I don't have a clue about the science behind that but I do always love when "sex in public" is lumped in with stabbings.

I wouldn't blame them complaining on the traffic aspect. But I suppose the graveyard has to go somewhere. Pity we still don't have a crematorium in the city.

The new Limerick - Shannon - Ennis bus timetables starts next week. Most noticeably 24hr buses to Shannon.

Took a drive out by Bloodmill Road today. Very significant development work underway. Just wondering how much potential is there for further development in this area. Is it a confined site. If this scale of development could be repeated in the vicinity of the present work, it would be like a new town and a major addition to the city.

Is this site at ballysimon connected to the Horizon site on the dublin road. Any news about the tower block at Opera square.

There is a 'Towlerton Masterplan'. It's a massive site. The school, the hospital and medical center and the new Lidl are the first steps. The masterplan also calls for a hotel, a nursing home, a primary care center, a number of apartment blocks and offices.

Also the Bloodmill Road is to be widened and connected to the new link road within the Towlerton development early next year.

Both landbanks seem to be owned by Kirkland but the huge green space between is earmarked for a park. No time frame for the park to be developed though

Fascinating. It also fascinates me how so many Limerick people remain so negative about the development potential in the city while very significant work is completed, in the course of construction or planned for the near future. Possibly, decades of stagnation and unrealised plans has 'blinded' people to what is actually happening on the ground.

I suppose a large portion of the city will never see Towlerton. And a fair number in Towlerton will probably never see the city seeing as shopping and work is mostly done by car.

The only bit people will be aware of is the hospital which many will see negatively because they thought it was "another" hospital but in fact it's now seen as a "replacement" for a much loved city centre hospital.

I'm very much on the positive side as to how the city is going but I can see how stuff like Towlerton isn't going to get people excited.

They may not be out that way too often to see the Towlerton development (although anyone visiting B&Q, coming in the N24, or travelling the Groody Rd towards UL can't miss it), but surely most will have seen 1BQ, the International Rugby Experience and the Gardens being completed in recent years or the current ongoing construction at the Opera site. All prominent city centre developments, yet the negativity still prevails.

Re Barringtons. It hasn't been a city centre hospital in decades. It's very much been a private health clinic for years, unlike the new hospital which will be a full service (private) hospital.

Would love to see more redevelopment around the docklands. Also that parcel of land across from the icon that has that abandoned mill building.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,837 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

The mill building is in the process of being CPO'd by the council.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I agree about Barrington's and the new facility will have way more but I'm looking at it from the point of view of people who only have very minimal engagement in this sort of topic.

A lot of the negativity in my experience comes from people who think that it's possible to create a city centre full of B&Qs and Harvey Normans that you can park outside for free. Some of it I understand like with the clothes shops but the Crescent has that market cornered sadly.

These groups also won't factor in the benefits of 1BQ or Opera Centre because it doesn't have something specifically for them.

I heard that the site work is complete for the 14 storey building in Bank Place and that construction of the building is due to commence, all going well, in September. Hopefully that information proves correct as that building directly across from the Locke Bar will certainly generate conversation.

apologies if asked already/recently but is there a timeline for the UL/kilmurry road works to be done and the bus stop to be back open?

End of September is the target date according to a recent update by Sorenson.

I think you could sell a house at the moment disconnected from the electricity and water grids, built on an Indian burial ground and haunted by 13 ghosts of murders. Probably for pretty good money such is the housing crisis at the moment.

Antisocial behavior they have a point on, we used to live near Mount St Oliver. Constant problems with it especially at night

I see that a commencement notice has gone in to convert the former Bank Of Ireland / Credit Union building at the corner of Upper William St and Lower Gerald Griffin St into 11 apartments.

Headline in the Business Post that a Chinese investment company is going to build almost 400 houses in Raheen. Sounds interesting for a variety of reasons. Does it show that Limerick City is beginning to attract significant outside investment or is this a one-off. I also wonder will the the company retain ownership of the houses with people renting rather than purchasing their own homes. An acquaintance of ours wanted to downsize and move to an apartment in the development on the former Jury's hotel on the Ennis road but was told that they could only rent as the developer is retaining ownership of all the apartments. Some very significant money 'floating around' at the moment. 'Siec Group has acquired a prime site in Limerick for a €100 million housing project. The land, previously owned by a Belgian millionaire, will see the construction of 384 homes.

Ireland has always attracted foreign investment, first time I've heard of the Chinese getting involved in Limerick, mind I'm sure somebody will be along with an example of how it's happened before

I suspect with the way a lot of Chinese businesses are run they will sell the homes and be on their way with the profit to invest elsewhere, but that is purely speculation

Sounds very similar to when Singaporean investment firm Novelty Icav bought the Horizon Mall site. The walked away from that project after ABP overturned LCCCs grant of planning permission for a mixed used residential, hotel and office development.

O Connell street was buzzing last night. Fire play to John Moran, he is really making an impact and getting people into Limerick city.

New information boards popping up around the city centre as well as new tourist destination signposts.

I thought at first it was just a "3 bridges" thing but they are all over the city.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,857 ✭✭✭✭phog

I think I read that there's plans for 70 new signs but some are duplicates of what's already there.

The next thing they should look at is painting (with murals/art) the ESB, Gas, eir or traffic control boxes/cabinets. There's a newish huge thing put up down from the bike stand on O'Callahan Strand and not alone is it an eyesore it's location is diabolical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Painting the ESB boxes is already a thing. Probably just need to do another round of it.

The one at the top of O'Callaghan Strand is painted but still looks awful because it's taller than the wall and cuts into the nice view.

If you count the full map boards, ground mounted way pointers and lamppost signs I'de say it would easily be 70 all right.

good to hear ,simple things that should have been done years ago finally getting done like those signs

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,837 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

    There's a net increase of 25 signs. 45 removed and 70 installed.

The proposed development will consist of the removal of 45 existing pedestrian wayfinding & information signs and the installation of 70 new pedestrian wayfinding and orientation signs comprising 18 Map Totems, 19 Route Markers and 33 Finger Posts and all associated site works.

In other news the Kings Island flood relief project is to begin in the Autumn with a 2 year construction period.

The apartment block at the corner of Childers Road and Greenfields Road has been granted permission by ABP. Although they have ordered that it be reduced from 21 to 19 apartments.
