Hi all was wondering if anyone knows if any irish broadcasters will be broadcasting the game? I'd find it very interesting to watch as I've never seen an american football game...

A concert/celebration is on RTE1 Friday evening at 9.30, and the game is live on ESPN America from 2 on Saturday.

It probably won't be the best game to use as your introduction to the sport. While it will be a great spectacle and the atmosphere should be amazing, in all reality it probably will be a bit one sided.

Really looking forward to visiting Dublin for the game. I've only been to Cork and Kerry before.

Anyone know good places to go in Dublin? We're staying in the Westin in the City. I don't want to go to any tourist traps.
My cousins say that I have to go to the Palace Bar which is a 'real pub'? Anyone know about it? Is it near (or in) the city?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

It will be shown on ESPN America, which is available on UPC as far as I know.

If the palace bar is the same as the palace niteclub, I wouldn't recommend it. It is in the city, very accessible.

It's nothing to do with the palace nightclub on camden street.

I think the Palace bar is that old place opposite the new Tesco's in Temple Bar. I think it's part of some hotel now. If you're thinking of the place on Camden Street, you're right - Avoid!

Glad that is cleared up, I am indeed thinking of the palace on camden street. An absolute dive.

its a pity rte are just showing the concert and not the match, they should've bought the rights to broadcast the match instead of the miriam o callaghan concert :L

Is there more American football going on as I saw what looked to be an American team practicing in Trinity today
They looked young and all had tracksuits with Kent on the back before changing

No terrestrial channels broadcasting at all but I think there'll be interviews with some of the players on terrestrial in the next few days!

Should be a bumper weekend in Dublin, the Navy-ND game isn't even the biggest event of the weekend with Mayo-Dublin on Sunday. No tickets for Saturday but I'll be there Sunday. I can only imagine the traffic chaos.

For a lot of folk in the American Football forum this is the biggest event of the weekend. We get you see GAA as a better or bigger sport or you like it better whatever it is to you, you have made that clear on many occasion in here even though this is a American Football forum.

Only meant in terms of attendance. The Mayo-Dublin game will easily top 70,000.

In terms of impact as an event the Navy-ND game is obviously special. It's bringing a huge amount of tourism into the country and the fact it's pretty much forced the 'The Gathering 2013' promotion to begin about six months early tells its own story. If the whole event goes as well as it appears to be we're sure to get more college games in the future and indeed it will be a huge plus in any discussion about a second European NFL game.

Tone down the snideness, though. You're the only one trying to compare the two as sports in this instance. If you don't want to interact with people who are GAA supporters you probably shouldn't be posting on boards.ie.

No snideness just stating the obvious and if you don't like it hey hit that report button its down below. But this is an American Football forum and the GAA has its own forum.

Mentioning there's a big GAA game on at the weekend is very much a part of this discussion. It's going to effect anyone in Dublin this weekend as bars, hotels, public transport and roads in general will be under extra stress. People should be aware and plan accordingly.

The general theme of your posts when other sports are even mentioned is 'THIS IS THE AMERICAN FOOTBALL FORUM!', as if people should ignore how sports interact with each other and discuss american football in an absolute vacuum.

It wont affect many in here as the two games are on serparate days. Most of the traffic here is Irish and most know about both games and how sh1t Dublin is with traffic. But I fail to see how it will affect most.

Its simple if I went into the Soccer or GAA forums and mentioned other sports all the time they would throw me out. All it takes is for one person to mention the other sport and 2 to 3 pages are taken up comparing them or talking about them and it ruins a thread about American football. If I want to discuss the GAA or Soccer I will go there to do so. Besides neither of the two sports interact. They only common ground the GAA have and AF have right now is the use of stadiums.

I heard there'll be a tailgate party before the game. That would be pretty cool (if it was authentic american tailgate style) as never been to one. Anyone know the details of where its on etc??

Upon further investigation, the Notre Dame party is in Temple Bar :-|
Theres one in Ely in grand canal dock as well :-|

But The Rebels team are having one at The Bath pub near Lansdowne, so that might be a bit of craic

I fail to see where I'm discussing 'GAA all the time' or even offering anything approaching an opinion on the game in question. Everything I said was perfectly valid in the context of this weekend's events.

Take it as read plenty of Mayo supporters will be making a weekend of it - I know this for a fact and from experience -, that significant numbers of 'ex-pat' Dubs will be migrating back to the city from the country for the game and that there will still be plenty of Americans milling around town on Sunday.

stay away from temple bar and you should be fine,be weary of pubs around croke park as they might pump up prices for the night that's in it.The george on george's street is a great boozer.

Absolutely sickened I only got back into football a couple of days ago, would of loved to have made this game. I was supposed to get an e-mail about tickets for Wembley when they became available which I never received:mad: So mad about that, Pats used to be (and still are) my favourite team.

What a stupid thing to say. The stupid thing is you come at it as if I dont like the sport which you would be completely wrong. Assuming you think you know best makes you look stupid.

You have mentioned the GAA more than once in the last 6 months in threads were there was no need. And as I said I don't agree with you with it being valid context in this thread. You seem to be the only one concerned about random traffic and the Dublin game being more important.
Take it as read plenty of Mayo supporters will be making a weekend of it - I know this for a fact and from experience -, that significant numbers of 'ex-pat' Dubs will be migrating back to the city from the country for the game and that there will still be plenty of Americans milling around town on Sunday.

So what? You seem to think this thread is being broadcast on tv or as a live update. You are stating the obvious and most passing traffic in here know all of this information already. As for Americans id say there is barely a few reading this thread looking for traffic info and whats on this weekend elsewhere in the city.

I don't see the relevance of your point in bringing GAA into the discussion but even if it is valid in the overall context of the weekend that's in it, it certainly has zero relevance in a thread about the TV coverage of the game which is what this thread is about.

Why don't you talk about how bigger and better Sunday's match will be in the actual thread about the game?

The American Football game is by far the bigger match this weekend in the city. Regardless of attendance. This game is massive outside of Ireland. No one could give two sh1ts about the Gaa outside of Ireland.

While may agree with you a little on the first point the GAA chamionship gets big ould crowds in pubs all around the world (including in America and not just with the irish)

anyway...pity the games not on free to air irish tv. As a result the event will pass most in ireland by.

GAA is insignificant in the US outside of Irish born immigrants and to a much lesser extent 1st and subsequent generations of Irish.
Beyond that demography it is a million miles off the radar screen.

But at the same time ND v Navy is not as huge a game as some promoting this game make it out to be
I'd argue that ND v BC is a bigger rivalry and there are far more significant rivalries in NCAA Div 1 football that do not involved ND , Michigan v Michigan State, Auburn v Alabama, etc

Typo? I presume you meant USC not BC?

As for the game's relevance, while it is a big deal it is no where near as big a game as we'd like it to be. ND are not the team they once were and there has been a lot of debate in the States over the past few weeks asking why a team that is outside the top 25 and hasn't won a national title in 20 years still gets all the attention it does.

Anyone who follows college football knows the big game this weekend is Michigan v Albama tomorrow night and while there will be a little interest in our game because of the novelty factor, you can guarantee the US media will be more interested in whether Michigan can upset Alabama and whether USC are all they're being made out to be.

BC and ND have a huge Rivalry and battle for the Ireland Trophy when they play. The rivalry created due to the religious beliefs. Some even call it the "Holy War", "The Bingo Bowl" and "The Celtic Bowl". Even though BC aren't really a big opponent anymore it is a very strong rivalry.

It wouldn't be in the same league as Navy, USC or Michigan though would it?

USC would be Notre Dame's biggest rival, without question. Only Michigan could come close.

It really depends on who you talk to.But The USC ND rivalry has been going since 1926 and is the biggest, The Two Michigans since the 1800's and the fact they are so close to each other and Navy since 1914. So based on age yes USC, Navy and the two MI are bigger rivalries you know what they say about old bitter rivals. I went to a BC/ND game a few years back in Alumni and it was crazy full and the away support from South bend was big. Easily half of the small capacity were fighting Irish alumni and students.

If you dont like the comments leave this part of the forum. Are you going to go around every Boards section looking for comments you dont like and attack the poster? You didn't have to come in the AF section at all. Having a go at 2 members is stupid at best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭milos

So It is ok for the posters to comment on their opinion of another sport but it is not ok for someone else to criticise the comment.

You attacked the posters not the post. Read the Boards.ie charter and you will see there is a difference. If you don't like their posts you don't attack them you attack their post its that simple or report them or leave the the AF section. Besides its clear you only came in here to attack said posters who were probably joking anyways or their posts were tongue and cheek.

You are half right I think

Yes GAA does not have an international presence, but as a fan of the sport that does not diminish my interest in it.

American football has a bigger international presence than GAA but it is by no means big, it's a very marginal sport outside the US, but again as a fan that does not diminish my interest in it.

Saying this game is massive outside Ireland is a bit of an overstatement if you ask me.

There will be some interest in it in the US, but nowhere else.
As has been stated it is not even the biggest game on the list tomorrow,
The timing does not help if you ask me, 9am EDT is very early, I would have thought a 12pm EDT (regular start time for many NCAA football games on a Saturday) start would have been used.

Id say the time the game is being played at is to suit both teams schedules and logistics. ND fly out pretty much straight after the game.

It's also in a time slot on its own tomorrow morning (US time) so there'll be no competing games so the ratings should do well
