Can't sleep after exercise

    Hi,

I'm having a very frustrating problem.

I've recently started going back to the gym to try getin shape/get fit.
I usually workout out in the late afternoon about 5pm as this is when im feeling my best.

But the night after i workout i can't get to sleep. It's not just tossing and turning, but it's like my heart is still beating quite hard. It's not fast, last night it was 66bpm, but it's .. louder, or harder. More pronounced anyway.

My breathing feels different as well. Slightly laboured. It's hard to describe.

But basically it's like my body hasn't come down after the exercise, even though its 6 hours later and i actually feel sleepy.

I got little sleep last night because of it and am a wreck today.

I'm too worried about losing more sleep now to go back to the gym tomorrow.

I'm not doing anything to excessive either, couple of chest exercises and 15mins on the treadmill. I'm 35, slim, dont smoke, drink occasionally.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks.

Do your workout in the morning and see if there's any difference.

You should try doing it in the morning, before going to work. Exercise may jump start your day. :)

    Are you taking Any drugs?

I experienced similar after a hard workout the day after a bender comprisin of alcohol, ecstasy or cocaine.

Best give it a day or two after a rough night out!

no i gave all that up years ago. ill try workout earlier in the day, and do REALLY light workouts.

from what i've read it could be overtraining symptoms.
but its very frustrating tho, cos i dont feel like im doing too much at the time.

OP my wife is Chinese and I've had to go the hospital a couple of times when over there - once for food poisoning and the second because i slipped and hurt my back (needed an MRI after that). Both times the docs spoke English and were clearly highly educated like any Western one. Don't go to one of the street ones, go to the equivalent of an A&E in a hospital there and you'll be taken care of just fine. Get yourself checked out.

How often are you exercising, and is your life stressed right now? I had a very similar thing years ago when I was using the gym a lot. I ended up with chronic insomnia. For me it was a combination of stress and heavy exercise. What you describe sounds familiar, that 'loud' heartbeat and being wide awake mentally yet exhausted. Now, my doctor put me on beta blockers which did not help at all, I thought they were awful for me. Relaxation techniques and giving up stimulants (tea, coffee, chocolate), plus reducing stress helped me.

    Oryx,

yeah i've had to cut out stimulants over the years because of insomnia. but just recently ive been feeling relaxed, was really looking forward to some exercise, but its still a problem.

As much as it sounds difficult because of being in a foreign environment, I'd definitely seek medical advice. Oryx (or anyone on this forum) may have experienced the same as you, but it's hard to be sure and it sounds enough of an issue to warrant getting yourself checked out. Best of luck with it, hopefully you'll be able to exercise without any odd side effects soon.
