faroes score against Rep.of Ireland' thread. :P

watched the game on Friday against Russia and they didnt create much, their final pass let them down a lot but if they only get a few chances against Northern Ireland they will punish them.

Problem with Portugal is that nearly all their good players are wingers, and you can only have so many of them on a pitch at the one time. Ronaldo won't get the service he does at Real. Similar to Argentina and Messi, so many quality forwards, but deeper players just aren't of the level of the likes of Tevez, Aguero, Di Maria, Higuain, Messi...

In fairness the three Portugal used in the centre during the Euros (Moutinho, Veloso, Meireles) were quality and probably did almost as much as Ronaldo to get that team to the semis. By comparison star winger Nani was a letdown.

    That surprises you?

Saying Nani is inconsistent is an under statement.

    he won't get too many
i don't think Portugal will get too many goals there not that creative

Portugal could probably beat NI 6-0 or more if they really wanted but they don't have the same relentless merciless mentality that the Germans are known for against weaker opposition. 3-0

That's an incredibly disrespectful post regarding the standard for football in Northern Ireland.

    6.

What's with Nani been singled out here ?

He had 2 assists in 5 games . Only 4 people had more than that .

After the German performance, I don't think we're in any position to be asking such questions.

As my username suggests, I am from NI and want them to win, I wasn't trying to be smart or have a laugh at them with my question.

Similarly we shouldn't start saying San Marino will top their group.

You don't have to be having a go or be crazy to suggest it might be a similar mismatch

Portugal looking pretty toothless after 30 minutes so far.

    1-0 NI !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

That was a well worked counter attack,

Evans started it off, having a solid game,

Nice finish by McGinn chipping it in.

    Crazy stuff.

Portugal still 4/9 in the bookies too. :P

    Wow, Ronaldo got unlucky there!

EDIT: It wasn't Ronaldo, the defender got extremely lucky!

N.Ireland 8.6 on betfair, is it worth a punt? how is the match going since they scored?

Northern Ireland had a great phase of play breaking from the back.

It'll be unlikely for us to hold out for the remaining 50 minutes.

    Worth a punt though.

    I love Niall McGinn :)

What were the odds before kick off on the North to be winning at half time?

I'm probably gonna lump on Portugal at HT.

Come on, the Nordies. This brings me back to the days when Ireland were sh!te and the Ulster XI got to world cups.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Not sure why many people were expecting a hammering. Remember, Portugal needed to come from behind to scrape a 2-1 win against Luxembourg.

You'd have got 33/1 on Northern Ireland to be leading at HT and Portugal to win at FT.

Wee tenner on that would have went down nicely.

50s on NI to win both halves. :D

As OP, you can guess I didn't see this result at Half-time!

Lets hope they can hang on.

    Germany not relentless tonight

    4-0 up, draw 4-4:eek:

NI have a chance here, the Portuguese have no pace and their attacks are being soaked up quite easily.

NI wont hold out though, they arent doing anything when they get the ball, just lumping it up and into space rather than a man
