Two new metal gear games have been announced the first is Metal Gear: Social Ops for Android and IOS so should be woeful:

The next is far more interesting, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zero. A demo was shown to attendees but no footage or photos have been released to the public but it's running on the new Fox engine and seems to be an open world. Seems they are taking the franchise is a brand new direction by going open world, something I embrace since let's face it, MGS4 was a bit ****:

    http://www.siliconera.com/2012/08/30/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-is-the-next-major-metal-gear-game/

when they say open world how open i like to know ?

do they me mean the scale will be like what metal gear solid 3 ?

i would very much like this idea.

Ign have posted saying the game was running on a not so powerful pc specs so i am very interested to seeing how the new fox engine would look like.

Mgs4 had its faults though i didn't see them till my 3rd play through of the story

i am all for metal gear going a new direction as long the game doesn't lose its identity

There also appears to be a tie-in movie in the works.

It really, really isn't. I've been replaying it lately and it's so well made. The cutscenes are way too long, but it's an excellent game.

Back on topic, it seems that Big Boss is going to star in Ground Zero. I wonder where they'll take his story next? I'm pretty excited anyway!

All I know was that I didn't enjoy it at all and it felt like a massive step back from MGS3. Even the small bits of gameplay that were fun evaporate once you hit Act 4.

Can't say I agree. Going back to the previous ones with the HD collection I have to say I think it's the best one. At the same time I was kind of glad that the series had come to a tidy (by MGS standards) finish so I'm not thrilled that they've decided to go back to drag it out some more.

MGS 4 was the weakest game in the main series in terms of gameplay and it was handicapped but having to continue on the story from MGS 2.

    Very dissappointed with it.

i wouldn't say its well made, far from it

the script for the game was terrible , the bosses were just rehashes of previous boss fights that did not live up to metal gear standard . only one that felt alright was when fighting crying wolf

Metal gear solid 4 was made to be the end of the series , that is what kojima set out to do , problem was not the length of the cutscenes it was the story he was trying to tell . He had too many characters he needed to tie lose ends with , he wanted to wrap everything up so he could move on doing movies and other projects which bit him in the ass.

i highly doubt kojima original plan was too make snake die of old age only to be easily be giving Foxdie cough cough * Aids by naomi knowing well what went down at shadow mosses.

highest point in the game was revisiting shadow mosses only to be ruined having to fight off a billion robots with hands.

    ending battle was lame

if kojima went into making the game in the right mindset then it could of being a masterpiece but he instead went in wanting to stop making metal gear games cause throughout most of the development of mgs4 he wanted to be making movies.

If you have any questions about the plot in the MGS4 then the answer is always nanomachines did it.

If this game is focusing on Big Boss, I can't see how it will impact the ending in MGS4.

I hope Ground Zero(es?) is a continuation of the Outer Heaven story started in Peace Walker. Maybe BB and his men take part in a number of missions before the first Metal Gear story takes place. Could be interesting.

    Sounds like conjecture to me...

Anyway, it sounds like this topic has gone a little bit off the rails. In an effort to get back on track...

I assume this will be more like the traditional MGS (maybe with an open world), so will Big Boss be going solo again? It's hard to imagine a situation where he'd be out of his leadership role.

It is semi-confirmed its Big Boss (apparently can just abouit make out the Militaires Sans Frontiers logo on sleeve)

I assume (hope) it will have to do with the events post PW

    and
show how Snake and Miller went on to use MSF (upo and running by the end of the game

I hope its the MGS game where we finally get to see Big Boss break bad.

"Stealth" games are at their best when it's set-pieces with tightly orchestrated AI within a prescribed area. Open World Stealth sounds bogey. I'd like it to work but I have my reservations (about sandbox games in general if I'm being honest).

And constant coughing of snake. At first I was worried about him as a character, but after few hours in it just got old and annoying. Every cutscene starts with snake coughing out a part of his lung. Maybe that's why cutscenes are so long?

Raiden was a proper tool in there too... I don't want to spoil for someone who haven't played it yet, but what he did there was just fecking stupid. ( and I did not even mind him in mgs2, I was not one of those people who were bitching about him being main character )

I am playing mgs snake eater on ps vita, and oh boy how better that ge is then mgs4. Even with outdated controls and ps vita controls on top of that, snake water is 100% better then mgs4 drama queen compilation

Act 1 of MGS4 was great. It was stealth heavy and on more than one occasion there'd be a point where paths would branch off and you could choose your way through. That was the direction the series was going in in MGS3, and Act 1 of MGS4 pretty much perfected it. The stealth controls were perfect as well.

Act 2 was a lot more linear. It still had great moments and Laughing Octopus was a great boss.

Act 3 had a crap 'stalking' mission at the start and then a ton of cutscenes, an on-rails section and a boss. There was no real stealth.

Act 4 was just a load of nostalgic fanwank. Sure, seeing Shadow Moses re-rendered on current gen technology was amazing, but the actual gameplay in that section wasn't. Other than a couple of Gekkos you were pretty much just machine-gunning weird little robot balls. The MG-Ray v Rex fight was just fan-service as well, just smash a load of buttons and you'll get by just fine.

Act 5 had one stealth section at the very start and then a string of ****ty boss sections and QTEs. Act 1 was the only truly great part of MGS4, so I definitely agree with retrogamer that it was a disappointment. If they struck a more even balance with stealth and action it would have been a great game. Would have been nice if the TPS shooting was tighter as well.

By all accounts, Kojima's original vision for MGS4's ending involved Otacon and Snake being executed for their war crimes. Would have been better imo.

How can I give examples? Act 1 had a few dull but serviable stealth sections, the only standout being the sniper part. Act 2 was a lot better because it had three areas where multiple approaches to getting through the area were possible and it felt like classic metal gear. It still ruined it with an on the rails section, the awful market scene and a terrible boss fight. Act 3 had a stalking section that was a least different but ended up in an awful on rails section and awful boss. Act 4 was fan **** as said and sneaking past robots wasn't much fun and that continued into Act 5. As for the boss fights, they were all uniformly terrible, the sniper one being the best of a bad bunch but still being a bit crap.

Search any websites news and you'll see Kojima saying how the last MGS he made is definitely the last one he will ever make. As for him making a movie, please god no, his stories and dialogue are terrible and he fights with his localisers when they try to make it make sense. He's a much better game designer than he gives himself credit for. I wish he'd do more interesting projects, I loved the ZoE and Boktai games.

I've not played it but by all accounts he took a different route with PW and it was great.

I hope they make the fried egg bits playable this time, they were epic moments in gaming history. I guess the ps3 just couldn't render them in real time gameplay so they had to be restricted to cut scenes.

ps4 should have the power to handle them so fingers crossed.

Personally konami should let kojima drop metal gear for while and let the man make the silent hill games

Kojima wants to do it and as retr0 pointed out as a designer is one of the best in the industry

TBH MGS, MGS3 and MGS:PW prove he can make fantastic MG games and seeing as I prefer them over the SH games, I hope he doesn't!

Regarding MG:GZ, I have seen the term 'game with no game over' being mentioned. Could this refer to multiple or interchangeable characters or some sort of MMO-like experience?

Playing Silent Hill is like watching a David Lynch movie. You like it more when it's over, the actual watching/playing isn't that enjoyable.

I hope to god he sits down and replays MGS3 before releasing this new game! Focus more on the action and less on the gibberish that made up a lot of mgs2 and 4. I'd look forward to a new big boss game, portable ops and peace walker just didn't cut it for me. I still haven't finished peace walker :o

    Yeah it is
they mention the nuclear inspection which could be the nuke MSF recovers at the end of Peace Walker
    .

Also...I WANTS!!! Cant be running on a PS3 though, even though they said it was hardware similar. But given how amazing MGS4 looked 4 or so years ago its not off the cards....

As much as I hate linking to IGN, they do have a longer version that actually gives you an extra minute or two of gameplay after all the nonsense story stuff ;)

    http://ie.ign.com/videos/2012/09/01/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-extended-14-minute-demo

Calling a helicopter into the middle of an enemy base - stealthy :P

Also it seems mandatory now that all trailers have to create an Inception-esque soundtrack.

Very nice trailer even though I lost interest in MGS after the 4th one.

Anyone else think that little boy is a Big Boss clone?

The Gaming Liberty facebook page (big fans of Metal Gear) were updating their page with vids and pics as they went live last night. Look who left a comment:
David Thomas i wonder if we'll hear from my old character -the Sorrow...

How class is it to have a voice actor leave a comment on a Irish FB page!

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

I'd wager the boy in the video is Chico. Dialogue suggests it.

Wonder who the villian is? Its hardly Volgin?

Ah Jesus, now I'm excited! Unsurprisingly with a MGS game the graphics look fantastic on it.

If the game play stays in line with what was on show in that clip I'll be delighted.

Worst thing though is that we're unlikely to see it hit stores until late 2014 at the earliest I would imagine.

Got back into it yesterday and I just cannot get past the torture part. How can pushing one button be so hard! Flung my joypad against the wall in frustration. Think it's broken.

I wonder should they have gone for a fresh start in the series.

For me I had MGS 1 2 and 3 from the ps1 to the ps2 but then went to xbox and didn't play MGS4. Even by MGS3 the story / back story felt very convoluted and difficult to follow. At this stage with missing MGS4 and without going back to play the others I'd probably totally out of place in ground zero and perhaps others feel the same, its a daunting barrier for entry even for someone who used to play the series let alone any new comers.

    Looks stunning though.

On a side note after seeing the demo I have massive reservations that this will run on current gen. Some of those water and lighting effects IMO could only be pulled off a by a high end PC running direct x 11. I wonder if its a lot of smoke and mirrors.
It might just be me being paranoid but I wouldnt be surprised at all to find out the likes of Sony and MS are saying to devs "sure, you can show your games but just say its for current gen for now" when in fact they are for next gen. We know the dev time for next gen will be longer and that devs currently have the kits in house for the next gen.
We also know that they most certainly will want to drum up interest as early as possible to ensure no one is left unaware of the games existence so shareholders can rest easy.
Finally it seems plausible that we will see the usual 180 from MS and Sony where they come out at e3 next year and basically say forget about kinect and move and look how we are back to the hardcore with titles like MGS ground zero, watch dogs, remember me and star wars 1313.

Wonder who that burned guy is?

Your guess is as good as mine, several theories include:

    The fury
    Psycho mantis
    Volgin
    Solidus Snake

Or it could just be a new character
