Can anybody please recommend an amino acid tablet/chewable product that would equate to taking whey protein shakes? ie provide a full spectrum of the same amino acids and in sufficient quantities. My stomach just can not handle the shakes anymore.

    No never take AA tabs.

I use AA powder with creatine and l-glutamine intra-workouts.

What is the issue with protein shakes for you atm?

What brand(s) have you been using?

Why do you recommend not using them?

I'm using ON gold standard vanilla why and vanilla casein. They just make me feel nauseous and tend to induce vomiting, really killing my appetite and ability to eat.

Well the tablets will be very expensive - even more so that your ON Whey.

Mostly AA tablets will not be full spectrum - more likely to be BCAA or if very luck EAA.

Then there is the issue of quantity you could be taking 100g of whey protein per day and this could equate to 80 x 1000mg tablets as an example.

Cheapest I have seen BCAA tablets was about £70 for 1000x1000mg tabs.

Your sides are pretty serious - how are you mixing the shakes - milk/water?

Yikes, impractical and expensive... Mixed it with milk all along until about three weeks ago I switched to water to try to counteract it but no luck.

Apart from the brief unpleasantness and taste, is there any disadvantage to just scoffing the powder say half a scoop at a time and rinsing it down with a gulp of water? Would that impair absorption? I've had to resort to it a few times, but it makes the protein clump in the mouth so I wonder if it's too densely packed in my GIT to be properly digested.

No but it will not be sustainable long term - give it a go - but I would have water in my mouth and then the powder rather than the other way around.

Kind of like don't chew the sweet and then suck the hose to get the petrol out of the car! :D

How much liquid were you using with your shakes?

Any issues with milk on it's own?

You're right actually I've tried both and don't know why I typed the above but your way works much better! 300/350ml per scoop depending on what I thought I could handle. Nope, milk on it's own is ok except after I've taken a shake ( or thrown one up:( ) but that's the case with nearly all food and liquid.

    It's quite frustrating:confused:

You could try blending the powder into a smoothie.

I use a splash of orange juice & milk and add natural yogurt, peanut butter, a banana OR mango OR half cup of oats with 2 scoops of whey.

It tastes lovely & you cannot taste or smell the whey at all.

Duff - am I reading this correctly - 'nearly all food and liquid' are you saying if you had milk after a meal it would not agree with you?

I was going to suggest adding more liquid but 300ml with a 30g scoop is plenty of liquid to powder ratio.

    I personally use 60 with 300mls.

Another port of call would have been digestive enzymes but these are already in ON whey.

Hard to know what to do really. How many brands have you tried? :)

What I'm saying is that if I consume a protein shake (whether it stays down or not) I will feel nauseous and unable to eat for the whole day, sometimes it even carries over to three days.

So far I've tried ON, Mutant and one other I can't remember the name of (PHD rings a bell?)

Thanks for all your input so far Guvnor, very much appreciate the effort!

Eat a chicken burger after working out and incorporate your protein powder into other foods throughout the day. It's not hard to find whey protein recipes (like these).

You could try making protein bars like these.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055992322

I make them all the time. I usually add more nuts and mix in some trail mix or something for some extra taste. This particular recipe gives quite sticky bars so I usually dust them in coconut.

All good brands - all of them were just whey blends?
Mutant might be more than one protein source?

Do you find the shakes too sweet, sickly in taste terms?

    Sensitivity to other foods?

All just straight up whey yeah. It's hard to pinpoint whether it's the taste or texture, but thinking about either makes me feel equally ill... It's both really.

Sensitive to almost all foods/liquids if I've attempted to consume whey (seriously, even water afterwards could make me puke!), that could last for days afterwards. Otherwise no major problems except that anything that reminds me of the taste or texture can set me off sometimes...

Thanks to the above for the protein bar ideas, gonna give them a try this week:)

I don't notice a scoop of whey if I throw it in a bowl of oats, water and sultanas.

A few teaspoons of 100% cocoa powder kills the taste if I want to drink it.
