Weight gain over time?

    So I've heard that its harder to loose weight as you get older. Before having kids I weighed 60kg which I thought was alright, always wanted to be slimmer but I think that's just the nature of the beast. I put on a lot of weight in my first pregnancy (license to eat magnums every day) and got pregnant again after less than a year. After second pregnancy got back to 64kg but plateaued there and never managed to get back to pre-baby weight. Now after the third child I am stuck at 68kg. I'm over thirty (just) and wonder is it realistic for me to be aiming to weight what I did when I was 24?

    Depends on how hard you are willing to work. It's the unfortunate truth that losing weight gets harder as you get older.

    The good news is that if you get it under control now it's easier to keep it that way than start from scratch aged 44.

    The best advice I can give you is to get rid of the diet-quick-fix mentality, believe me that the sooner you start practising how you plan to live the rest of your life, the easier it gets as time goes on.

    Base your diet on fresh foods that you cook yourself. Limit eating out (including most kinds of pre-made pre-packaged food) to twice per week maximum.

    Eat plenty of protein, drink water, lots of veg, a moderate amount of fat and match carbs to activity. Relax, try to get enough sleep (tough with two little ones I'm sure - but being sleep deprived ramps up the appetite big time). Make yourself a priority, you can only give your best to others when you take care of yourself first.

    Older people find losing weight difficult because they pay less attention to diet and exercise. Avoid foods that are rich in fats and sugar and if you are diabetic substitute sugar with zero-calorie natural sweeteners like stevia.
