Can you do weight training at home ?

Well I know you can do it at home if you have the equipment but is it effective ?

I am 'mid 40s' female with a bit of weight to lose. I do a good bit of walking so not looking to a gym for cardio I just think at my age it might be good to do a bit of weight training. Generally speaking I find the gym boring but will do it for the weights if it will be beneficial or could I buy some small weights and do a routine at home ?

I find gyms to be a bit intimidating and there is also the cost factor.

So do I need to do weights at all? If so can I do something at home or would a gym be better ?

    Cheers

Engaging in any exercise that raises your heart rate is always beneficial -your body cant differentiate between lifting dumbbells or 5 litres of water, only the expenditure of energy it takes to do it. So yes, if you lift a substantial enough weight whilst doing enough reps, it will be effective.

Exercise is called a work-out for a reason -you need to feel yourself working or else work harder

you can start with bodyweight exercises, no need to buy weights really; for example this program is very good - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056185716 - starts very easy and progresses as you improve

Thought about this too but problem for me would be actually doing the work at home.
The distraction of something on the telly or the phone ringing or someone calling and then you are putting off a session and then it doesn't get done.

Allocating a time and going to the gym regularly working hard for the hour or whatever suits me best. I know it costs but when you break it down per week its not that much.

Interesting to hear you mention small weights - it seems the conventional thinking that the majority of women are wasting their time by lifting too little weight. Its just something to keep in mind.

As a male in a similar age range to yourself and who started training 18 months ago I would say that to achieve results weight/resistance training is essential and should probably take up close to 50% of your time
