€216m spent to date including compensation to disappointed bidders. The amount was roughly known already but the C&AG provides some breakdown.

Motorways = Pork for supporters.
Railways: Little/no pork for supporters.

That was the equation and it is still being justified today.

which is why the railway network (i.e. like UK Network Rail not the operating side) should be handed over to NRA and any road scheme within an asses roar of a railway line subjected to mandatory alternatives analysis.
