I know quite a few of here have cabs and arcade boards.

Say, hypothetically, we put them all on a site in the city centre somewhere (obviously not going to happen!) - with one original game in each - what exactly would our arcade contain/look like?

I'll start with my own - SNK candy 25 with Alien Versus Predator. Almost considered tating it for my Raiden 2 board, but really wouldn't want to steal that from Andrew76 :D

Hmmm, what would I put in my Naomi... :p

Ah you could have Raiden 2 if you liked. I'd either leave mine hori and throw in my beloved Aliens pcb, or rotate and put in my beloved Raiden pcb. Fairly predictable me.

My Egret 3 with either Espgaluda II, Progear, Deathsmiles, Ibara or Metal Slug 3. Probably Metal Slug 3 as it really is one of my favourites.

Ah yes, I forgot you were a big Aliens fan. Can you 1cc that one at all yet? (or even close to it?)

The only way people will play that is if they can insert the coins into your arse with their foot :pac:

Wow, that really is nice seeing a Metal Slug game being chosen over big shmup names like that!

I have to say, I've been playing 3 a lot lately and it really has grown on me - it's a damn killer to play through though. I usually try to stick to 1 credit, but credit fed it a week or so ago just to see the end as it's been a while - holy god, had to give up on the last stage. It seems to go on for an eternity!

Lol you extracting the urine? It's fairly easy to 1cc once you learn where the monsters appear. It's second nature to me at this stage so yep every time I play it I 1cc it. Although technically the game cycles to a second loop as long as you have enough life left and it starts again - slightly harder.

Was actually thinking of recording a run recently but my crappy camera and dire upload speeds put me off doing it.

I've beaten the game a few times, never on 1 credit though but I've come close enough.
Was playing it the other and was about half way through the game and the power went in the whole area :(
I really do think its the best Metal Slug game by quite a bit.

But you can tell us its going to be something amazing that will completely blow our minds, but we have to wait to see it.
And then show up with some folk album from the 60's and and a old record player :D
You know, do a "Pyongy" on it.

    Someone start drawing this

    Defender with multiwilliams board.
    Whirlwind pinball
If there was an empty cabinet I've an original bubble bobble board which spends its time in the defender with a 2player panel

I would drag the G-Net down with G-Darius to keep Pyongy happy!
Also, we can swap it out for XII-Stag as well!
Just need a TV to rotate into Tate mode at will!

I wouldn't mind putting my machines in an arcade; I've an Alien 3 The Gun game and Moon Base Cocktail (doesn't work at the moment but andy's arcade is sending me a replacement board next month or sometime in October)

Alas no, I could have had a twin sit down if I wanted but if physically wouldn't fit through the house...despite actually having room for the bloody thing. So I settled for a stand-up Ridge Racer 1. Actually I got it really cheap from Mitch, due to it needing a deflection chip on the monitor chassis. I got the chip for pittens & replaced it & all was again well in the land of Ridge Racer.

I can't find any stock pics of the stand up RR cab, & I only have this really crap quality pic of it which it looks like everything is covered in dust! Cab is in great condition in person, the usual nicks on the corners etc but otherwise its fairly mint.

Gonna replace the artwork on the Tekken cab at some stage, its in poor enough shape but it'll do for now

Thats pretty cool. Can you stick other driving PCB's in there and use the controls or is it set to Ridge Racer only?

It's a Namco System 22 board (which is HUGE). Not sure what or if the wiring is compatible with other systems. I presume there could be adaptor looms etc, never really looked into it tbh

I do like the look of that I must say. I'd really like to get a few dedicated cabs (few 80's and 90's cabs maybe).
But it's going to have to wait until next year when I open up the retro shop in town as I plan to have 3-6 cabs in there and its a great excuse to grab some nice dedicated ones as well as a couple of candies.

Truly would be a site to behold though
an SNK 25, two Naomi's(are they universals?) Egret 3, SF2 cab, ridge racer, MK2 cab and an Astro City.Someone has new Astro as well I think

Lets rent out a warehouse and have an all night illegal arcade rave.
Problem is everyone would be always eyeballing their cabs to make sure they were alright.
I'd also feel filthy fingering other cabs while mine was with them..have to do it when her back is turned:)

That is a beautiful cab. I was actually playing on one of those a couple of years back, an original in beautiful nick. I was in a diner in California having breakfast. Half way through my pancakes i heard that attract music coming from down the back of the place and like you say, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

My other half was very cool about sitting around drinking free refills of coffee while i played it for quite a while :D

As far as what cab I'd put in a hypothetical arcade, it would have to be Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I love so many of the SF2 games, but this one was the one that really stands out arcade wise. So many 20p coins went into one of these babies back in 92-93....

EDIT: I don't actually own this. Not yet at least. But i will. As soon as i have a space to put it in it's my next project.

    You've sourced a project Sf2 cab?

No, i want to build a reproduction from scratch, but at the moment i just don't have space for it. I've done a restore on a 3/4 size poker machine that i converted into a 2 player MAME before (now sold), and my current cab is a Hyperspin Bartop that i put together about 6 months ago, but i want a streetfighter themed cab, and SF2 Turbo HF is probably the theme I'd go for. Either that or Super street fighter 2 Turbo.

I'm thinking full reproduction artwork, marquee, control panel, etc, possibly based off the Japanese models (because the sanwa hardware is just better for fighters) but running a front end with a custom interface with every version of Streetfighter from SF1 up to the current SF4 series.

It's a long term project though, one of those things i hope I'll get around to, but I've got no idea when.

Would you not try to hunt down a real one? A well made reproduction can be great, but you can't beat a real cab that has been on site somewhere.

Maybe there's something about having "the real thing" but I've never understood how much love some original cabs get, versus reproduction or built to a new design.

Sure there's ridiculous and inexplicable stuff built like you'd see on crapmame but I think there's a lot to be said for picking all new parts as far as reliability and practicality are concerned.

Me? I want either a scratch built bartop or equally scratch built Capcom Cute reproduction (the original looks beautiful, but things about how works would bother me and modding an original to my taste would be a shame).

Well it's simple really, one is real, the other is not! Even if it's a nice reproduction (and I have seen some lovely ones) - it's still not a real arcade machine.

I see it as the difference between owning an original console and one of those newer clones you see around.
    a5y wrote:

They're not very technical machines though. It's a harness, some controls, speakers and a monitor. All is very easy to replace. Practicality is the only thing which should come up. But if you have the room for a real cab with a big CRT monitor then it can't get any better than that.

The main reason to do a reproduction Cute is just because how expensive and hard to come across they are.

As for modding it though... as long as you don't destroy anything. They come with a 6 player CP, JAMMA harnesses can be linked up to a PC - there's nothing you should really need to do which wouldn't be reversable.

Yeah, i get what you're saying, and I'm kinda in two minds about that TBH, both options have their merits, but i think repro is better for me. Real original SF2 cabs generally are hard to come by at good prices and/or have taken a bit of a battering because they were so popular back in the day, so normally they need a lot of work, and also they have all the US stick and button hardware in them (which is muck for anyone who is serious about the game). I would probably be looking at replacing a lot of the stock control panel parts on an original EU SF2 cab for newer sanwa stuff, just purely for the sake of being able to play on a setup that i love, as well as having to probably touch up or replace artwork, kickboards, etc (nevermind worrying about having trouble with the CRT, which is also a distinct possibility on a 15-20 year old cab)

Doing all that is going to leave the cab in a half new, half old, weird hybrid state, and i think i would just rather build a really good faithful reproduction from scratch out of new parts that i know is gonna last me years than deal with having a frankensteiner that's made of stuff from different sources and constantly needs work. Either that or a really good themed original cab that a lot of time and planning went into, which is another distinct possibility.

Me too. I think original cabs, especially woodies, are super super cool, (seriously, major cool points to any one who owns and maintains an original) but they can give a fair bit of trouble or be a bit of a pig to look after, restore, etc. Most of them were never built to last as long as they have, and just by owning one you're opening yourself up to having a permanent work in progress in your life. That's fine if you have the time for that kind of hobby, but with having a kid and an adult to look after as well as myself, i just don't have time to be constantly tinkering with a cab. I already have enough works in progress raising a family, and I'd prefer to build a cab that looks sweet, is made out of all new parts, and just works, all the time, so i can play it when i get a few mins spare in the day.
    a5y wrote: »

I must say, owning a bartop may not get you as much kudos as owning a full size woody or whatever, but i've owned both, and a bartop is super handy if you don't have the space to dedicate to a games room or an entire area to give over to games in your home. My bartop sits over in the corner of the living room out of the way, and can be easily moved or stowed away nicely in a wardrobe if ever needed.

I do miss having a proper full size cab, but bartops are a really great alternative if you don't mind making some compromises.

I have to say I've enjoyed every minute of restoring my MKII cab. You can find the exact same buttons, switches and joysticks, the only difficulties are the potential monitor issues.

As someone mentioned earlier, Midway cabinets are huge and are a real talking point when people see them. For me you just can't beat owning a piece of gaming history and I will be adding another cabinet just as soon as I find my holy grail... An orignal working Killer Instinct cabinet.

Have to say I'd always lean towards real cabs over self-built ones. Some of the DIY ones are really really nice, but to agree with o1s1n, I prefer a 'real' cab thats been on site & has some character. The DIY ones are too clean & pristine :o

Just bring Atavan over, fill him with Captain Morgan's, give him free play on the cab and a box of 20 JP Blue, an hour or so in let him eat a kebab during play.... That'll add the needed ambience to the cab!
