Another Registration Question

I haven't been able to register yet. ID collection is tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has been in this situation?

Debating whether or not to just go along tomorrow and see how far I get? Anything not to have to pay late registration fees!

    Thanks in advance :)

I can't register either, nor can anyone I know who sat supplemental exams. Did you have supplemental exams too?

I got this incredibly obnoxious email from Student Records a few days back:
The Student & Graduate Records Office are currently processing Supplemental Examinations results, and subject to you successfully passing these examinations you will be invited to register for the academic year 2012/2013 in due course.

Should you miss the allocated slot for ID collection we will be able to accommodate you at a later time.

("Subject to my passing", as if I hadn't passed and got my results breakdown from my department almost a month ago.)

I already had a hard time convincing the gym to let me in on my student card, and there's still registration going on this week...I imagine it's going to be a complete pain in the hole if I'm still unable to register by Friday.

Dunno anyone who's tried just showing up and seeing what happens if they try collect ID, but I can't imagine them having much luck if they haven't gone through the system.

Basically, the entire thing's an absolute joke and an embarrassment, and anyone in college administration who had anything to do with the system should be ashamed of themselves for failing so hard.

Gonna be so pissed off if this interferes with my ability to get into the library next week...I need to be in there to do assignments

Same here (I got that email too). I deferred an exam and passed it in the supplementals. I tried turning up on Monday week last with proof of payment. No luck there - the lady there told me it would appear on the mytcd screen when I was able to register. I know of at least one other in a similar situation.

These people are morons who could do with a little publicity. Otherwise, they'll scuttle back into the dark and not do their jobs again next year. By then I'll be safely graduated and gone from this kip.

According to the staff in Luce Hall tonight the emails will go out tomorrow or "early next week". According to them, registration in Luce will remain open next week to take account of the supplemental problem. Needless to say, I still couldn't register or get my new card.

A ****ing joke. And I don't curse often.

You won't be charged twice. Same thing happened with me. I paid in instalments a month ago - so at the finance section I ticked the yes box for the 'did you pay in instalments' and just continued clicking next. It recognised I paid for this semester and my total came up to €0. So I wasn't charged at all, just had to go through that section again and just so the registration section can recognise it's been completed.

If your payment went through, then you won't be charged again.

I had already paid and then was offered the lovely choice of paying €0 in installments. "€0 by 1/09/2012" and "€0 by 31/1/2013". Thanks, College, you're so helpful :pac:

Got the registration done Friday night too, to be fair, wasn't even that late on their part. So Luce is definitely going to be open again next week for ID card collection?

I checked with them on thursday, they will be open to handle any ID card issues until the 12th.

Still no email but I'm an evening student so probably Monday or Tuesday for me. I reckon we're due a deduction in fees for this - they had four months to put a very simple system together and failed absolutely. If TCD is actually anywhere near the top 100 universities on earth, I dread to see 101.

    Perfect cheers!:)
You'd wonder why they couldnt take the payment as registering. Afterall Im hardly going to pay if I'm not coming back!

    A deduction in fees? Hah.

I don't know why you consider it a "very simple system", by the looks of it they have completely overhauled their registration system. As well as that they seem to be doing timetables and scheduling as well as individual module registration through it,which were afaik previously done by loads of different people throughout the college. Yeah they should have done better, but it's not the biggest scandal in the world that you have had to wait a few extra days to get a new student card. Last year, before this new system, many people got their card after the previous one had technically expired. The only inconvenience from that was you had to talk a few seconds to the security in the library before you were allowed in.

Anyway, I'm an undergrad and still no email for me.

Weird there was no mention of this at all in the weekly SU email, I thought this was exactly the sort of information they'd want to disseminate to their members, considering a huge number of people are still impacted by it.

Finally got my registration email. Slowest handclap in history for TCD efficiency.

Still no email, absolutely raging at this point, left a suitably ragey post on SU page. This is bull****.

I'm still not registered, it's week three now. I'm really disappointed in Trinity :(

No Email. No Registration. No Card.

On a plus note I was talking to library security today and they said last year's cards are now valid till Oct 31st to accommodate all these problems!

Just out of curiosity, is there some major inconvenience that people are suffering due to the fact that their card is still orange instead of blue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 TiredStudent

I'm not registered, thus my grant was not paid this week. That is a major inconvenience :(

Mark- you obviously love the new system. Perhaps you don't use Trinity after 9-7.30. That would be understandable. The blue card doesn't even open doors - not even for security staff as proven in front of my eyes tonight. The TCD system is crap....you appear to be the only one who thinks we're entering a brave new world.
Funny thing is I actually like TCD but this is beyond a joke.

My advice to anybody who still has been denied registration - hold onto that orange card. They still seem to work.

My proof: three stress free years of registering and then this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Lawliet

Seriously wish I'd paid a few euro extra and kept my orange card, not being able to open doors is getting pretty annoying. I don't even know who to start complaining to about it

Things like the Library and the gym - I know they're being accomodating, but it's still a bit of hassle when your card is out of date. I imagine it's causing the security guards a fair bit of trouble too - how can they work out who's entitled to be in certain places? Someone with an orange card could be a current student who can't register yet, or could be a graduate or someone who dropped out last year who's technically no longer allowed in the library/gym/on campus late at night. Plus you can't get student discounts or student tickets anywhere with it (eg. in shops or theatres or for private transport companies that don't use Travelcards), because the expiry date printed on it has passed.

Also some people who can't register can't collect grants, can't apply for various loans, can't apply for various bursaries or bank accounts should they wish to.

Err I do use Trinity outside of 9-7.30....

I was simply wondering why people are making a big deal about getting a shiny new card a week or so later than planned.

Grant payment is a fair reason.

But now you're arguing that it's actually worse to be registered as soon as possible...

Anyway, I would have thought that anyone who was in TCD last year would be aware that there has always been problems with the swipe system. And last year most returning undergrads registered a couple of weeks after the previous card had technically expired.

As I said already the system clearly could have been implemented better, but there's no point pretending that the registration system and other parts of TCD administration were perfect until this year.

I've been in Trinity for the past two years, and while I might have gotten the odd door that wouldn't let me swipe in, I've never had every door I tired refuse to open over a two week period. And it's not like I've just been given a faulty card, plenty of people are having problems.

Out of interest, people who haven't registered yet, did you sit Supps? They told me the problem was that the Supplemental results weren't in the Student Records office yet, but now one of the people from my class who also did Supps has been able to register, and still not me. Since they obviously arent going by class, I'm wondering if it's alphabetical, since that person got the email last friday (surname starts with A), and I know a first year who also sat Supps and got the email late monday night (surname starts with H), but nothing for me yet (surname starts with T). Does that seem plausible?

Sat supps. Received email on Monday afternoon. Surname starts with G.

Ugh, seems like it is alphabetical so, what a moronic way of doing things. Guess I'll just have to wait until the end of this week to register, and continue living off bread and water and avoiding paying my rent until my scholarship comes through. Bastards.

I've officially been accepted to a Ph.D programme by the school/department and have a post-graduate award to cover my fees....but haven't been able to register yet. So although my time-frame starts as of Sept 2012, I'll be lucky to start using resources and study by mid-end Oct 2012.

Have you rung the acadic registry people directly? After trying and trying I managed to get through the other day and when I explained I had no access to the library but had deadlines with my supervisor they pushed it through and I could register online 10 minutes later. Might be an idea.

Yup, I know the feeling, still no sign of an email yet for me, no registration yet. Insanely angry at college now for their lack of caring.

What letter does your surname begin with, out of interest? To help confirm/deny the alphabetical hypothesis...

Yup, still not registered, I've been ringing and emailing everyone, but no one can give me an answer as to why

Got on to my School earlier to see if they would send my results to the Student Records again, so waiting for a response from that.

Finally registered now. For anyone who isn't yet, I had to ring my department and get them to email my results to Student Records again, and tell me the date they originally sent the results, then ring the Academic Registry Helpline on 018964500 to get them to update my record. You have to be very insistent, they tend not to believe you, so don't let them brush you off. Good luck :)
