DANIELLE HARRIS will be attending this years event (October 25th-29th)

    Oh dear.
    This causes me some concerns.
She's lovely, etc, but we were all introduced to her when she was like 10. :(

Hopefully Rob Zombie's "The Lords of Salem" will be making an appearance.

Love Nightbreed absolute brilliant horror/fantasy film.

Citadel is a pretty intense slice of horror - some very tense and uncomfortable setpieces. I wasn't completely won over by it, but it was very positively received at the midnight screening at the Film Fleadh.

Will probably check out V/H/S, although I imagine that's en route to a more general release sooner rather than later.

    Ha, Young Frankenstein. Nice.

At first glance there is absolutely nothing I would be upset to miss.

I'll pour over the programme a bit more this evening.

Some great films in there but I've seen a good three quarters of them already and only really interested in Nightbreed Cabal cut and Excision. I have the Excusion Blu-Ray on order and it's out a week after the festival and I think it may be one if those perverse films best suited to home viewing. As for Nightbreed, it's an old favourite and reviews for the new cut are good so I may make the trip.

    Some great films in there

This being the internet I must stress that I'm not being sarky here... which ones are you referring to?
    I won't ask how you've seen them.

Citadel interests me the most, but I'd say it is a dead cert for a 'proper' cinema release so I'm not in a huge hurry to see it.

Midnight Son, V/H/S, Citadel, Antiviral, Room 236, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Deep Red, Rites of Spring, Eurocrime, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, American Mary, The Monster Squad, Shiver (depending on which one it is), Nightmare Factory, Sleep Tight and Nightbreed are all worth a watch. Excision is the big one for me, it looks absolutely bonkers and perverse as hell. The trailer is one of the more interesting ice seem in a long time.

As for how I saw them, well most of the films can be seen legally. Some are on Netflix, others are on DVD and the rest have screened at various festivals over the past year. I saw screeners for some of the others such as Rites of Spring which has since been leaked which is a Shane considering that it's not the final cut that was leaked.

I'd say half have either already been released on DVD and/or shown at festivals.

I'm not really interested in re-watching the older ones but Sleep Tight kinda caught my eye. I'll read up a bit on Excision.

I rewatched The Monster Squad recently. Sad to say, it has not aged well!

I rewatch it all the time and never tire of it. I've shown it to my younger brothers and they've all liked it. Sure there's a certain nostalgic value to my love of the film but it stands up as an intelligent, well made film that has a great script and some memorable moments.

Great special effects (particularly the moment when Dracula's metamorphosis from man to bat is stalled mid-transformation), but I found the dialogue grated, and the child actors were uncharismatic and unsympathetic. :(

A lot of people at Frightfest, Kim Newman and others, had American Mary down as the best film of the festival. Looking forward to seeing it in Dublin.

The Tall Man an unwelcome possibility? I'd feel sorry for the audience subjected to that cack, but it is a big name horror yet to receive an official Irish release.

    Definite's for me:

    Room 237
    Citadel
    VHS
    American Mary
    Excision

And a good few on the 'maybe' list.

Want to go see a couple of films at this but don't recognise much of the lineup (apart from the old ones - none of which are a major draw for me). Can someone recommend one or two highlights?

I'd recommend checking out Excision, Antiviral, Rites of Spring, American Mary, Citadel and V/H/S.

8 out of 10 films I plan to see booked now. :)

I reckon even the potentially bad films will be enjoyable due to the good buzz that does be there that weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Picked up tix for Saturday. There's actually a good few other films i'm interested in but they're all spread out unfortunately. Don't wanna be hanging about for a while between films.... Thought the Excision trailer was horrendous, I could barely make it through the trailer I had so little interest in it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

Would Zombie Flesh Eaters / Deep Red be a good double bill? Somehow, I've not seen either. Although looking at the time it's on, it must not finish until about 2:30am??

Picked up tickets for V/H/S, Excision and American Mary. Might go to a few more, but those are definites for now. The Horrorthon Surprise Movie is too risky :/

I'm not sure of the terms but they look like exploitation (?) 70s slasher/gore films. If they look like your kind of bag, go for it! I'd generally rather see films that aren't out yet, unless it's a film I love.

I really enjoyed Let Me In 2 years ago, the only experience I've had with the surprise film there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

Yeah but unfortunately I'm working when a lot of the newer ones that come highly recommended are playing ;(

Big fan of the Dead trilogy (of which Zombie Flesh Eaters is supposedly a semi-sequel) and also love Suspiria, so have gone for the double bill. Might leave early if bum gets sore.

    Triple bill today.

V/H/S I enjoyed. Uneven, as to be expected, but the first and two last sections particularly were a lot of fun.

American Mary was twisted fun. Think it ran out of steam towards the end (or maybe I was distracted because everyone near me kept going to the toilet - cursed beer in the cinema!) but for the most part demented entertainment with a wicked sense of humour. Katharine Isabelle was excellent as the antiheroine. A little creeped out by the Betty Bop lookalike. Also, was it just me, or was the sound mix very dodgy, especially for the dialogue?

Didn't think much of Among Friends, TBH. Started off very amateurish - the 5D and 7D footage just seemed far too cheap, as did the comedy. Livened up a bit around the halfway point, but just was underwhelming on the whole. Few decent ideas, solid cast, shoddy execution.

Cringey, awkward highlight of the day - "I have a question for the girl on the left... the Japanese lady"

The sound was all over the place. It was fine at times but if it was just characters talking with no background noise or music it was far too high. Really enjoyed the film but I agree it ran out of energy near the end.

Liked it. Genuinely scary (honestly the only film of the fest I'd say that about so far) and it exceeded its low budget limitations by having some genuine pathos and a cathartic payoff to it. Satisfying little film.

Yeah, even between individual cuts or shots I thought there were distracting discrepancies in volume. It wasn't film ruining or anything, but I was surprised when the people I was with claimed they didn't notice it.

Surprise film today was Jennifer Lynch's Chained. I promised myself I wasn't going to go, but I was sitting at home bored, phoned up the box office and managed to nab a return ticket :o Decent enough film - grimy and discomforting for the duration. Vincent D'Onofrio gives a weiirrrdd performance as the psychotic antagonist - occasionally effectively strange, but overall OTT IMO. The setup was contrived and incredible throughout, but the atmosphere was suitably unsettling. Much of the hardwork was undone by a completely ludicrous twist ending. If there was one thing I learned at this year's Horrorthon, it was that a lot of horror film directors find it really, really hard to wrap up their films well.

When I saw American Mary awhile back the sound was fine. I'm assuming either someone screwed up or there were issue with the copy they screened.

Guessed that Chained would be the surprise film and really glad I didn't bother going to see it. It's not a bad film but its so derivitive of the superior Bereavement that it could easily be a film produced by The Asylum. Been a long time since I saw a film that so shamelessly and blatantly rips off another. Lynch has been called on it at a numbeR of screenings and even had the exeditor of Fangoria, Tony Timpone public call her on her on it.
