    How original.

It's basically a reboot of Naked Camera by the talentless creeps behind the Republic of Telly. The useless Jennifer Maguire will be doing a "rude" cover act of Meave Higgin's security guard character.

The bit at the start chasing after people was terrible.

The bit with the guy delivering the pallets and the prostitute was pretty obviously staged. Is it all meant to be hidden camera or are some scenes scripted? Poor stuff so far, I'm out.

Fcuking dreadful. Is this the best RTE can come up with? Hidden camera show? Zig and zag home video bloopers?

Is it 1989 or something? Just fcuk off RTE you tits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭Banjaxed82

I assumed given the title "The Fear", that it would be some kind of Scare Tactics (or the like) hidden camera show. In this day and age you need have a different angle on the well worn hidden camera show, but this just followed the basic formula. If you're using that basic formula you need top notch comedy scenarios to back it up. There's a couple of giggles in here, but most of it fell flat really.

    Complete crap. Cheap, unimaginative, unfunny.

I was just going to say that. The bit that followed it set in Fota Wildlife park looked very staged as well.

Aw, wanted this to be good - It was very poor in all fairness, with that low, low standard anyone with a camera and a spare 2-3 hours could have a hidden camera show on RTE...... Would they not edit out the lame, unfunny, missed target, cringey bits and keep on writing or shooting until they got something funny together????????

    - Seemed like everything they shot no matter how crap was good enough for inclusion - CUT!

The only terribly flat part was the zoo bit. I thought the rest was very good for an Irish comedy show.

Are you kidding me. It was all flat apart from the naked guy and that joke has a very short shelf . The opening scene when Jennifer Maguire was running around harassing people and basically trying to piss people off was cringeworthy .

The prostitute who was looking for her girls delivered in a box was just tasteless . The scene where your man was acting like a complete retard was just stupid .

The scene with Maguire playing the part of the zookeeper was bizarre to say the least. The scene with the american tourist was at best mildly amusing .

You know, I watched this not expecting much, as I knew that it featured the same crew who brought us the Republic of Telly, and in fairness it was better than The Republic of Telly as that Republic of Telly was muck of the highest order , but this wasn't much better.

You know, I dont know why I am surprised as you get nothin but mediocrity and ****e served up in this **** country.

Anyone know what happened to PJ Gallaghers new hidden camera show? He was recording it earlier this year. Did "The Fear" replace it, RTE would hardly have 2 hidden camera shows would they?

Damn, and here I was hoping the last tv show he did the awful "Meet The Neighbours" would put and end to his career with RTE.

It actually hurt to watch this show.

I would absolutely love to know the process behind a show like this making it's way to our tvs.

I am an open minded person, who loves comedy, but I just found this show offensive.

Is it actually supposed to be a comedy? Maybe it's supposed to be a cringey?

For the record I watched less than 5 minutes.

I know comedy is subjective, but I can appreciate comedic value is things I don't find funny - in this show all I saw was lack of imagination, comedic value, originiality, timing, knowing when to quit, knowing how to edit dead air.....sure the list goes on.

On the other hand, if these people got paid for putting this show together then I applaud them, they committed daylight robbery and got away with it :D

Candid camera shows were funny in the 80s,if your going to do one now I think they will have to be a lot more original.Theres nothing to compel me to watch The Fear again.

I can answer both those questions at once, guys... ;)

The folks at Montrose automatically think that everyone in Ireland loves this sort of comedy - which also includes Naked Camera, Anonymous, Republic of Telly and the recent Baptism of Hire pilot.

And, in turn, they automatically think that these shows will generate a lot of the one thing that we all know they're struggling for at the mo...

    image-268383-galleryV9-hgxh.jpg

So, without bothering to do proper research into the respective qualities of these shows and the true chances of them generating lots of money, they won't hesitate to commission them.

And don't be too surprised if they keep commissioning them well past their sell-by date, too. That's certainly the case with Anonymous, which has been going for a mind-boggling seven years now...

     ;););)

Actually, I'd say the number one reason RTE produced this was because it was CHEAP. Besides wages for cast/crew, you'd knock out an episode for next to nothing.

I'd say low production costs (really low) would be one of the top 3 reasons why RTE would produce a lot of their shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭dolittle

i thought the show was fairly poor
the plumbers reaction to the naked guy was funny but after that the sketch was done
very poorly written, expletives does not equal funny

I don't disagree at all that this show is as cheap as chips. ;)

But the fact that RTE are relentlessly churning out comedies of this sort - with little or no regard for what viewers really think of them or for how much profit really will be generated, and with no real desire to try something completely different - suggests that their minds are seriously warped...

Probably among the top 5 worst shows I have watched on rte...and that list is tough to get in to due to so many bad shows over the years.
Horrible stuff, got 1 laugh outta the entire episode.

Poor show, after all the ads they showed I thought it might be good, but it was brutal, best part was the sketch with the plumber.

What was that terrible RTE comedy series a few years back where it's creator came on here defending it from all the derision it was getting on here. Was it the English class or the Roaring 20's?I'd like to see the people behind this come on and try to justify why it should be recommisioned.

Wow, this was a pathetic attempt at a Naked Camera show...only without being funny, and being bad actors/actresses. Horrible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭captainkeg

Very poor and as someone as already said it has the same undercurrent of nastiness as Republic of telly.Jennifer Maguire is just ignorant, I know these shows are targeted at students but still, very poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 PubSpy

The problems with these shows are numerous:

    1) No budget

    2) The people involved are detached from reality - they see themselves as creative, edgy and funny

    3) Someone in RTE signs off on this muck

Don't know how they're not embarrassed churning this rubbish out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭Builderfromhell

Had enjoyed some of 'Republic of Telly' so I was looking forward to this.
I endured it up until the 'joke' about the 14y.o. being late losing her virginity. The crudeness of the programme was bad enough but I saw nothing to even make me smirk not to mind laugh.

I can't believe Ireland doesn't have creative film makers and comedians who could put a much better programme together with a similar tiny budget.

Mike Finn in Limerick is a very talented comedy writer. There must be loads of others.

Even if they're were, how would RTE know about them?

They have no interest in developing writers, just ripping off UK formats and stuffing them with their in-house hacks like Jennifer Maguire, who considers himself a comedian when she's nothing more than a reality show bully.

Also, watched the show there, it's scum.

Well, I'd say that such film makers and comedians do exist... it's just that RTE are so obsessed with producing crap and trying to eliminate their money woes that they're just completely ignoring or overlooking these people.  :(

Why they even screen it is beyond me.

Could it go the same way as The Cassidys? Be shown for a few weeks and then cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,056 ✭✭✭applehunter

Some were funny but too many misses made it past the cutting room.

Its a bit to crass as well. Not a fan of Jennifer Maguire's style either.

    shockingly poor stuff.

Am a fan of hidden camera shows but it's pretty shocking to see how poor this is compared to Mike Murphy's candid camera from the 1980s.

The Kerry saying "England" over and over was the only thing I found anywhere near amusing.
