As I mentioned on the Swords Sportive thread..
Just gauging what interest there would be in a Boards spin on a Sun in Oct.
It may not total 100km (depending on what route I choose ) taking in the less used roads for the first section and a few bergs and possibly a coffee stop.
Maybe starting aorund the very Northern edge of Swords taking in Lusk-Skerries-Ardgillan-Bog-Ballyboughil.
I have a route more or less done in my head just need to commit it to Map My Ride etc
    Any thoughts!?!

    Would be up for that

+1. I was hoping to do the Swords spin too because it would be a new route for me even though I live quite close to it but since it is restricted to club members I would be on for this or same as Swords spin (almost) any Sat/Sun morn.

    Sounds good B.
Will The Naul feature in the route?

EDIT: Just out of curiousity, can someone tell me which way is harder, Naul towards Drogheda or Drogheda towards Naul?

The hill is known as Snowtown:
IMO its harder from Dogheda to Naul.
Its more or less the same height except a lot shorter I think.

As regards will it it be included? Well it kinda depends on what sort of distance people want. But maybe a stiff climb and fast descent leading to a coffee stop in the Seamus Ennis centre in The Naul!?!

The latter, especially if you go via Bellewstown.

That was quick, would definitely be up for that.
You could try Lusk - Man O'War - Skerries - Ardgillan - Courtlough - Bog Berg - nags head via quarry - Ballyboughal - Garristown incl Boranstown climb - Naul - Naul Wall back to Swords. That is probably a bit short of the 100km might need to annex south Meath and take in Snowtown Mullaghteelin

    Or

Swords - Ballyboughal - Nags Head - Five Roads - Man O'War - Lusk - Rush -Baldungan- Skerries - Ardgillan - Balrothery or Courtlough- Bog of Ring - Naul - Snowtown - Mullaghteelin - Bellewstown - Ardcath - Garristown - Oldtown - Swords

    OK.
Have done a map and will try and link here in a bit.
Its coming in at 73km (add in what you cycle to and from the start point).
Its a bit twisty but I have delibaretly tried to avoid the well known used roads/climbs.
Mostly rolling across some back roads which if its dry will be dusty and if its wet will be muddy.:)
2 short but steep climbs with 2 longish climbs.
I have also tried to not double track on the same roads but the road out and back from the start/finish point will probably be the same road simply to avoid the main N1.

Start finish point St Colmcilles GAA/Old Motorala factory in Swords
Mid point seems to be Naul where we can stop for coffee if the will is there.

    Sorry guys about the map.
I have just made it public now.
I am just using it as a start and will have to tweek it a little as I took a small spin on the section that is closest to me and was dissappointed to see that the farmers seem to have finished working the fields and may not be as muddy or pave-ish ;)and are nice and smooth.
Plus there is a section where its a fast descent and the road is dangerous and with numbers who are interested building may have to divert off this.

Can anyone get involved in this spin ???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

I suppose so. But I would imagine we will be tipping along at a steady pace of 27-30km and a decent ability to handle a bike as some of the roads and descents will be tricky.

My place of residence is more West Dublin than North Dublin. Would I be allowed to join in?

I promise to be on best behaviour and will stand at the back of the queue when we stop for coffee.

Nice route, you are definitely avoiding the main roads on that one. I better leave the Dogma and Lightweights at home.

cheers @bcmf might try the route over the weekend to see what its like and get back to you, wouldnt want to hold anyone up. I am quite new to cycling but i have been clocking up the mileage over the last couple of months 50k during the week and big 70-80k spin at weekends but no group cycling done

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

Well you can bring them but dont expect to bring them home in the same condition

Stava says 3.4% gradient in the naul side but 5.6% coming the other way. you also have the prevailing wind in your face

There's no net elevation gain in the first 800m (around 45% in length terms) or so of that segment - the rest of it is steeper than the other way though. Basically from the Naul side it's shorter and sharper

To be fair the snowtown northbound then left is probably a better segment but that still puts the elevation at only 4.6% and the momentum that you carry after going through a busy Naul village at 70kmh carries you over the first half:-)

Regardless- on this spin we will be going up it from the Naul side and taking a left at the top for a quick sting before it flattens out (albeit at a decent height) for a bit.

whacker00: You wont hold anyone up. Why dont you come along. I am sure there are plenty of us who will be there who will only happily help you out regarding cycling in a group and this is probably the best way to get an introduction to riding in a group.
Remember when cycling in around the middle/back of a group its so much easier to keep at the speed as you are in effect sheltered.

Either is ok with me. It takes me 50 mins to pedal over so I would prefer the meet no earlier than 9am. I got a sneak preview last Saturday in good weather and did Ballyboghill, Naul, what I think was Snowtown, a racecourse, Bellewstown, Duleek and returned via Garristown annd Oldtown, most of which was new to me. The roads are quiet and good surface but there doesn't seem to be any control over the agri contractors dumping mud and manure on the roads, even though I heard the authorities were very diligent over that way.

Don't forget that the Swords club trip is on the 13th & 14th. A few who are doing that may have expressed interest in the NCB100 also.
