If we have a system of cancelling the bus lane when they are needed most then we are a shower of dumb fuk knuckle draggers and I will take glee in watching people sitting in their cars in traffic rotting for the next 40 years because we refuse to treat the cause.

I don't agree with closing the bus lane but the Mayor did something very similar during the summer with the outdoor living room. While he didn't actually close a bus lane the detour caused by the closure of The Crescent eliminated any time saved by buses using the bus lane.

That's not similar at all. That is closing a road for a civic event and happens all the time. Should we cancel Paddy's day and the Limerick Marathon.

This is some dinosaurs who are afraid of change throwing a strop because the "feel like" it is better for their business with nothing to actually back that up. These "taking away our roads" fears never come true.

All that traffic up O'Connell St. is commuter traffic and it's there all year. None of them are pulling in for a shop.

I knew you'd disagree 🤣 but St Patrick Day and a marathon is a one day event, closing a section of a road with a busy bus route for a month is absolutely crazy especially when you spend millions in creating a bus lane along the same route

Traffic gridlock around the south court at lunchtime today, including ambulances stuck with nowhere to go. All for cycle lanes...

The closure of the crescent was over a summer month when traffic is generally lower and did not close any bus only lane. Buses, like cars, were diverted around 1 block.

Personally speaking I thought the closure was a success. There were some nice family friendly events organised over the period. It was a massive improvement to normal when the area is just a route for cars to drive through.

My problem with it was it made no sense in that location. Surely the "beach" should have been by the river. As for the concerts they should have been less far up the road for maximum exposure.

I never said it closed a bus lane, I said the gains made by using the bus lane further down was lost by having to detour from the closed street

Ambulances are up and down that road all day. There used to be plenty of room for them to drive along with 2 lanes of traffic. Now they are stuck as drivers have nowhere to pull into. I hope no one has to pay the price for the amount of ambulances stuck in traffic there.

Were the cycle lanes segregated or walled off by the South Court recently ?

I know there's bollards around the new ambulance entrance they are building but I didn't see any others.

Also the road from the South Court to the hospital has a bus lane all the way in.

The issue is they are stuck on the R510 (Quinns Cross to South Court). If and when they get to the South Court roundabout there they are fine again.

Spare us the disingenuous rubbish. The type of people that constantly trot out the same old lazy tired lies about ambulances and emergency vehicles being delayed by road improvements not specifically designed to benefit motorists are just the worst. Faux concern to mask their real sentiments. I.E. They hate any non-motorist centric infrastructure and can't bear the fact that facilities are being provided for pedestrians, cyclists, buses etc. In their car brained world the motorist should be facilitated at all times at the expense of everyone else.

The HSE, Fire Service, Gardaí etc are always consulted when active travel imporovements are being planned and they've never flagged an issue. Ambulances can use cycle lanes when needed and I've seen them do so numerous times.

I don't ever remember that road being anything other than 2 lanes.

Also didn't know it had a cycle lane now. Haven't been there in a while.

One thing that is wrong with our cycle lanes is they should all be side by side. I'm sure the people worried about our emergency services would welcome it.

There are 2 cycle lanes on it both with kerbs.

Don't know how some people expect the ambulances to get into them and drive along it. Maybe magic carpets.

At the junction the same way they do all over Europe. That's if they are built side by side.

Just looking at photos of that curb now and it looks tiny. Funny how cars can mount a curb to illegally park.

From DarkJager's post you can see it is not working and ambulances are stuck in the middle of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,669 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ya I can clearly see from the post.

How many ambulances can you see in his post 🤣

    He/She doth protest too much.

Seething at the keyboard at the thought of infrastructure being provided for anyone other than motorists.

Honestly, I'm delighted for these cycle lanes, I'm just annoyed they're not yet open. One of the stupid local councillors sent around letters at one point telling people to object as "It might slow down traffic and children will try to cross the road in front of the school". My dude, are you saying it's better to speed and kill a child than drive slowly? And I doubt ambulances will have so much of an issue, there's plenty of places for cars to move aside at the various junctions (southcourt/centra, centra, the grange, church view, the school in, the school out, the new road). Plus htey can turn on to church view anyway.

Whatever about cycle lanes those school streetscapes and raised pedestrian crossings are great. Looks nice and really does change road behaviour.

Had to wait for an hour for a 304 from outside the Crescent S.C. into town today at 2.30. Why would you inconvenience hundreds of people on a buses just so you can get one person up the road a bit faster in their car!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭ShatterProof

Just goes to show you don’t know what you are talking about. Before the works started the R510 was 1 lane north and 1 lane south. After the work complete the R510 will be 1 lane north and 1 lane south. The only difference will be cars have no place to pull in on this busy ambulance route. Does that make sense, or should I go over it again?

And as for you making jokes about ambulances stuck in traffic tells me all that I need to know about you. Onto ignore you go.

I think every green party supporter will agree that an hour is actually not a bad amount of time to be waiting for a service that is scheduled for every 15 minutes in fairness.

Ambulance using the bus lane to avoid a line of traffic on O'Connell street the other night.

Apologies for the poor picture quality. The ambulance was able to get through so quickly I hardly had time to take out my phone.

I suppose some councillors would like this stopped by allowing private cars to use the bus lane.

Allowing cars to use the bus lane will not materially affect ambulance journey times. Generally once a drive hears a siren or sees a blue light that driver will create space by pulling over to allow the emergency vehicle to move. Where vehicles are corralled into narrow lanes with nowhere to move then that's a more difficult situation for the driver to create space for the emergency vehicle.

I say this as someone who thinks the bus lane should remain a bus lane but I think you're example is a poor example.

Cars sitting in both lanes between Penney's and chicken hut would have nowhere to move

The vehicle on the left squeezes to the left the vehicle on the right squeezes to the right, the emergency vehicle goes up the centre.
