Tyre insurance?

While paying for my new car, which runs on RFT I enquired about the process behind punctures and flats, etc. After explaining it, the salesman than proceeded to tell me about tyre insurance where for about e450 (I think), you get 3 years cover for everything except wear and tear. Since I've had exactly one puncture in 10 years, it didn't seem like good value to me, but I wonder what others think?

My mother has a car on RFTs for over 5 years and 110k kms - she's had maybe three punctures, but has never had to replace a tyre due to anything other than wear.

I think the idea of tyre insurance is not a bad one but not at 150 euros a year. Maybe at a quarter of this price it might be good value. I also think I've had just one puncture in the last 10 years

Yeah, I thought if I didn't get any pops in the 3 years, 1 week before the period ends, I could run all 4 tyres into a sinkhole and get all new wheels :p

Tyre insurance would make sense, if runflats weren't repairable.

Eh? Just keep the €450 in your bank account.

In a way... the new Nissan GTR uses nitrogen instead of air in the tyres because air pressure fluctuates 'too much' due to heat :pac:

I think Lexus used to do that in the LS400, to make the cars quieter.

Argon IIRC, probably a few more high end brands used it as the factory fill too.

Every time I see a nitrogen truck filling up a bulk container, I get the urge to do a 80's rock guitar solo - nice fog rolling along the ground.

Anyhoo, on topic - you want to be rolling on some pretty costly tyres to justify this. Sounds a bit mad. €450? Not like €4.50 per tyre or something?

I know someone who was very glad he insured his wheels and tyres. The car was an Audi R8 and a new tyre was astronomically expensive. Near US$1000.

I'd say your acquaintance got it at a much better rate than 450 for 3 years!
If I could afford to buy, tax, insure, maintain, and fuel an R8 - I'd mostly likely have 1000USD in me back pocket at any given time!
Which is neither here nor there, I suppose -but whats 450 euro in dollars - 580 at the moment? You'd want to be damaging tyres regularly to make it pay.
Although, the last time I saw an R8 I met it on the road between Ballydehob and Skibbereen so maybe...

08 520d. And don't worry, I'm not stupid, I have bear insurance as an optional buy in on my VHI and being abducted by space aliens/people from Cavan is a rider on my life assurance.

Maybe there's more effective insurance/warranty you could buy - have you read the thread of BMW diesel doom?
