Goodbye Hotmail 21st October

Had my Hotmail account 13years approx. All I ever wanted was a simplistic mail service not connected or linked with anything..odd I know as everyone seems to want to be 'connected' these days.

About 6 years ago I used messenger, had enough of that after a few months and managed to remove it from computer and Hotmail.

Recently I see that Microsoft has integrated the messenger and I think msn live so that when I sign into my Hotmail I am automatically signed in to these other services 'AND' when I click my hotmail contacts they are in the bloody messenger service now. It infuriates me. I think its all going to become 'outlook' or something. I don't want to be connected with any other services in any way whatsoever. They even use my real name now, God knows where they got that from, I never gave it to them.

It seems that on 21st October a new agreement is set to start and if you don't agree you lose access to the account. No doubt you have to be 'connected' to these other services. No thanks.

It looks like the end of the line for me and my personal Hotmail. I will not sign up to this. It will be like losing a limb but thats it for me. Am currently deleting all contacts and emails so hopefully they won't have all that info anymore after I'm blocked.

Anyone know of a simple email account with no bells or whistles and minimal personal sign up details. I'd be willing to pay $10-20 or so per year. .....................

as one man said to me, "you are the product, not the customer"!. I'd like to be the customer now....

eh? You want to pay for email?

Just open a gmail account using fake details, no one is forcing you to give them your name and address.

OP, that's one of the reasons why I'm renting a server (+ domain name).
No ads, full control, no unwanted "improvments".

"Own your own domain. Instead of having an email address @hotmail.com or @gmail.com - or even @yourisp.net - have one @yourowndomain.com. If you own "yourowndomain.com", then your email address is yours as long as you pay the annual registration fee.
For example, I own "pugetsoundsoftware.com", and I probably will until I'm no longer connected online. I control the email addresses that are available on that domain, and I choose whether to "do" the email service myself, or what email service I choose to use.
I could even run it all through Gmail for no additional charge.
Many domain registrars also provide email hosting services. For example, GoDaddy has several plans, and might be one of the first places I would recommend looking into should you want to go this route."

    ^^^
Exactly what I did ! I create an address for sites or services I use online - required usually to receive confirmation of registration. If the address starts getting SPAM then I just delete it !

This. I use a unique address for each site i sign up to and know who has caused the spam (i'm looking at you photobucket)

I know you've probaly already made your mind up OP, but there's a fairly simple way to block it - details here.

I'd much prefer the option to just turn it off, but there you go.

IMHO the outlook.com UI is much cleaner than the old cluthered hotmail/live UI.

In other words, you don't understand what's happening, and that's made you scared (and, for some reason, mad)

    It infuriates me.

MS is only doing now what Google has been doing all along. So I doubt, gmail will be a less infuriating alternative. :D

You could use a desktop email client like Thunderbird and access your Hotmail via IMAP. That way you only get the email without the messenger type stuff.
