Pretty sure the club at least exists, in the gym itself I remember there being strength standard charts put up under a 'DU Weightlifting' heading as well as an email address for it too...but if they're active, they're not very visible, don't think I've ever seen them at Freshers' Week...

Fair enough. Might head to the gym a bit and ask around. Seems like something that would exist given amount of societies there are for everything else

I wanted to start a strength training club for ladies in college but with the poor response I got from girls in my class (who should be all for promoting fitness and strength training) put me off trying to set one up. :(

Never seen or heard of such a club in college.

A friend of mine is in a weight lifting society so it exists. I think he mentioned that it only started up recently. I'm a girl and would likely join it :)

As far as a web presence, I think they only have a facebook page and an e-mail address. I can't remember what either are, but there is a sign up somewhere in the gym.

I've also seen a guy doing snatches in the ancillary hall the other day. It looks like they have a platform and some bumper plates now, which is pretty sweet as trying to do Olympic lifts in the main gym is near impossible with all the dozy eejits in there that don't look where they are going and walk right up into your space.

That sounds pretty nice. Will have to look into it and hopefully they'd take someone new to olympic lifting in. If they're all monsters I might come back in a year :p

I run the judo club, I can tell you that outside of the big popular sports, most of us will take any member we can get.

Things like football, soccer or rugby, you know the popular ones.

    Rugby presumably.

    Trinity needs a Crossfit club.

Probably Rugby, Boat club, Athletics and Swimming. Well, they're the ones that always have members on the DUCAC committee yokeymabob.

How much does the boat club train? Could you do the weightlifting doc too?

Couldn't tell you. I know my friend joined the club in 1st year and it was quite intense. They trained out at Islandbridge early on either a Saturday or Sunday morning. Like really early. Thinking of joining it this year myself although being in final year I'm not sure I'll have the time.

    Rower here,

If you are a novice you won't have very many early starts this side of christmas.

    More like 9,10,11 am.

You will have two land sessions during the week (tues and thurs) and be in Islandbridge on the weekend.

Training gets tougher leading up to racing season but by that stage you will know if you enjoy it or not

Is there enough space to deadlift near the squat racks? Or even enough space to deadlift anywhere?

Just about! Well, when the gym is busy it can be a bit dangerous down in the weights section. It's grand when it's quiet.

Surely people arent that ignorant. Like walk somewhere else?!

Its more a case of there being no where else to walk sometimes. It can feel very cramped during busy periods.

    Rubbery stuff. (I think)

are the squat racks cages or power racks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

    They're cages.

On top of it being cramped there, a lot of people make very little effort to stay out of your way, and they hardly ever put the stuff back when they've finished using it which reduces space further.

And no one ever tells them to put the sht back in its original place?

Well surely they can wait that extra 20-30 seconds?

Good stuff, don't have to look after the floor. :D

*Don't know what term you use to describe the squad above novice at Trinity. I'm not a novice, trust me...

if they're cages then deadlifting in them shouldn't be a problem? the cage does a good job of keeping people from getting too close to you

They have 5 bars and 3 cages.

You're the judo soc guy right? Just wondering, what weight are you at and how does that affect your mobility? I've been staying at around 140lbs at a very low bodyfat for agility but I wanna go up in weight now to about 170. just wondering how that would affect me if I took up judo this year

If you want to be mobile, train mobility.

170lbs is about 77kg, which would put you about half way between the 73 and 81. If that was your weight you'd either have to face people who are bigger than you in competition, or you'd have to cut 4 kilos.

Yeah the 73kg weight class should be ok for me, don't wanna go as heavy as 81, I'll have to see how easy it is for me to keep up a weightlifting routine along with the judo schedule. Looking forward to joining up!

One more question btw, it says on your site you guys do german jujutsu as well. To what extent would that be? Like is there much striking involved? (seems to have muay thai kind of elements in it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

The website needs to be updated. I'm not sure how much longer the guy who coaches German JJ is going to be around.
