"Slagging: often this is disguised as 'humour', 'it's only a bit of craic' etc... It has evolved, in what is an emotionally repressive society, as a way of ensuring people don't take on ‘airs and graces’ i.e. don’t get too confident or boastful but know their place in society and remain there."

Where do you draw the line between slagging and bullying?

Depends on how the person takes it. It's usually clear by their facial expression whether they see it as banter or bullying.

Slagging is Abuse and it is accepted here in Ireland .Anger and jealousy have many disguises and slaggin' is one of them but it does not exist everywhere and would'nt be allowed in other places .I've worked in places where there was none at all .And it should'nt exist . Tolerance is a disease here .
It is difficult to see the line between banter and trying to humiliate sometimes .

Slagging is way of testing if someone has a sense of humour, doesn't take themselves too seriously. It's a way of bonding. You know you've gotten in with a group of people when they start slagging you. It's not just an Irish thing either, I've seen it in other cultures (though some really don't appreciate it), but we appear to be particularly good at it.

People who don't like slagging are usually emotionally insecure, humourless, whingey twats

Of course it is but sure we all knew that :p
I hate that word banter and those idiots that say 'the bants' wrecks me head!
Slagging is fine between friends but with strangers it's a bit weird and off-putting.

This is a quite valid discussion, it's a pity it's on AH where any serious conversation will be shot down by the same, tired crowd, awash with cynisicm and a wilful failure to comprehend consequences of something like bullying...

And perhaps after years of relentless slagging/pyschological bullying, how else would they appear to you?

As someone who was briefly bullied as a small child, I can tell the difference!

Banter/slagging is usually when everyone does it to everyone else, clearly in jest and not just to one person all the time with some poisonous words thrown in for good measure.

Seriously, people need this explained to them?

Is this yet another inferiority complex, run down Ireland thread? In a covert kinda way?

Tis a young person thing :p Look on any of the off topic threads on C&H and you'll see it numerous times. Nothing against C&H, I've just seen it there.

A really cool thing to combat slagging that's from a 'bad place' (I don't mean harmless fun) is an nlp technique called the swish pattern. Just google it. I've done it several times now and the result is, you hear the slagging, but don't emotionally react to it. It's hard to explain, it's the same effect as someone saying, 'hello, how are you?', you don't react to it emotionally. Derren Brown type stuff.
However I have noticed it makes people uncomfortable sometimes when they say something intentionally hurtful but you don't react to it like you're meant to. That I find really funny, in fact it's the ultimate revenge. No reaction :-)

I just put you on ignore. If you reply to this I won't see it.

    Am I doing it right?

There is a difference between slagging and bullying. Bullying is meant to hurt people, slagging is meant to make people laugh. It can be difficult to tell the two apart.

I'll slag and be slagged, but there are some people I won't do it to. A really good friend of mine can't tell the difference. It's like bonding. You just have to be careful who you do it with.

I think as long as someone is not socially clueless or completely hyper sensitive they'd know the difference.

First they came for the socialists...
