I think it's more to do with the players being "bombed out" of the squad as opposed to the rugby term.
Something that irks me slightly is the whole furore (which seems to have resurfaced due to Chelsea V Benfica) of Jose Mourinho being called "The Special One". He never called himself that, he called himself "a special one" in the original interview.
