1km run time for a woman

    Hey guys, I was just wondering what you would think a good 1km run time should be for a woman. Thanks!

    More info needed, otherwise it's a vague question..... Age, running experience, fitness level etc. etc. ? Are you training for a specific distance/event?

    Sorry mid twenties and 3 weeks back into training after injury. Just had an evening of fitness testing for the forth coming season and wondering what times i should be aiming for.

    Are you talking about track and field (e.g. running 1,000m on the track), or just going out and running a kilometer?

    Actually, I don't know why I'm asking. The real answer is that all times are relative to the individual, so there's no point asking on a public forum whether a time is good for a particular distance. For example, do we compare your time with someone who is just starting out on a fit4life program, where your time might compare quite favourably, or compare with a female sub-3 marathon runner, where the time doesn't compare quite as well.

    Take a look at this thread, which lists some targets to aim for. When you can start ticking some of them off, you know you are making progress and can start moving towards improving those times. Also, you can compare your current 1k time with some of the targets listed in that thread, using a tool like MacMillan's Pace Calculator. So the answer is that you have a good starting point (4:35) and the key to progress, is improving on that time. Good luck!

    There's no answer to that question either.
    You can run time x now, so you should aim for faster time y in your next race, and faster time z in the race after that, and faster time q after that, and...
    It doesn't matter what a 'good time' for anyone else is*. Your improvement is the important thing.


    *until you're trying to win races, qualify for teams, etc

    The other question calfmuscle is whether you are just going out and running 1km as hard as you can, or whether you are specifically aiming for a 1k event?

    If your training consists of going out and running 1km a couple of times a week, then you should probably look at your training regime. Find a more structured training program for bringing up your general running/general fitness (for example HalHigdon's novice 5k program, or a more advanced program (if you are up to it). By the way, based on the times listed in the (Women) 10 round numbers thread, am equivalent 1k time would be somewhere between 3:33 and 3:56 (based on the 1 mile and 800m times).

    Thanks guys, Im only just back training after a fracture last February. The fitness testing was just to see where all the girls on the team are at and we will be retested in 3 weeks time. The testing was for rugby and was done on the pitch so you had to turn every 100m. I assume this would have a slight affect on your time as you need to decelerate and accelerate every 100m.
    I've been jogging a 4 mile local route once a week (about 35 mins) and do two nights interval sessions a week for the past 3 weeks.

    Ahhh... You should have started with that information! In that context, aiming for 3:33 - 3:56 is probably a bit aggressive, particularly with the added disadvantage of the corners. How did you fair against the other team members?

    Sorry i should have explained, i was third. But half the backs weren't there to be fair. That's why im wondering what my time really indicates. I feel my fitness is improving but no where near where it was last year.
