    Some like it, some don't.

There is a great deal of variety in the work.

Pay is quite low compared to other PDs so officers often leave after a few years, creating a bit of a brain drain.

How come the pay is low. Is it lower then the fdny?

I don't know. I just made up three generic statements and presented them as fact.

I'd say they are true of any police force. Especially in America.

Its more the cost or living in New York than the actual wages. I believe they have increased the pay in the past few years to make it on paper a well paid department.

Would anyone like to join the force if they could. I've always wanted too since I was a child

There used to be a pay inequity between PD and FD in NY, but that has more or less been resolved. As said above though, they are still relatively not as well off compared to other agencies in the region. SOme of it is pay, some of it is cost of living. It's like anywhere...some join to gain experience and move on, others make a career out of it. Its probably like working for any other agency, some good, some bad. A lad I spoke to a while back at a conference pretty much said the above. He liked it and had career plans.

If you want to work there, your first obstacle will be getting through immigration and I don't know if you have to be a citizen. In Texas (post 9-11) you have to be a US citizen to be a peace officer and other states have similar laws.

If you are ever in NYC, I'm sure you could sort out a ride along and get a good insight.

Have a lot of family in the NYPD. Pay was very bad starting off, at one stage Bloomberg gave them a contract that put new recruits $50 a week above getting food stamps. The standard of recruit also dropped as a result. I think the pay at the moment is about $80k after 5 years with all shift allowances etc. Given that you have to live in the 5 boroughs it is not a huge wage. A lot of the PD aspire to join other better paid departments or the FD. A recent class in the NYFD academy had 98 former NYPD out of 100 recruits.

A popular choice is Nassau or Suffolk PD's on Long Island, pay over $100k and a fraction of the hassle. Suffolk where the highest paid PD in the states for a long time and probably still are, huge cost of living though.

My uncle was in the MTV unit for a while (music and television). There job was to stand watch on film locations etc., pure pudding of a job. He was also on a unit in the 70's called the TPF (tactical patrol force), there nickname was the "Irish Goons", the stories he told me where legendaryicon12.gif

Massive department and huge diversity, a lad from Donegal still holds the record as the youngest ever Captain at only 32 years old, equivalent rank to a Superintendent, you'd be doing well making Sergeant in the Gardai at that age.

Salary starts at $44k and rises to $69k after 5 years, $90k after 5.5 years.

Doesn't include overtime which is probably widely available.

Why are they in Dublin (incl. car)? I know that many US citizens came for the football but surely they don't bring their own police and police cars?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm not from around here.

Why is there a NYPD police car in Dublin?

Let's guess at the reason there is a NYPD cruiser with D reg plates driving around Dublin.

    1. The most dogged and determined police officer in the history of mankind happened to see a man jay walking across 5th avenue. He only got a passing glimpse of his face but guessed by the wrangler jeans and ruddy complexion that he was indeed an Irishman. With only the briefest of descriptions he drove straight to the pier in Brooklyn and drove his cruiser on to the next ship bound for the emerald isle. Being a man of the law he drove straight to the revenue office in Dublin port and declared his vehicle, paid the VRT and got the D registration. He has since spent every waking hour trying to track down the scamp who walked across his avenue on a red pedestrian light.

    2. It's a lad with a car that looks like a cop car who does birthdays and such.

    3. Your a idiot. (I'll take the infraction)
