With my first season on the Shannon nearly finished before it got started I wanted to ask any seasoned boat owners out there if it is normal to be completed shafted by a boat trading marina ? or did it just happen to be the one that I had the very misfortune to buy a boat from !:(

Sorry to hear you didn't have a good first year, what happened.
Nearly all second hand boats are sold as seen and it's up to the buyer to get an independent survey done, on the rare occasion you might get a boat that comes with a warranty.

Yup, as Fergal says it's up to the buyer to make sure they get a proper survey done before handing over thousands. Plus in most cases the broker is only acting as a sales agent and merely facilitates the sale as an independent third party.

Sorry to hear you've had problems with the boat though.

It is vitally important to have a survey carried out prior to purchasing a vessel for two reasons, firstly to establish the condition of the vessel and secondly to insure the vessel your insurance company will require a condition survey if the vessel is over ten years old.
Many purchasers see the cost of a survey as another cost on top of the purchase price however in the majority of cases the surveyor will find items needing attention which can then be used to renegotiate the purchase price accordingly.
Always, always have a survey carried out prior to purchase, it establishes the seaworthyness of a vessel you may be trusting with your and your familys lives.
