Unfortunately Jimmy they are exactly the type of weanlings that are trading poorly at the moment. Around here you wouldn't get more than €700 a head for them.

He is around a year I would think and hasnt seen a great time so weighed poorly IMV, would imagine he was a suckler. He seemed to appreciate my good silage last night anyway. Vaccinated and wormed today and got off out to meet his new buddies.

He will probably graze till 1st of dec then go on beet tops with a little hay till 15th of feb (substance living) and back to grass then and hopefully on good quality grass by 1st of April, buffer feed on grass from may onwards and kill 1st August, hopefully all things going right.

What kind of weight and money would you be hoping for by 1Aug 2013 bob with that lad?

probably average kilo a day liveweight over how long I have him, but he will be in survival mode for 3 - 4 months (last month at grass/2 months on beet tops hay/first month at grass of 13). so around 640kg live weight and 360kgs dead if killed around the 1st of August 13. As you well know there is allot to go wrong between now and then. Take interest on money alone if he makes it that far there will be €50 interest to be cleared of his head:confused:, Im not going to do the exact figures as they are depressing and probably wont leave a whole lot of money and this is for a reasonable priced animal.

lots of average to poor quality FR weanling bulls there all around 280kgs, best of them made 440, some poorer ones around 200kgs just made over the 300 euro mark.

average quality CH bulls making 300 with the weight up to 500 with the weight for export quality, not that there was many of them there

weanlings are bouncing around in price everyday depending on the marts for some reason. There are no clear prices

True but the marts renowned for shipping are fairly consistent around here.

piccy didnt come out, terrific price...its really a whole waste of time to be selling these weanling at e700 - 800 ...costs e750 to keep yer cow for the year, so any chance of a penny profit is gone with the calf..so why not hang onto the calves at least til next spring (assuming space /time etc)?..or go the whole hog and finish the animal, atcurrent prices theres a quid in it..

Any idea what Holstein bull weanlings are worth at the moment? They're roughly 240kg. What would be a realistic asking price selling off the field?

Probably for another debate but total outgoings last year divided by no. of cows here in a suckler system selling weanlings left us on €480 per cow. €750 sounds serious high.

have you included your fixed costs (sheds, tractors etc.) and depreciation in this €480 per cow cost???

i would say its not the difference in marts just the differences in days and moods of farmers. its a very strange trade this year

    They are charlaoisx averaging 340kgs.

Usually wouldn't buy as strong but too many customers for the 850-900 bracket. Finding better value up the weights but trying not too buy age either.

seems credit facilities in marts is restricting a couple of the main players for weanlings, this is what I am being told from the guys who are at the business. No longer are way out, post dated cheques being accepted and rightly so, no harm in making buying a level playing field and making sure the marts are on sound financial footings

You really can't compare prices from mart reports without seeing the quality of the animals. Ennis weanlings are generally good suckler types. Grass is scarce too so animals may not have much condition on them, making them seem dear on a price per Kg basis.
Places like Kilmallock might seem good value, but the land around there is very good quality and a lot of dairy dreeding in the area.
