Your liver is involved in the process of removing waste from your whole body. It doesn't need to be cleansed itself.

If your doctor has identified problems with your liver, that's a different matter, and something that you need to discuss with them - not ask advice about online!

Nobody identified any problem ...I just heard it can be good to do once or twice a year.weather it actually works or not I don't know!but no harm in trying.

  • try not to ingest any poisons.

    That's about it.

If you want to support your liver, stay fit, steer clear of alcohol and avoid anything that might cause hepatitis. You don't need to cleanse it, just look after it.

I would suggest some form of fasting or calorie restriction (centred around optimum nutrition, not mere periodic starvation).

There is some good evidence for the hepatic benefits of Milk Thistle, AFAIK, though not all forms are equally good.

Avoid alcohol, and take plenty of healthy exercise.

When I start to feel a big sluggish I usually do a 7 day veggie and juice diet. It always sorts me out, usually shifts around 3kg of weight too. Good place to start.

Taking a break from booze, caffeine, meat, smoking is always a good idea.

thanks guys for the responses.i am taking a break from alcohol at the mo,also been on the weight watcher diet throughout the summer and good exercise approx 3 to 4 times a week in the gym....will see about the milk thistle?where would i get that?

You can get a milk thistle tincture in any health food shop...but they also grow as weeds in most gardens and you can make a tea out of them...it tastes horrid.

I did Dr Sandra Cabot's liver cleanse (and incidentally was lambasted for it on here, but that's another story) and while it is a bit extreme it does the job. You can have a look at her website http://www.livercare.com.au/ but the basic jist is give up dairy, meat (except lean free range chicken), tea, coffee, booze, refined sugar, and start drinking loads of water with apple cider vinegar, and carrot, celery and parsely juice. The book has lots of recipes in it too.

You lose weight when you eat basically no calories. Once you start eating normally again it's almost certainly coming back on.

I would have to recommend cranberry juice, even watered down crap from Dunnes will give instant relief from sluggishness/bloating etc as it detoxes your body and liver of course, which is what its recommended for.

Obviously a purer source will cost a lot more ( that would be up to you ), their are even some 2-3day diets of the juice with no other food at all... personally I wouldn't recommend that. What I would suggest is a glass at each meal time for a few days and see how you feel and take it from there.

Only if you overcompensate and add the calories that you depleted during the fast to what you normally eat.

I tend to go with I.F. myself but I know people who have acheived fantastic, long-term results with these types of fasts. Basically, it's giving your digestive system a break from food, allowing your body to concentrate on other areas which may need repairing.

    That's the theory anyway!

 Ozone can cause serious lung damage when inhaled! Sacraficing lungs for the liver.

Yes, but that's normally exactly what happens becaue the typical person that "detoxes" is the same one that eats massive quantities of absolute crap and things that the "toxification" is the problem and not their portion control and food choices.

So they "detox", lose weight and then go back to normal eating patterns and regain it all again. If detoxing "worked" you'd only need to do it 1x per year. I know people that seem to "detox" or some other bull**** monthly to stay "healthy".

utter rubbish of course. Cranberries are so bitter and sour that unless they are saturated with sugar they are vile and verging on inedible - 10% juice 90% sucrose / dextrose / fructose?

The notion of liver cleansing is nonsense as well as pointed out earlier in the thread. Unless there is a medical reason to assist the liver, (fatty liver disease etc) a regular balanced diet is all that's needed to keep the liver functioning properly. An amazing organ, it can actually heal itself from the abuses of over-indulgence in alcohol and other harmful substances.

    Source/evidence?

By the way, with regard to calorie restriction, which I mentioned earlier IIRC, here's some very recent evidence against such an approach.

Same to you, you first as you introduced it.

I never commented one way or another on "calorie restriction" so although I appreciate the link, it's not of any real interest to me.

Here's a link to a peer-reviewed paper on the hepatic effects of Milk Thistle, which I linked to earlier.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3098397/pdf/WJG-17-2288.pdf

    Here's a paper on P450/GST enzyme induction:

    http://toxicology.usu.edu/endnote/Chemoprevention-By-Enzyme-Induction-Conney-2003.pdf

    And another:

    http://toxicology.usu.edu/endnote/Induction-of-MRNA-encoding-enzymes.pdf

Cytochrome P450 and Glutathione S-Transferase are liver 'detox' enzymes and therefore inducing them could be called a "liver cleanse" I would submit.

    Your turn. :)

Exactly. It's funny how people with a decent diet never feel the need to "detox".

There is something in what you say.

I knew a couple once who were keen detoxers. They were also fierce smokers and boozers, and seemed to relish swinging from one extreme to the other.

On the other hand, Brian Dunning is a legend (according to himself, anyway). :)
