So anyone tried the demo yet?

I think the steering is a bit floaty... something seems a bit off on it. The track detail looks a lot better than 2011 though. The Young Drivers test is bog standard and as I expected it to be, but it's good for newcomers of the game.

I think I'll still invest in it despite my slight disliking of the cars mechanics. I'll be tweaking my steering and braking settings (braking seems a little off too) until I find something I'm happy with.

Also, now up to 16 player online! Nearly at 24 now ;)

    link to demo?

Demo can be downloaded from steam if you are on PC. Yes, I agree the default wheel settings are far from perfect. I've a Fanatec wheel (GT3) and the wheel sensitivity settings were doing nothing, no matter what I adjusted. Someone on the codemasters forums suggested enabling the 'override input device type' and at least the wheel settings now actually do something. I like a very sensitive wheel and have the wheel saturation set to 25%, but this seems to overdo things a bit. The understeer at Curva Parabolica in Monza is dire in comparison to F1 2011.

Got the demo for PS3 last night and I use a controller, have to say i find it brilliant now, I always struggled with the past 2 on the controller but this one hits the nail on the head.

They have put work into the controller use and it really shows, the graphics are also very impressive as well.

Stand out part for me in the noise, its immense.

I will try to download both PC and PS3 demo, this could take ages 'cos Im on mobile BB.

Anyway, bought F1 2010 on PS3, not great I have to say, but ok for a first attempt I suppose..

Skipped 2011 'cos I was determined they wouldnt get my money again and nothing much seemed to have changed.

Glad they brought out a demo of this so I can see if its improved..

    really hope it has..

Well 2011's car mechanics was vastly improved over 2010's IMO. 2012's mechanics seem different again though and I'm not sure if it's a good thing... then again I haven't had the free time to change the settings yet.

I'm going to take the dive.

Anyone interested in the F1 2012 2 Pack on Steam? Would work out at 30 euro each :)

Tried it last night on PS3, only for 15 minutes though, car felt good, not sim good mind, but good enough to have a laugh with.

Still have to download the PC Demo, might jump into bed with you on that one CherryGhost :)

    Avid F1 2011 player here.

I tried the demo and it does seem quite different handling wise. Slow corners are very tricky, fast corners feel more assured. But I think that makes sense. In slow corners the aerodynamics aren't generating much downforce for you, so the car tends to understeer. You have to be more careful about your braking to make sure you dont overshoot the corner

I'm going to go all assists off. Could not get a handle on traction control in 2011. But was starting to get the hang of it in the demo already

It does look better visually IMO. The sound is good too (apart from all the squealy tyres which is a bit over the top). Menu presentation and music seems better. I like the look of the season challenge and champions modes as well, decent additions.

One shot qualification is a nice feature, as my racing league did that in any case. We just had to marshall it ourselves, now itll be handled by the game

2011 had 16 players online as well by the way (and you can add 8 AI if you want to make the full grid). In 2012 they concentrated on making it more stable for 16 players, as at times lag was an issue in 2011.

Penalty system looks improved, and hopefully that will cut down on the idiots who drive like stock car drivers online.

Im very interested to see how Codemasters integrate the Racenet stuff. Could be a very nice feature, with online stats, and weekly competitions to participate in etc.

All in all, looking forward to getting it this weekend :D

Although, just found out that they've removed tyre wear scaling!

So if you are doing a 25% race, the tyres will wear at the same rate as a 100% race. If in a 100% the softs last 15 laps, that's how long they last in 25% as well. Which basically means you do all the race on the faster softs, then switch to the slower prime tyres on the penultimate lap to satisfy the tyre rule :(

Even in a 50% race it would basically end up always as a 1 stopper  (if it stays dry)

Codies say they will release an explanation about this, but it's rather worrying indeed, as it seems like a lot of the strategy element will be removed if this is the case

Yeah, seems very strange indeed, 'specialy for AI if they pit early and run remainder on Primes, you would walk the race..

Yeah was going to pick this up meself later but having a gaming break bug for me when using the DFGT wheel. The steering wheel lock although set to 270 degrees in logitech profiler doesnt work ingame apart from on the pause menu. When im actually driving its set to the full 900 degrees lock which when turning at speed gives me tonnes of understeer litrally have to spin the wheel all way round 450 degrees to make a turn. Think ill be holding back from buying this now till they fix it which will probably be never going by there history.

If its anything like the previous two its nothing more than a bog standard arcade game with a lucrative licensing deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,964 ✭✭✭Sitec

Enjoying the demo, sound is excellent, handling is great but I can't get a good feel of the brakes. I'm either braking a bit early or late!

What? This was the same as F1 2011. I didn't think it was much of a problem. In fact I prefer it this way.

Same goes for fuel usage and its settings.

Far from it, the game is being slated on every simracing community forum i frequent with people saying its worse than the previous two efforts and apparently a lot of features like a single GP were left out.

LOL i just noticed i edited your post instead of quoting you lol sorry :)

I must say I'm enjoying it for what it is. I need to put some time in at the weekend to figure out the steering, but playing on PC with trackIR and 3D vision is fantastic!

I frequent many racing sims forums and I don't see many complaints at all. It's not an arcade racer, it's not a sim. It's in between, and IMO it does it pretty well. A lot of steering wheel users happy with 2012, it seems they've finally listened and got a good balance going with it...

Which comes to the issue with the demo I had. There's an override button in the menu to choose gamepad/steering wheel. Both feel very different. I finally got the setup done right and now it feels good. Compared to F1 2011 I can't really attack the corners as much I feel, it makes the game slightly harder. I'm actually struggling on Legendary mode now :)

There's a few bugs to be had though. There's issues with smoke and engine blow-ups. Most of the community says 'oh it's from overrevving the engine' but it's not. It happens all the time without reason. If you have flashbacks enabled and do one, sometimes your engine blows up when you play again. It's retarded.

I've done 5 50% and 1 100% race so far and to be honest the sound is amazing. In Monaco you can hear the engine, and sometimes tyre squeals, bounce off the walls, giving an amazing echo. It's things like this that makes me yearn for a surround sound system :P Unfortunately it's not all good and the god damn pit crew are still dull and a lot of sound bytes have been copied from 2011.

Graphically they've put more effort into the tracks compared to 2011. The car models are fantastic compared to previous years. Really nice. I see a lot of fantastic screenshots going around.

One more thing to note is that unlike 2011, when you go offline into the grass and you try full throttle your way through, you can't. Either your car spins to stop you cheating, your cars revs start bouncing like fook and your speed plummets, and then you're flagged for cutting corners etc.

Overall I'm still getting into it, I loved 2011 and so far 2012 is about on par. There's some parts I like, some I don't, some I'm still to get used to.

On a seperate note, Anthony Davidson and codemasters are doing excellent 'hot lap' videos on Youtube at the moment.

If you saw the iracing forum you would see a totally different picture mate but then again a lot of those guys are hardcore [some of them elitist] about simracing and unless its 100% hardcore it sucks to them which is fine because to be fair it comes down to what the end user is into and wants from their simracing/racing/gaming.
I really enjoy MMORPGs, some people hate them and so on :)
I played a bit of it yesterday for about 2 hours and enjoyed it, i dont see it as a sim at all when you compare it to the likes of iracing, netkar, live for speed, rfactor,GTR etc.
You just do not get the feeling of a car on the track like those sims mentioned.
What i will say is once you turn off all aids it does take a step forward from your typical arcade racer but as you say the game sits between sim and arcade which is fine by me as these days i dont take my racing anywhere near as serious as i used to when i had more time.
Thank God they changed the sounds, they are pretty damn good now for sure.
You cannot underestimate the value of a good sound sample.
Overall its a very good F1 game with just a nice balance between arcade and sim.

The online mode is crap, can't go into the first corner without some dick head running into the back of my car.

This wrecks my head, Monza last night made a brilliant start from 3rd into First through first Chicane and some prick rear ends me! I finished 3rd by the end and was given the race win due to penalties but it wrecks my head. Anyone here want to get a race going?

Not at all, you take it as serious as you like but most there just want a place to enjoy clean racing.
They hold non competitive race nights too purely for clean racing.

I wouldnt touch public racing with a barge pole on any racing game or sim, havent done for years.

Last night took the biscuit, racing at China I managed to go from 11th to 3rd by the first corner without hitting anyone. By the third corner I was hit four times from behind and the side. Its wrecking my head....For the first time I did feel the urge to knock someone off the track because of this. Felt good :D

O.K, It was my Birthday recently and I was given the PS3 version last night.

I had already downloaded the Demo and was not too impressed....The rookie tests felt quite good but when on a different circuit it felt like a totally different game and I didn't play it after that.

So Last night I fired up the Full version and was quite impressed actually, once you settle down and stop trying to drive it like a sim it actually handles quite well!

It works WELL with a wheel YAY!!!

I own the 2010 version and gave up because the handling quirkes were too much, the half spins felt totally canned and there was no transition to loss of grip, it just had you off for no apparent reason.

The 2012 version feels much better in this respect (I didnt buy 2011) I can now set up series of corners and hit apexes!

Above all I would definately not call this arcade, and not sim either...

I think the biggest attraction in this will be racing other cars, sometimes in sims I'm perfectly happy just to turn laps on my own, just enjoying handling the car around a race track, racing other people almost seems a distraction.

With 2012 as there's not a huge depth to the driving model, so battling with other cars should be the attraction here.

All in all, a welcome surprise..

One last thing, it seems to me the Demo is slightly different from the full version, if the purpose of the demo is to give you a taster, why does it feel slightly different (worse IMO).

In my opinion, yes it's defintely worth getting even if you own 2011. The immersion with 3D Vision is incredible and really adds to the game, the audio is much improved and you have the new circuit of the Americas too. Others may still berate the game for its bugs, but they aren't dealbreakers for me. I find it a lot of fun to play and that's all the counts in my book.

Thanks. I had 2010 and thought it was good despite all the bugs, loved 2011 so think I might just go and get this one. I assume for the 3D vision you need a 3D TV? Is there no tyre wear scaling in this game or how is it different to 2011? Really adds to the game.

So you can drive on the faster tyres until the last lap and pit to change your tyres to adhere by the rules? Doesn't seem very realistic.

Probably been asked before, but can you get extra helmet designs for the PS3, the ones that come with the game are really dire.
