hi, myself and my flatmate got the pro power barbell/dumbbell set from Argos a while back and want to buy more weights for the barbell. as this wasn't the most expensive set I was just wondering if there was a maximum that the barbell could take before it bent or even broke? Can't find any good information on Pro Power stuff. Thanks

I had a York normal barbell (Non Olympic from Argos) a good few years ago. it came with 50kg of weights but I had it loaded to around 80kg using car rims and it didn't break or anything. I did notice a slight bend in the bar after a few months but nothing I was worried about.

How much weight do you think you will put on it? I can't imagine 10 or even 20kg extra would do any harm. But do it at your own risk.

The bars are probably well able to withstand weights in excess of 120 kg no problem but I just wouldn't bother chancing it.

I am guessing the bar is hollow? I posted this before

I have a hollow york ezcurl bar and I think it said it is rated to 60kg. It began to bend past ~110kg, I think the max I had on it was 130-140kg and it did seem quite dodgy at that. I am not sure how hollow bars actually fail, e.g. if they actually snap or just bend to bits. I got a solid bar and just use the hollow for lighter stuff, never more than 100kg now.

You can get bars on amazon, delivery is free if your total is over £25, e.g. if a bar is £20 add on a £5 dvd for free delivery

Note that your weights have 1" holes and are called standard, bars & plates for 2" holes are olympic.

This is another reason to avoid the vinyl kits, they usually come with hollow bars.

Also only are the plates so bulky you cannot fit many onto a dumbbell or new barbell if you did get one.

The plates also degrade over time and have a lower resale value.

Thanks, looks like the OP on the other thread had the same kit as myself. Better off not trying to find out at what point it would snap and paying the few quid for a proper bar!
