Mandatory deduction from deposit for sanitation costs

I gave notice that I was ending tenancy today and asking about deposit refund. I received a reply saying that was fine, standard type stuff about deposit being returned pending an audit, and then mentioning a mandatory €29 deduction towards sanitation costs. They haven't actually inspected the apartment; nor was I intending on leaving it in a condition that needs any cleaning (if they actually mean sanitization). I've been letting a room rathar than the whole premises, and I know they never did any cleaning after any tenants I shared with before left.

So I assume this is them chancing their arm and not something they're entitled to do at all...correct?

Correct. When leaving you should take dated pictures of the room (preferably with a copy of the day's paper as proof).

    Definitely chancing their arm there!
Only way i can think of them getting away with it is if you signed a contract(doubtful due to you just renting a room) agreeing that when you moved out you would pay this cost - if you signed a contract stating that you would then you are binded to pay!
