    Ok guys, contentious issue here.
Having a debate in the apartment here that needs to be solved.
How do YOU make porridge and which is nicer; water based porridge or milk based? Personally I'm all for the purity of water, or whatever.

My flatmates say milk. fools. :D

Milk - water is too err, watery. Good dollop of cream and sugar as well, to tone down the "healthiness" of it all.

I always do milk, nice and creamy :D Top it off with some honey or fruit.

    Yay winter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Witchie

Water and a bit of salt. Traditional way is the best.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,058 ✭✭✭✭Abi

Pot, always.. MUST be served with two parts milk and one part cream, stir consistently. What you add to it after that is your own gig. For a winter warmer, add raisins and a pinch of cinnamon to taste.

Or you could add water to your porridge.

I pour the porridge into a bowl and put the milk on top, leave it for around 3-4 minutes till it gets mushy and then eat!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,709 ✭✭✭✭Mr. CooL ICE

I go for 75% milk 25% boiling water and top it off with honey.

I had just water when I was in college and got sick of it after about 2 months. The above way has served me well for almost 2 years and I still lurve it.

Milk. Water is for those who think "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" was too decadent.

  • Site Banned Posts: 563 ✭✭✭Wee Willy Harris

My nan used to put salt, n double cream in there n all sorts. Sugar... resembled more of a desert; first thing thus contradicting the purpose

Milk. And stick a big dash of honey into it too, or jam.

    Water, ugh, wrong.

Jesus it not the Masterchef final he is cooking for.

I would suggest that you soak the porridge in eg 1 part porridge and 1 part water overnight. (cooks faster next morning)
When going to cook next morning add 1 part milk stirring until boiling and add sugar as required.
Serve in bowl or cooled with a dash of milk.

Why in the name of Christ would you make it with water?

    Milk, apple, raisins and cinnamon.

Make the porridge with water then add in half a pot of yogurt. Add in strawberries and blueberries. Tinned peaches are yum in porridge, the juice really sweetens the porridge.

Whatever you decide to do don't rely on that show with the misleading title that's always on UKTV Gold and Dave..........I've seen every episode but have yet to see a decent bowl of porridge made

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

I like to pour the porridge into a bowl then fuck the bowl into the bin and have a proper breakfast instead.

I normally stir in some golden syrup (or honey occasionally), but the tinned peaches sounds like a good idea to try too.

I prefer it with milk, but it always sticks to the pan, probably due to me being an impatient cook, never seen to have that problem with water though.

  • Site Banned Posts: 563 ✭✭✭Wee Willy Harris

I don't really consider water an addition at all, just an essential part if the process who the fcuk actually makes their porridge with milk?!! Much as I love the stuff.. are you sure that's not ready brek

What I add is about 3 of these:

    http://www.linwoodshealthfoods.com/

Chinese man told me, "Goji berry better than viagra" but they've got their work cut out here there's even chocolate; kids!! Otherwise known as cocoa.

Made with milk, add in a tablespoon of Tesco Value Lemon Curd to make Lemon Meringue Porridge. Amazing.

Alternatively, honey, cinammon and hot chocolate powder (Options Chocolate Brownie if possible) mixed up to make delicious sweet porridge without much calories
