    The pliable plastic earplugs commonly worn by motorcyclists. The tapered type; don't be tempted by the cylindrical, foam type usually packaged in a cardboard sleeve.

    Might take a bit of getting used to but very effective. Oh, and slippers for your house mates.

    E-A-R curiously enough. But there are other brands.
    For example these
    (But not this type )

    Most motorcycle shops will have them, or maybe Halfords. Hardware or builders' providers may have similar ear plugs but I don't think they'll be as comfortable.
