But I have to admit - from historical precedents, it's hard to stop once you get going. Then maybe that might not be a bad thing.)

You may be the most intelligent troll I've ever seen.

To be fair krd - I think he was just doing me the courtesy of pointing me in the direction of a summary.

A "bring back hanging" article in the Indo........hrrrmmmmmm.

The thing with Johnson, is once you ask the question, well, what are the practicalities. Before you get into any of the wider issues. You have the construction of special facilities - death row, as well as the execution facilities. A lot of specialist staff - on special premium pay. The costs of the legal specialty. There are some American states and they claim it only costs them a million to execute someone. They're not telling the truth. By the time we got the first guy to the chair, or whatever we have, it could have cost tens of millions.

It's not like we could get away with a rope and stool. The US states that still have the death penalty are likely to abandon it on the basis of costs.

The Chinese do a Ryan Air, no frills, version. They take a minibus full of the condemned to a football stadium, blindfold them, make them kneel. Then shoot them in the back of the head. If you have a morbid curiosity - the videos are on the internet.

Where does the cost come from?

We already have slop buckets in the prisons so just throw them in a cell with no electricity and give them a few slices of bread and water and 24 hour a day lockdown, what's that? 15 cent maybe

You could cut the amount of prison wardens needed for that ward hugely, so that a load of large salaries that don't need to be paid.
