Bullet Hell - Where to start?

I love the odd shmup but can't play bullet hell games to save my life. I feel like someone who has been lifted from the 70s playing Pong and handed a joypad and asked to play Gears of War.

So what games started the transition from regular vertical scrolling shmup to the bullet hell variant?

What are the basic techniques and strategies for the genre?

If recommending games think Mame, ps1-2 and Xbox 360. Can locate games for those systems easily enough ;-)
Thanks as always fellow retro nerds!

Fire up MAME and give Dodonpachi a whirl. It's very accessible and one of the best in my opinion.

I've recently done this & played that exact game. I really like it, & found it a great starting place for my descent into shmup insanity

Yeah, that particular one came out before they started getting bat**** insane with screens full of bullets. I think it has just the right amount of things on screen without resorting to sillyness.

Armed Police Batrider is another good one to check out if you like that. Try out Battle Garegga too.

Mushihimesama Futari for the 360 is a great intro to modern bullet hell shmups. A nice mix of old school standards and the modern insane combo systems, and very well judged difficulty / arrange modes. Probably the most accessible of the newer ones, along with Death Smiles (which has more gentle difficulty curves than the others).
What are the basic techniques and strategies for the genre?

    Pink = Bad :P

Also had a blast of Death Smiles {360} this evening. What a fun & cool shmup that is, at least to a beginner anyway!

The best advice I can give you is to concentrate on your ship and not what you are shooting, especially for boss battles. It's better to stay alive than to deal out damage so look at your ship and and move carefully through the gaps in the patterns. Learn where the ships hitbox is as well. Once you know what pixel is the hitbox it makes it a lot easier. Once you get better at dodging bullets you can start showing off and working on your combo's but starting off staying alive is your priority.

Give the raizing/psikyo games a whirl.
    Bat rider/battle garragera etc.
Great games...don't bother with cave:) also Gigawing 1 and 2...and Mars matrix.
And while your at it..border down, under defeat, castle shigami 2,Trizeal and gun bird series

Stupid question but generally speaking does every bullet dole out damage or is there some tolerance in there?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

@TechnoFreek: Also give ESP Ra. De. on Mame a go. Excellent game. Actually that site, http://www.world-of-arcades.net/, has some great info on shmups.

Retr0's advice is sound. In my limited experience of bullet hells, staying alive is actually fairly easy. Only gets difficult when you want to score big. Except for Ibara, that's just bullsh1t hard. :D

At the risk of sounding like Sparks, Raiden is much harder and better than all of the above mentioned games.

Edit: If you have the means, try and play using a decent arcade stick. Not a pad or keyboard.

Andrew, actually have Raiden arcade PCB. Just waiting on a cab to stick it in!

Depends on the game. Most games, it's one hit and you die. However you have to remember that the hit box on your ship is usually only a few pixels in the center, same for bullets only the center is a hit box. So when you watch pro's playing it looks like they are getting hit by the bullets but it's only when the exact center of your ship and the bullet line up that you will take a hit. A lot of bullet hell games start off a lot easier than they look, it's part of the appeal, you look and feel like a pro when in fact you're only winging it :)

    ****ing hitboxes.

(I don't recall exactly when hitboxes became an arcade & retro meme, but somewhere along the line they did)

It was my fault. Can't remember what beers it was but I think I was drunk and playing really **** at a game and was using the crappy hitboxes excuse :)

    Thank you!!!

This is exactly why I am not a fan of more modern Shmups. That feeling of 'wow, I'm a master at this after just two goes!' doesn't sit right. They are designed to make you look and feel better at the genre than you really are.

Saying that, some parts later in games and the insane modes do require a lot of skill, but I'd still be more impressed with someone being able to 1cc a more traditional shmup like Raiden or R Type.

Excellent stuff sir. Don't forget you'll need to rotate the monitor and you also need -5v on the jamma edge to get audio (only the first Raiden needs this). If your cab doesn't provide the -5v then you'll need a "Negatron -5v pass though adapter" to place between your Jamma harness and the board - FrancoB over on AO makes them, link.

Here's a pic of it in action with my Raiden board:

Great little yolk that! I'll have to pick one up sometime.

Will also have to pick up a Raiden board to go with it!

Remember when I missed that buy it now Raiden PCB on ebay for about 35-40 euro Andrew76? It was for sale one minute and then it was instantly gone. Gutted so I was!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

Thanks Andrew, knew about the screen rotation alright but not the -5v on the jamma connector.
Will need to look up cab schematics to see if it has -5v. My guess is that it doesn't.

    More expense, groan.

Interesting. I dropped Franco a mail and he said he didn't think that raiden PCB needed - 5v! Obviously you have a different experience!

Think he said the same thing to me. But my ears and owners manual said otherwise. There's a pdf of the service manual half way down this Klov page, page 3 shows the jamma requirements with a note underneath saying you especially need -5v.

Sure the safest thing to do is wait until you get sorted with a cab, then see if it's needed or not. Only way to be sure. :)

Officially it's that 8meg Next Gen BB.

    Right now it's:

Actually that's the highest I've ever seen the download speed, everyone in the estate must've fcuked off for the day. Normally it's 4.3Mbps down, 0.3 up.

My speeds are lower than normal for the last while as the UPC beta program is suspended until later this year.
    But I'm still doing ok:
