Your Unpopular Rock & Metal Opinions

There have been a few instances of threads like this on other music forums so here is one for the Rock & Metal audience.

Off the top of my head:
    • With a few exceptions I prefer listening to female vocalists.
    • I am happy that I can't differentiate between most metal sub-genres. I have no real idea what the differences are between metalcore, melodic metal, post-metal, deathcore etc.
    • I freely admit that I like Nu Metal. I think that a lot of people equate Nu Metal with Fred Durst. Their loss.

Me either with the exception of 1:39 into this song :).

In terms of other popular bands that I don't like I'd add Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Nine Inch Nails and Tool.

I think Dave Mustaine is an astute political thinker and all round good guy.

No, I can't keep a straight face while typing that.

But I do genuinely think that Linkin Park blew QOTSA off the stage at the RDS in 2008. And I hate myself for that :)

I absolutely can't stand Metallica. They'd be my least favourite band of any genre anywhere in the whole universe :p

This! Except you know what, I actually like a bit of Limp Bizkit.

I like The Darkness, they fckin' rip it up. Amazing band.

    I like The Murderdolls!

I think Iron Maiden's Piece Of Mind is one of their worst albums!

I think the worst black metal ever came from Norway!

Don't get me wrong, I quite like Limp Bizkit too. Parts of Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish are brilliant. The media portrayal of Fred Durst is that he's a bit of a prat and for whatever reason he ended up as a bit of a figurehead and so was used as a metaphorical stick to beat the nu metal wave.

In summary: Limp Bizkit = good, Fred Durst = bad :).

I really don't like Slayer, Mastodon, Pantera, Machine Head or thrash metal in general (with a few exceptions).

I think Death Magnetic is Metallica's best album.

Production quality is paramount for me, and I often find "classic" metal albums from before the late nineties painful to listen to because of the tinny, washed-out production.

In Flames are my favourite band, and I actually think the newer half of their catalogue trumps the older half (but not by much).

Similarly, with Korn I think they have more or less gotten progressively better with each album, and I find their first two (Korn and Life is Peachy) to be pretty awful records with only a handful of good songs between them.

I think metal and dubstep/trance/electro house mix incredibly well.

That's all I can think of for now!

I don't understand why people think metal doesn't mix with electronic when you have artists like Rob Zombie, Ministry, NIN....

I like KoRns dub step album. In fact I love it.

I thought Chase & Status and Prodigy were great headliners for Download. All the metalheads ****ed off to see Slash so it was a great atmosphere and I got right up to the stage. Their loss.

I don't like most of Led Zeppelin's stuff.

I don't like Rush. At all. Sounds like space.

I think Phil Collins is a musical genius.

@ Lord Chessington; I also love the Murderdolls :D

Metallica suck assballs and James Hetfiled is a redneck piece of talentless shoit!!

I agree with all of the above. Well, except for In Flames being my favourite band although they're definitely in the top ten.

It's early on in the thread but I think these two have to be front-runners for the most unpopular opinion so far:

I think Guns n Roses are not deserving a fracture of popularity they achieved. Hate their songs, their genre should be called "pretensional rock".

Slash isnt that great of guitarist, and Axel Rose is total jerk that should be singing in a boysband.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭Hyperbullet

-John Bush is far superior vocalist than Joey Belladonna and Anthrax should get him back.

-Rush are just awful, and I don't get Dream Theatre.

-Korn should have stopped making music 10 years ago.

-I have no idea why there have to be so many sub-genres in metal these days. Metal is metal pretty much. So f*ck off with your metalcore and post-metal.

Not exactly, Metallicas first four albums are masterpieces, early Megadeth stuff is great but metallica just aren't good anymore, mustaine is losing his voice and slayer are just too consistent, Anthrax are still as good as they were 30 years ago :D

Yeah I never got why people like them so much. I actually went out and bought that number of the beast album and while the recording quality/production is way ahead of its time, the songs are rubbish. Actually, you know the way AC/DC have one song they've played for 40 something years? Well Iron Maiden are the same except their song is sh1tter. If anyone plays guitar try this, play these chords A-G-F-G-A, that or a variation on that structure is every Iron Maiden song in existence and it's the sh1tty 80s chord progression that was so popular back then but which is basically neither happy nor sad, expressing no particular emotion other than neutrality and good music, in my opinion, should express something, not modality! But something that moves, unless it's techno in which case sounding robotic is ok.

Also, Megadeth are ass, just pure bore rock like Iron Maiden.

Number of the Beast is the worst Iron Maiden album I've listened to, which is out of about 7 of them.

The only thrash metal band that has interested me ever is Metallica. Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer have one or two songs that I might listen to but I found any album quite boring.

Some of the best music has come out since 2000.

I think the categorization of metal into many subgenres is a good thing and extremely helpful in finding new bands.

Cynic's show in Dublin was the only metal gig I've been to which I can describe as being in anyway at a reasonable volume level. I know it's probably not unpopular on here but this whole "Metal needs to be loud!" thing is ridiculous.

It's their loss because if someone's going to dismiss nu metal because they don't like Fred Durst then they are missing out on a lot of top quality music.

I can't stand ANY of the NWOBHM bands
    Led Zeppelin are boring
I also think that you don't need any AC/DC album as, when you listen to 1 song, you've served yourself their whole discography with their monotonous 4/4 beat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭nyarlothothep

Apart from having similar chords and a bluesy melody they're not really the same song. Every Inch of You (which incidentally has exquisite guitar tones) is a lot more glam, in fact it reminds me more of Tie Your Mother Down by Queen or similar bombastic swaggering tunes from the glam era. It's not a direct lift, certainly not in the sense of Dazed and Confused by Led Zep or Dani Callifornia by RHCP.

The majority of women's involvement in metal comes across as tokenism at best and embarrassing crap at worst. It won't be remembered.

The first 3 Dickinson Iron Maiden albums are rather patchy and not anywhere as good as the first 2 Di'anno albums.

Most of what Cradle of Filth did in the 90s was excellent.

The genre as a whole has been on a creative decline since the 90s and has very little new left to offer us, save some individiual bands here and there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,412 ✭✭✭✭endacl

    I dislike basalt. Also aluminium.

Music-wise though, its make-up. All the way from early Alice Cooper and Kiss, to daft Scandinavian corpse paint. It just looks daft. Stop.

    Immediately.

Even though I don't agree with the 'tokenism' remark, the Great Kat is one fine example of cringesome cringeworthiness. On the other hand, we've had decades now of Jo Bench ripping it up on bass with Bolt Thrower. Tokenism? I think not...

I hereby admit having a crush on Sarah Jezebel Deva...but wait...'unpopular'...did she ever do a gig in Dublin? Or did I miss it, because I was in work, as per usual? :(

    Evanescence
    Diablo Swing Orchestra
    Darkmoor
    Within Tempation
    Xandria
    My Ruin

    etc

Bear in mind this is the "Unpopular Opinions" thread so no need to get the knives out, and I absolutely believe these bands will be a footnote at best when it comes to writing the history of the genre.

I think all this was done to death in another thread anyway.

Trust me, I started the thread so I know what it is :). I wasn't getting the knives out at all, no need to be so sensitive. I was just curious what or who you were going to come up with. For the record I'd be of the opinion that Evanescence's early stuff up to and including Fallen is brilliant and well worth checking out. Everything after that is more or less forgettable sadly.
Diablo Swing Orchestra never appealed to me for some reason.
Darkmoor I've never heard of :o
Within Temptation possess a fantastic female singer. Unfortunately as good as her voice is, it's the same problem as Xandria in that a lot of the band's output is a bit dull and the excellent vocals can't save them.
Xandria are also a bit hit and miss. Out of their four albums there's about one album's worth of good songs :).
My Ruin I'm not too gone on either.

So 3 years before I came to Ireland?

I saw her with Therion in 1998, was talking to her after the gig, the only thing, I could say was...'may I get you a drink?' She smiled, I blushed and started stuttering like I don't know what :o

If ye're in the market for some decent female-fronted metal bands, ye could do a lot worse than Aghora or Madder Mortem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Dark Artist

I'm of the unpopular opinion that Evanescence in particular are scoffed at more than they deserve. Most of their stuff including The Open Door is fairly solid in my opinion, and pretty out there as far as mainstream rock music goes. Their influence goes unrecognized despite the fact that they are to thank for the huge surge in popularity of female-fronted bands over the last decade, even more reputable ones such as Nightwish.

Are you asking because you genuinely want to know or because regardless of what bands or albums I list you're just going to dismiss them?
