Any game played in trousers should not be considered a sport.

I don't know but if he did that makes him even more of a legend.

Right so... this is sorted, Rory updated his website this morning and I grabbed a screenshot:

i'd say rory cares very little what we in ireland think or britain as its likely he will be one of the greats of golf so in 30years times when people are talking about him , his nationality won't be under the microscope but his golfing talent will be what he will be remembered for

He is British..nothing special about that lots of people are British.....whats the big deal?

It is good he cleared it up :-) He should have done it sooner. But no bad feeling at all.

Now we know and we respect his culture and how he identifies himself just like we would expect him or any British person to respect our culture and how we identify ourselves.

No big deal...and no bad feelings whatsoever, why should there be:-)?

    I respect his cultural identity.

He is British and represents Britain and not the ROI.

He should not have to worry about being who he is.

We await Bill O'Herlihy's contribution that when he was growing up golf was a Protestant game

I'm going to take a wild guess here from your location as to your "identity." If he was William Donald from the Shankill Rd would you be so forceful in claiming him? It's his life; let him do what he wants.

Come on. You get that sort of thing almost everywhere.

The point is that it's this chap's own decision who he represents. It's not about which set of fans make greater tits of themselves, because to be quite frank, and I mean no disrespect to our neighbours, I don't think that's us...

People have to understand that there are people on this island who feel Irish but live in the UK ie. N Ireland, and vice versa. Nobody is asking him to declare for ROI (golf is all island, forget the ROI/tricolour thing for a min). Instead he feels British.

And he is not British. He is Northern Irish. Yes his passport says British on it, why? because a UK passport says British on it. A UK passport will never say 'N Irish' on it.

Like I said many British pp holders are v welcome to feel Irish. And Irish pp holders can feel British.

Some in the North have a right to claim to be British based on ancestry. We have to ask ourselves why after a few hundred years they still havens integrated to Irish society.
Because they have fully integrated into Northern Irish Society, it is a seperate country.

I'm not claiming anyone or anything. I couldn't give a fuck about golf.
I was taking the piss out of that person's post. From reading it it sounded like they were trying to convince themselves more than anyone else.
Regarding Mr Donald from the Shankill Road he is free to describe himself in any daft way he wishes. I however will always consider him to be every bit as Irish as Paddy Michael Proinsias O'Flaherty who lives in thatched cottage in the Ring of Kerry.

I would put it to you that you are firstly Northern Irish...... then British if you choose to be so. You are not de facto British.

Yes, you can hold passports for both if you like. I saw a report on the news a while ago about students form NI applying for Irish pass ports to avail of a no fees thing in Scottish universities. It doesn't apply to British citizens, so they were all getting Irish ones to get in on the free education.
That annoyed me to be honest. If you considered yourself British, and only British, so only had a British passport, you shouldn't be allowed to claim Irish nationality just to avail of something free. But that's beside the point....

If they were willing to declare themselves Irish they they can't have been total foreigners in the first place. That small % of Irish feeling is good enough for me.

It only existed as a state(let) since partition. They were here long before that.

The fact of the matter is that Ulster was cleared out almost completely of Irish people during the plantations. A lot of people in NI don't actually have any Irish heritage beyond being from NI themselves. It was not just a case of a bunch of Brits coming here and deciding they'd stay and then integrating themselves with the natives.
A lot of people still seem to have this mindset and that is one of the main problems in NI. People need to start integrating, because the cold hard facts are that the situation isn't going to magically fix itself. No matter how many people might be holding on to the idea of a United Ireland it's not happening. Neither will everyone living there suddenly decide they're perfectly fine with just being British.
It's easier said than done, but they basically need to just start getting along. Adults who are raising their kids as Loyalists or Nationalist need to cop on and start raising their kids as normal decent people and teach them to respect everyone based on their individual person, not on what flag they wave.
