First of all we are not a bunch of young alcos or anything! But basically looking to rent a boat/barge for two days to go down the shannon. Some crazy prices online for some of them, anyone with better connections have a better idea of how to go about it and not get robbed,
    cheers

How many people are you hoping to bring, anything with more than 6 berths and the price will start to go up.

You might find something here http://www.iwai.ie/rentals/rentacruiser.html or http://www.iwai.ie/rentals/rentabarge.html

Or if you want to do it in style how about this :Dhttp://www.luxuryyachtingireland.com/

Give Ray Molloy a ring...he has a 40ft Broom that he hires out, he owns it himself so may be in a position to do a deal with you where the hire companies may not....
The boat would be the same as this....but in beige :o

You might very well do much better hiring from privave owners but it's worth pointing out that the hire companies (Emerald Star, Carrick Craft. etc) offer cheap rates for the off-season around now. At least that was the case in my Shannon days.

I'm not positive, but I would imagine that standard boat insurance would not cover the boat for use as a hire boat!
However Ray Molloy that I mentioned earlier was involved with Derg Line Cruisers and knows the industry so I'm sure the boat he hires out would have the appropriate insurance!!
Insurance is not mandatory for boats on the Shannon, but if you have an accident and run into someone's precious new Broom 40 you'll be damn glad you have it!!

Alan 1990 is correct. Accidents are expensive, even running aground could leave you with a bill for thousands. The only solution is to ask. With the commercial hire companies you know you're covered. With a private hirer I would imagine you will be covered if he is a regular hirer. But the only way to find out is to ask, especially what happens if you damage his boat.

And don't tell the owner/hire company that it's for a stag party! That's a bit like trying to hire your local rugby club for an 18th birthday party.
