question about visiting websites, IP and privacy

Hello, when visiting websites, I understand you can cloak or change your IP address via some masking service, but can + how does a website still detect you are a repeat visitor? is this done by the website having some security software in it so it can detect your computers ID or something ? how is this preventable? thanks

Not that many sites would rely on IP addresses to identify repeat visitors, it's far too unreliable. The most common method would be to use cookies which are "a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while a user is browsing a website".

You can disable cookies by using using Incognito mode in Google Chrome, or Private Browsing Mode in Firefox
