Usually the day of the toy show or night before. Going to be first year in my own place so I'll decide when to put it up. Will prob wait until the last week in November.

We put ours up around the 25th Nov.....love having it up for the Toy Show but couldnt face doing it that evening as its hectic enough getting dinners done and kids into their pjs to watch the show without the excitement (hassle) of putting a christmas tree up too! I just clean up, light fire, switch on tree lights and wer set :-)

I put mine up the same day as the lights are switched on, on the Christmas tree in O'Connell Street, Dublin. We make a day of it, bring the kids to see Santa, go for dinner, see the lights ceremony (which is fantastic!!!!) then go home and put the tree up. Can't wait!

We normally put up ours like two weeks before Christmas, but I still live at home right now. When I get my own place, God only knows how early it'll be up, probably straight after Halloween :P

put mine up around the weekend of the 8th december. That's time enough. By the time New Years Eve comes round I can't wait to take it down (usually new Years Day)

Nope no tree - might put up a few bits just to make the house look occupied over the 'festive season'. But really can't be doing with arriving back on 5th jan and having to 'undecorate' and then washing my bikinis and shorts! :D

Generally the last Saturday in November. :)
This year I'm getting a new tree, I might get a fancy one with built-in lights to save the annual detangling nightmare!

We go as a family to see the lights etc on Christmas Eve. While we are out the domestic staff put the tree in the hall and do the decorations. Always wonderful to return home to that!

I'm pretty sure they allow a small tree in your cell. There'll certainly be a communal one on the landing.

Ours always went up after the 6th of December (that's one of my sisters' birthdays, and the reason)

I think the December 24th-January 3rd brigade are in the wrong forum tbh. Did you guys mean to post in an Afterhours 'Bah Humbug' thread or something?

Mine us going up November 26th. Mother will be coming back from a 3 month visit to her Sister in Perth on the 27th and she asked if I could put up the decorations a few days early to take the sting out of coming home from 30 degree+ temperatures to 5 or 6. :D

That said, it's only about 4 or 5 days early for us as we are 1st December types. :D

Wow, that is early! I think I put mine up on the 27th November last year, which was really early for me. I was away the following weekend, so it was either that or the 10th which I felt was too late. To be honest, I was a bit sick of the sight of it come Christmas, I think it took the specialness out of it or something. This year, it’s either the 1st or the 8th. Not sure which I’ll go for, the 8th feels very late especially since I go up home the weekend before Christmas for the holidays, so that would leave it up only 2 weeks. I am definitely in the take it down asap camp. I think I took it down new years day last year! Would hate the thought of it still being up when I returned to work.

I suppose it is quite early hehe , But me and my mam LOVE Christmas so much , It dosen't get old for us having our tree up that early it just makes it more fun + We have loads of time to add more decorations and stuff so I love doing it early , I hope you have a merry Christmas this year :)

When I lived at home we'd always put up the tree on Christmas Eve morning and me and my siblings would decorate it while watching Christmas movies on TV. :o But last Christmas was sort of my first Christmas living in my own place so I put up the tree a week before Christmas. We always have a real tree so we can't put it up very early or it'll die before Christmas. :p

Next week, probably. Not sure how a real tree will survive for the 3 months until Little Christmas but shure we'll give it a try.

Didn't you have a picture of Homer with a Santa Hat as your avatar around the festive season last year?!:)

My wife's folks are real humbug cünts, (the only tree they have is one i got them, as the kids didnt understand how a house could not!), so i always make a point of putting ours up when they're up for the country shopping day. They go into town for the day, then stay in our gaff.

I fücking love going all out when they're there:), crimbo jumper, reindeer hairbands on the kids, bing crosby blasting out, two real trees.. One in the front room, and one in the back room. Enough fairy lights, that we dont have to turn on any other lights that time of year..

Its the little victories you have to savour ;)

Toy Show is on November 30th this year. Is that too early to put up the tree? It'll be the first artificial tree in my parents house!

    Apologies, I was being facetious.

We get real trees, so I usually prefer to put it up a week before Christmas but will try to buy it earlier and leave in the garage. Depends on the selection available.

I left getting my own tree too late last year and the selection was rubbish so I ended up not putting one up in my apartment (I wasn't spending Christmas there so it wasn't as miserable as it sounds).

I got a massive one for my parents house the year before last, probably the best tree they ever had.

8th of December every year, the tree gets put up and house decorated. I couldn't have it any earlier or later. Just been that date for as long as I remember. :)

Usually the Sunday two weeks before Christmas - so the 9th this year.

Ah yes, the age old nighmare of the lights. We wind them around cardboard rolls each year, it helps when putting them up, doesn't solve the blown/loose bulb hunt. My husband usually deals with the lights. I usually prepare him for it with a glass of whisky or brandy, just to take the edge off the stress:D

Always the 1st of Dec, then down on Jan 1st/2nd. But reading this thread I might put them up for the toy show, kids getting older now (8,5 &3) where they can stay up and watch it, would make it really festive for them. Think I will surprise them when they get home from school that day :):):)

The 1st of Never, yes bah humbug. I don't bother with a tree or decorations and haven't for the last 8 years. I'm normally away with family in the US for Christmas and don't bother anymore.

you mean surprise them by getting them to do the christmas tree I hope, and not have it all done yourself before they get home. :D okay they might be messy but you can fix it afterwards, but it's lovely watching them put the decorations up on the tree - I have fond and treasured memories of my own kids doing it and having to go over it again that night.

I'm so glad that we don't do Christmas like they do in America. They have all the atmosphere from Thanksgiving up until Christmas eve - they go over the top on everything. But Christmas eve is just a normal day to them - they work all day as usual. Christmas Day sees a lot of the shops open as usual, and the day after Christmas is straight back to work (ST. Stephens Day) and you will see the Christmas trees thrown out on the day after christmas. Also because they have turkey on Thanksgiving, they don't usually have it for Christmas - they have ham instead. Thank goodness we draw out Christmas for as long as we possibly can. :D:D

Normally the first sunday of December (but if that goes past the 5th ,last sunday of november !!) Never realised people liked to have it up for the toy show putting ideas in my head now!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭sassa

I always put the tree and decorations up the day the toy show is on. I get my mam to collect the kids from school and bring them to her house until about 4 or 5 and then put up the decorations and lights around the room and windows and put the tree up then they come home to nearly everything done and put the decorations on the tree. We get a takeaway sit down to eat it in the sitting room with the fire blazing then have hot choc and cookies when the toy show comes on. It's probably my favourite part of the run up to Christmas.
