13k each way, carpenterstown to city center, 5 days a week. Changing jobs, so that will bring this to about 17k one way.

23-25km in, 23-40+km home, depending on route

Over the winter I will do it every day I don't need the car, regarless of weather unless there is ice about - works out at 3 or 4 days a week. Over the summer I have other commitments, and tend to do a bit less commuting on the bike (but make up for it with other types of cycling)

Average speed works out at around 30kph, which equates to 46 minutes on my shortest route (fastest I've done it is 36m 18s)

I use my spare racing bike (Focus Cayo)

I do Clonsilla 16km each way, but I don't have any lights or rain gear and mudguards so I won't be back on the bike for the next week or 3 until I get sorted.

Due to having kids and wife who all needs looking after in the morning I cycle 15 km into Swords, put bike on back of car (which wife has driven into Swords), wife gets fast bus to town, I drop one kid to school and other to grandparents.

Would love to cycle all the way to work and back , but ....... if only...... blah blah blah......pesky kids........pesky wife..... blah blah blah

Mine is a 90km round trip so 45km each way.

Option 1: cycle in and cycle home.
Option 2: drive in and cycle home.
Option 3: drive 20km, park the car and cycle the rest of the way.
Option 4: give the bike a well deserved rest ;)

Shortest possible route is a 17.5k round trip. In the mornings I try to take in a loop up to Cruagh and a bit if time allows. That brings the daily round trip up to 44-45km or there abouts. Cycle Monday to Friday to work since the buss would take more time even if the Cruagh climb is considered.

Just short of 30km each way from Greystones to city centre. Takes an hour which is pretty much the same as the dart when you factor in the walk from the station!

My commute is 26km each way, Try to do it 5 days a week as long as its not lashing rain ( bit of a fair weather cyclist):D and have a spare road bike (carbon bike resting for the next few months) I now use for getting in and out. Sold the car and hate public transport so no other option really:)

    50 mins each way.

Do you cycle in and go home then cycle in again?

Shortest route is 8.5Km each way. I work 7 on, 7 off shifts, doing days one week, nights the next and have been riding in and out 90% of the time for the past 6 months.
Yet to ride through winter, but as it's in Zurich, it's gonna be cold!
    Road bike for me.

Now only 2.5km each way but I get home for lunch most days so 10km/day. This time last year I was doing 41km each way 3 or 4 days a week but changed jobs - I do miss the commute though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭t'bear

15km each way for me, or 19km by the slightly longer route home. Only hitting it 3 times a week and its not the weather thats stopping me from taking my two wheeled transport. Someone above mentioned 'pesky kids' above, well I have two who somehow need to be educated and minded, so much assist with said drop off's etc.

26km each way, but sometimes I get "lost" on my way back home, so it is usually 60km return trip on average. My morning ride usually takes no more than 55 minutes one way.

I cycle every working day all year round, started cycling to work on 21st October 2011.

    Edit... Forgot this bit:

25k each way, hoping to stretch it out the whole way (40k) over the winter, at the moment about 50 minutes, Felt X-City hybrid.

What type of saddle bag is that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 468 ✭✭VanhireBoys

I only do a poxy 7 miles each way but thats at 5am and 5-7pm respectively. There is no point in taking the car to be stuck in Galway traffic ! Rain or shine I bike it no matter !

Last morning 5am tail wind big gear and I done it in 17mins , well it would be bad manners to waste a good tail wind .. Its usually about the 22-24min steady

I ride a 1988 Peugeot 501 in blue/white which I really find comfy and easy to handle ! In fact I go evrywhere on it. I would love a touring bike but, as my brother in law has one and its really good for commuting

    8 km's there @ 30 minutes and 12 km's home @ 35 minutes.

5 days and sometimes 6 and I never take the car:) even on the coldest wettest day and I can drop to -17.

We get 20 cents a km tax free which pays all cycle bills:).

Ice and snow are not a problem as I'm a trikeman:).

Here's one of my trusty steeds:).

about 105 km round trip, (although sometimes i add a bit more - 125km round trip last week) but i dont do it all the time. i have showers and stuff in work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 Maciej_D

I've 11km each way, on average 3 days a week. Pushing for 4 to 5 by the end of October. I also do longer distances at the weekends 40-50km. Only started cycling in August so there's plenty room for improvement.

About 7k each way - usually do 4 days a week, and bring in a batch of clean clothes on the other day. I try to extend the journey by getting up around Three Rock some mornings, but I haven't been doing too well on that recently.

9.5km each way with a few extended homeward commutes per week over the summer. An extended commute varies between 20 and 70km depending on the mood and available time, but usually averages out at 30km.

For the short commutes it's a Charge Plug singlespeed. If a longer commute is planned then it's the road bike.

I do 20 miles to and from work(40miles), twice to three times a week.

Great to get a bit of training done as well as getting home.:D

12.5km each way, seven days a week, sometimes twice a day depending on my shifts and my training, alu road bike for me :)

21km each way. Try for 5 days unless I'm away for work or dangerous conditions (Ice, high wind, manflu). Have managed to average 4 excluding holidays.

Just fitted lights to the winter bike - God it's slow compared to the road bike. 55-60 mins instead of 43-47. I'm hoping that a bit of lubrication and adjusting the back brake might improve those times.

My commuter bike adds 10 minutes onto my trip each way too, but I try to look at it as a positive i.e. 20 minutes extra cycling each day.
I have however ordered 28mm tyres to replace the current 37mm power sappers.

Only 7km each way (Booterstown - Tara St.) and it's not enough! Just about breaking a sweat on arrival.

Find some hills - take a route via Sandyford/Dundrum and you'll be more than breaking sweat.

New commute: Less than I thought, but still decent at 12kms on the way in, 14kms on the way back. I'm taking a less busy route on the way back. I'm still happy with that distance on a daily basis.

14k in 15k home. Blanch to City Centre. No more than 25 minutes in and about 30 home. Have been doing it 5 days a week recently and upping the home journey by doing a loop of the park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,078 ✭✭✭fenris

Old commute was approx 25km each way from Bray to City Centre once or twice a week.

Moving to Greystones in a couple of weeks so that will go up to approx 30km each way once or twice a week.

Currently living in Laragh until the house move is complete and the thought of that blood hill up out of Kilmac to Callary on the way home has pretty much sapped my commuting enthusiasm for the moment!
Although if I suss out somewhere to abandon my car in Killmacanogue and find my currently MIA (packing, moving, boxes everywhere) left cycling shoe then a half arsed commute is on the cards!

18km each way from Saggart to Glasnevin and back 3 days a week and 60km twice a week from Saggart to Galsnevin to Baldoyle and back to Saggart....usually takes me 34 minutes in to work and 48 on the way home due to hills and common westerly winds.....best part of my day

Here's my ride ...Surly long haul trucker :D

Nice I commute on a Surly Troll, I left the rigid fork in in Ausria before I moved here, but I think I'll bring it over when I go there on holiday and equip the bike with proper musguards and a lowrider

My commute is just a bit over 5km, but it@s quite an uphill in the morning and a nice fast ride home

Maybe I'll build a mountainbike with the magura fork that's in the Surly at the moment.

I've a pretty paltry 2-3km each way. It's mostly downhill in the morning, and I get to take on either Bridge St. Bridgefoot St. on the way home. If I'm up to it, I'll take a longer route through the back streets of the Liberties for some fun, though with the dark evenings setting in it'll be happening less and less.
