Free Monk Fish at Kilmore Quay

From Morning Ireland, but no link yet, a fisherman has 130 or so boxes of monk fish that he has caught over his fishing limit. He is refusing to throw them back and has said he will leave them on the pier at Kilmore Quay, Wexford, today.

Monk Fish is ugly but man is it tasty.
Someone might get a few, too far for me.

A frightful enough thing to look at but arguably one of the nicest fish to eat.

Used to be discarded by fishermen. Poor man's lobster they called it.

Now its very expensive and in demand. Stocks are depleted and its hard to catch.
Plan to buy some today in Dublin and expect to pay big money. Wish I was in Kilmore Quay.

Following this story and it's mental. The guy could be arrested from bringing it ashore, is expected to dump it at sea but is bringing it in so people - and presumably TV cameras - can see what he's forced to throw away and the waste of it all.

Its a disgrace that they are forced to throw it back into the sea, after they have already died. They should be allowed bring it ashore but HAVE to provide it free. That way, fishing quotas wont be abused (as they dont make money of it) AND the food is not being wasted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,240 ✭✭✭bullpost

Agreed - surely they can come up with a system where it goes to charities who provide meals so there is no monetary gain from it.

Unfortunately Capitalism would dictate that people would start to offer a few euro for the free fish and then it it'd rise from there.

by dumping it he can not profit from it, if he was allowed to sell unintentional/accidential catches then you'll find that there is a lot more accidential catches of protected and high profit fish.

Where are stocks depleted and hard to catch?
If they are so hard to catch and depleted then why is he landing 130 boxes?
Monk catch rates have been steady for the last 5 yrs + the big spanish gillnetters that fished huge lengths of net have gone.
The problem here is that quotas for Ireland are tiny and the fishermen are struggling to make it work for them.

Yer man from River Cottage, Hugh Fearnley, did a show about this a while back.

It was absolutely shocking, the amount of dead fish that fishermen had to throw back into the sea due to EU regulations/laws.

Basically the fishermen can't control their catch. If they meet their cod quota and decide to fish for haddock, they can't guarantee that their nets won't be full of cod. Any caught cod must be thrown back in the sea... and the fish are usually dead by the time they are aboard the boats.

A real eye opener to say the least.

Just on the one o'clock news. They had all the boxes of fish laid out on the pier for people to help themselves to.

Fair play to this man for what he did.

Giving his stock to the people for free.

He feeds people FOR FREE with some of the nicest, freshest fish they will get,he also highlights the silly political crap that the EU are causing.

I wonder would you see that many gardai out side the house of any corrupt bankers or outside Sean Quinns house to arrest him????

I hope lots more trawlermen and boats adopt this tactic of bringing their catch home and letting people take it for free.

Theres also lots of homeless shelters and food parcel/food kitchens that could benifit from this free stock of fish.

Theres lots of people struggling nowadays to put food on their families tables,so this would be a great idea.

All we need now is a few bakeries to give out some free loafs of bread too.

Fishermen aren't stupid Paddy, they start giving it for free and people know to wait for it and the price will drop through the floor hence more fishermen get out of the business and more foreign frozen muck is sold here.

110 boxes given away, vessel seized and owner awaiting to hear if he is being arrested. The SFPA don't have a clue what to do with him apparently because he gave it all away instead of dumping it at sea!

No, he dumped it on land, in boxes. Fair play to him.

Yes, that's what I meant, he put 110 boxes on the quayside for people to take away. The SFPA didn't do anything.

Why dont they just use 2 boats when heading out? twice the quota?

Are you aware of the overheads involved in a trawlerman puting 1 boat and its crew out to see on a fishing trip???

You are also aware that its not like the trawler man can somehow see that his nets (below the sea) have the exact amount of that specific fish in it either.

So therefore he doesnt know until the nets are aboard and the holding tanks/fish crates and weights are totaled up.

yeah so when he realizes he's gone over weight just throw em into the other boat.

    Its Illegal to tranship fish.
That is move it from one boat to another.
This is not really a bargain alert its a political statement about how bad things are in some sections of the fishing industry at present.

Perhaps we should find a different way of fishing. Instead of standing there saying "I've needlessly killed all this fish, and now I'm gonna have to throw it away, poor me"

If we let people catch and land as much as they want there would be barely any left!
They have quotas for a reason.

Yes I do have a clue. I just don't have the same opinion on it as most people.

Every one is concerned that we are wasting fish. Well it's only wasted because we can't control what fish we catch. If we could then we wouldn't have a problem with catching the wrong fish and having to throw it away.

I agree it's a waste. But I don't think the answer is to just allow it all to be landed.

This is what the skipper should have done, couldn't be done for dumping, couldn't be done for landing the fish, fully legal, maybe a few swimmers required to bring it ashore :D

You could allways get your diving gear on and go down and check the nets and count the fish using a clicker and then tell the trawlerman exactly how many monkfish he has in his net.

The EU states that his overcatch must be dumped back in the SEA,so its a complete waste of fish and a food source.

The trawlerman was unhappy with dumping perfectly good fish stock (because of the EU rules not allowing him to land it),so he chose to land it and give it to people for free,to be eaten, instead of dumping it back in the sea half dead.

    Thats the point right there.

According to RTE News,a file is being prepared and sent to the DPP to prosecute the trawlerman. This man was giving to the people for free, and not taking away from them.

Yet all the bankers, big property tax evaders and vat cheats get away with their carry on.

WE really do live in a fcuked up country indeed.

The policy of the EU sucks and has to change. This is happening on every small fishing boat and trawler in the whole of the EU, perfectly good food being dumped. Disgusting.

The vessel was seized at least for a time today, mate of mine down there told me there was four Gardai present.

We can control what we catch, its called selectivity.
It works for some species but not all.
Monkfish are caught in two ways, Trawl and Gillnet.
Trawling for monkfish is pretty selective bigger mesh nets are used to allow other species to escape and retain just monk and megrim.
The other way is to use gillnet/tanglenets which the Spanish fleet used to use a lot of and still do to some extent.
There is no other way to catch those fish.
Quota is a very unwieldy tool, for those countries that knew what was going on and vastly inflated their catches like France they have limitless quotas, Ireland on the other hand has been very badly done by having a tiny fleet and almost no landings during accession.
French boats can't catch their quota even if they tried, its not physically possible
