Changing up training.

    Afternoon all,

I have been thinking recently of changing up my training routine lately, I am finding weight training alone rather laborious and boring so was thinking of taking up a sport of some sorts, particularly MMA, I tried my hand at it a few years ago when I was finishing up school and really enjoyed it, also saw some incredible results in my physique while doing it as well.

My main question or query is 2 fold, does anyone else here get bored of weight training/going to the gym?

And in relation to MMA, do you think that it is as effective as weight training for fat loss etc and muscle gain?

This post might be a bit all over the place, its a bit hard to word.

    Thanks anyway.

It is 100% ineffective for muscle gain. The fat loss component will be dictated by your nutrition!

Never but I'm a bit of a freak and obsessive when it comes to working out. But most people do, vary your training, find a training partner, set goals etc.

Depend on how the club trains, it varies so much between clubs.

    Cheers lads.

Just trying to change things up to keep me active, I am more in fear of slipping into old habits more than anything.

Would like to give MMA a go again, I suppose fat lose and weight gain is more so the diet than the training, DOH!

Yep, I often do if I just stick to weight training. I find if I mix things up a bit it keeps me going and I enjoy the whole thing more... what kinda classes does your gym have? I've been lifting weights on and off for 5 years or so but I tried spinning classes this year for the first time and I find them very effective. Great change of pace, dropped a lot of weight and really gets the blood pumping for a weights session afterward.

Other than that, mix it up where you can - play footy? 5 a side? TRX? Cycling? Tennis? Anything!

I do play football now, sometimes twice a week. I tried a TRX/Kettlebell class last week, really enjoyed it, I do think that I just need a kick up the arse and try different things.

I do have a goo on me to have a go at MMA again, I have boxed for a good few years and fought last year, really loved it.

Just still have the mind set of a weightlifter and am worried about the whole loosing muscle mass etc, but I could end up with a better physique by mixing up the training.

    Hi.

If you get bored with weight lifting there's no point in going on, take a break and try something else, every sport is fine. MMA is quite complete workout, don't expect to build muscle, though, if you are already at a high fitness level. To maintain variety kettlebells are great fat burning training tools, just mix up both.

I did MMA for two years.

Found it very good for burning fat, although obviously diet is massive in this too. You cant out train a bad diet. But as far as workouts go it was excellent.

The workouts are very very hard though, point of puking almost every session!

Theres a MASSIVE variety in what you can do in sessions so in that regard it will keep you interested. Also, if you have an experienced / good trainer, they can give you some very good nutritional advice.
