Primary Teaching Panels

Could some of the more experienced teachers here please explain the panel in plain English?

I'm only in my first year out, day-to-day subbing, so not too worried about it, but struggling to get my head around requirements/payscales/supplementary panels etc.

What would the implications be if I were to get a substitute/temporary contract in a Church of Ireland/Educate Together school? Would it mean it would take me longer to get on a Catholic panel or does it just depend on where you work in the year before you apply for panel rights?
