One of the understated beauties of the 50mm is that it can force you to do the slightly clichéd thing of 'zoom with your feet'.

Meanwhile on Grafton Street, Dublin Fashion Festival was in full flow. I zoomed with my feet until security started to get concerned. Sun was harsh but in an Irish summer I shouldn't complain about the sun.

So, I was at my nephew's christening today, and as usual, I got drafted in (perfectly willingly) as staff photographer for the day.

Normally, I'd have stuck the 24-70 on and clicked away merrily. Funny enough, I prefer primes, and 'embrace the limitations' rather than being put off by them when I'm shooting recreationally, as it were. But I do like the safety net of the zoom when other people have some expectations of what will appear at the end of the day (also I chickened out for a few minutes in the middle and went back to the zoom, pity, because this shot of the four grandparents is one of my favourite shots from today, and it doesn't fit on this thread!).

What I was surprised by was how much the idea of it being a project (moreso than the choice of focal length, or the fact that I was using a prime) made me want to document the day better. Nothing like a mission to, eh, focus the mind!

I have to say, the priest took my niece giving it the full Nelson Muntz 'Ha ha' better than could have been expected... :)

    More from Grafton Street.

This young chap did the unusual thing of exploiting the bass guitar as a solo instrument - of much beauty and he extolled its virtues. Loved it. I think it's a difficult thing for a bassist to pull off and requires a distinct skill and ability. One measure of buskers is if they stop you in your tracks. This guy did. Bravo to him.

i had a really nice weekend, the thread gave me a bit more motivation to get out and do something and i was always thinking about what i could do with the camera! so yesterday we had a bbq, and today went kite flying (in the rain..) i found it hard to pick one photo. ( hope its ok to put a few on here?..)
i love my 50 so that bit wasnt a problem.
the puddle photo i wanted to take over his shoulder looking into the reflection, but i wasnt brave enough to get close enough and risk getting soaked!!

As my digital camera was out on loan, I dusted down my Olympus Om10 with its 50mm 1.8 and tried to do some film nifty fifty shooting, was challenging but fun...

I managed to get my nifty 50 out when shooting some promo stuff for a band before they played that night in the Academy.
Great bunch of lads and a great gig too. [©Original Image] It was taken sunday evening btw. :)

A newbie question, sorry if i sound silly, How do I use my 18-55 lens as a 55mm (by the way I'm going to invest in a 50mm soon)

Twist it until the arrow points to 55mm

Look through the viewfinder. Zoom to its max. Lo and behold, you've zoomed to 55mm, which is, funnily enough, 55mm ;)
If you leave it at its widest (so when you look through the viewfinder you are seeing the widest view the lens allows) you are at 18mm. Are you seeing the pattern?

    No I didn't!!! How?

Twist it until it points to 50mm!!!

Or take photos and check the exif

I'm assuming your lens doesn't have a 50mm mark, so set it to just short of the 55mm, take a shot, then check the image properties (or exif information). Rinse and repeat. When you hit the spot, mark it with a small sticker.
