Sat out for a stag from just after 5 o'clock. Only seen a doe with a calf but going by the number and varying sizes of hoofprint there must be a few likely lads about. Out again an hour and a half before last light. May try my hamd at a few pigeons this afternoon.

Out early and shot some and left the rest for another day.
Ran the setters on the heather after dinner and the dogs found a few nice clutches. Great to see birds and breathe in the mountain air.

I feel for ya mate, hindsight is a great thing, would have been nice if you were out for the first to clear off any unwanted visitors. You should be out for the next few days and weekends to clear the tossers off it.

Got up to my alarm this morning at 8am and off I went all excited to my place of work. After finishing work at 5 o clock I made it home as fast as I could to grab my gear and get prepared.

Made it to the football match in plenty time and played out a draw in pretty ****ty conditions! Just in the door now and have tomorrow off.

But collage friends staying the night so cant get out in the morning with them hear! Have a match at 2 so I'll head for the hills after that!

Bet yer 1st days were more exciting than that! :(

Not a bad evening. Feed a pond & they will come!!
Were like fighter jets but the ducks are still young. Got what we wanted & left with em still dropping in for the next day. This dry spell coming won't help the pond though!

Was like a warzone not far from us with all the shots.

Went out to the river this morning at about half five shot five mallard the springer made some great retreves in the fast water then we went out to the lake for an evening flight shot one mallard and a tuffted so seven all together not a bad start to the season

Was out at 4 o'clock and didn't see a duck or fire a shot. Saw 4 massive bucks of a heard heading back into swap the shotguns for rifles. They wont be touched till after the rut. Only one of them.

Saw a rake of doe's and fawns that stood looking at us like fools with no intentions of moving even when they were told to feck off. No prickets or stags though.

Decided to test a caller when it got too dark. Spotted this lad and he ran from the lamp at about 150 yards. Turn off the lamp and started calling and he re-appeared closer each time the lamp was turned on. 100gr .243 to the front of his chest left no exit wound but just a bundle of jelly.
collected the tail and called it a night.

I know its early days but do ye reckon dawn or dusk is showing more activity for stalking? I flipped a coin friday night and the coin decided I should go for a duck first :) I was up at 6 & did 3 handy ponds and walked the local river for about 2hrs. All I saw was 1 mallard & I would have needed a torpedo to hit him, lifted about 120yards in front of me.

Headed out to my permission in the afternoon. I called into 2 lads I know living close by to it & they said it was like someone had diverted traffic up there from a main road that morning, nothing but vans & jeep's up and down the road with one or two fella's in each one. When I got to my spot here was clear evidence people had been in in the morning, there was fresh tracks driving up the passage and even fresh tea bags on the ground where they had parked.

I was up there for 4 hrs and all I watched was two doe's grazing for over an hour of it. Another bad start!! :(

Up at 03.45, on the road at 04.20 and inplace at 05.40. Sat up and watched the world waken around me. Not sound nor sight. Walked the permission and found plenty of fresh trails, be heading back in the pm.
    Persistence and patience ............

One skin on & one without. Tea sorted for later. Just how exactly to cook them is the next dilemma. Hmm... Open to suggestions & ideas?

EP, get some generic plum sauce and brush on as a glaze, pop in the oven on very high and when the skin's crackly it should still be rare through. I just have them with bread then mostly, or potato gratin if I'm arsed. Couldn't get simpler, but oh so good.

On the way back from your shoot collect a handfull of blackberries thats knocking around. Mash with teaspoon of vinegar pinch of salt and sugar. Rub fine salt into skin. Cook the duck with skin down in a hot oven 20mins. Remove from oven and cover with tin foil and rest for 10 mins. Heat some oil / butter in the pan slice skinned duck thinly and cook quckly. Warm black berry compote and devour with meat.
By the way don't waste the legs confit them in olive oil, bad for waist but oh so good.

It is a circa 1926 A.H. Fox with ejectors and 30" barrels. I had the barrels re-blacked about ten years ago.
My great uncle Brendan was a PP in the state of Iowa and he loved to shoot & fish. When he retired he moved back to Tipp. I inherited his golf clubs, guns and bamboo rods from my father.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭German pointer

No shot for me, I saw 10 deer (could have took home 4 of them if season was different) and could not shoot the only stag I saw as it was not a safe shot to take.:mad:
But on the bright side I got a new peremission close to one I already have, All it took was to say hello to a farmer on the road. :D He was even nice enough to point out a few runs they use to cross his land:D:D
