Just out of interest, who here managed to get their hands on one of the Michael Collins double sets?

They were sold out after 2 days I believe, iv pre-ordered mine and guaranteed to get it but still waiting for it in the post.

I've read on other sites people complaining that they couldn't get one, that the central bank weren't answering the phone, etc. Anyone experience this?

The coins on their own are still available, but they should be sold out by the end of the month I'd say.

Yeah I posted my order the day after.

As i said in another topic, the charge was applied by the central bank on my credit card yesterday so I only assume that I will get them tomorrow. :)

I odered the double set by phone last week. At the time they said they wouldn't be posted out until at least a couple of weeks after the release date as they expected to be very busy. My credit card was charged for it yesterday but that probably does not mean it has been sent yet. As far as I am aware, once they have accepted your order over the phone you are guaranteed to get one.

I tried ringing them yesterday to add a gold and silver coin to my order. I rang 20 times between 10:00 and 14:00 but there was no answer. So I took an hour off work and drove in to Dame St instead to get them.

Well I am living in Kerry so I don't have the luxury of just driving 'up the road' to them :)

I never did a phone order, I always just filled up the form, mainly because there usually isn't a rush.

Well i suppose there was a rush with the Antarctic coins, which I still regret to this day that I didn't buy one of them. I didn't even buy the silver one on its own! Just didn't have the money, still in school, etc.

Someday I get one of them, but finding someone selling the double set, which there were only 1000 of, will be difficult.

My card was debited yesterday & they arrived today. In 2006 for the proof set the CB took my order & I got a ref: number but I was to far down the list to get a set from the CB. So i dont trust them much

I know him well and know where he lives.....thats enough :D

Once I get some money together, I want to purchase the 2007, 2009 and 2012 proof sets. Which one do you expect to sell out first? In other words, how long more have I left before I must purchase them?

I think they are around 70 or 80 each yes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

Backfire there were 10,000 of the Proof 2007 set made and 5,000 of the 2009 and 2012 sets. All are currently still in stock from the collector coin unit. The 2012 set is €70, but the 2007 and 2009 sets are €80.

yeah i know the mintage figures, I am just wondering how many are left for each one?

I should buy them sometime this year before they are all gone, otherwise I would be regretting not having bought them.

Just like the Antarctic set, I should have made an effort to get the €5 silver coin, noway could I afford the gold one at the time (going to college ;) )

The only one who would have an idea of what is left is someone in the collector unit in the CB. I'd ring them to see if they could let you know which one they the the lowest stock of. Then you would know which one to get 1st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭MasterSun

They were sold out in less than 36 hours to be exact.

I work in the suburb and i don't trust the postal system, i paid an umeployed friend of mine to get it for me.

cheers mate, I may do that, or I could send them an email or watever.

yeah 36 hrs to sell 6000 is pretty impressive, many people wanted the double set. A guy sold a set for €250 on Donedeal.

Well I would ring them and explain that you can't afford it at the moment etc. You should get a more open response talking on the phone. Generally they don't like saying when they have too much stock as they want people to think they're running out so they'll buy them quicker.

Many individuals ordered them a week or so in advance and dealers were able to order larger quantities of them well before that. I doubt the CB in Dame st. got much of that share, most sets will have gone to foreign dealers.

Personally I don't see the fascination with the double sets. If you look back at the 1966 proof 10 shilling double sets which are as rare as hens teeth, they still only fetch twice what the single proofs do, so no extra premium for it being a double case.

Yeah ok I will give them a ring someday soon and see what they say. I want to first ensure that I get my collins coins in the post. Actually I got an email from them this evening confirming that my order has been processed, I don't know whether they posted them yesterday or today, but I should have them by the end of the week.

I like have the double coin set for their presentation and increased rarity, I really don't care what they are worth in cash, as I will never sell them. My mission is to get all the main commemorative euro coins by the CB, I have a good chunk of them, but iv a good few that I do not have.

This includes the samuel beckett set, the common hamilton 10 euro, the Antarctic set, that one from 2004 with the swan on it, and the 10 euro special olympics coin. I have all the rest. Except the proof sets.

And of course since I am on the mailing list, I have a reduced chance of missing out on one....unless the asking price is large. Like the Antarctica set.

I have 14 1966 shillings, but none of them are in their original package or cert. All were obtained in watever the coin dealer had them in. Also found 4 of them in a box in my grandfather's old house. Condition of all of them are...well VF i suppose, or better.

    @pawrick: Nice! :)

Been doing the same - slowly buying new Irish coins but with a preference to ones I like the look of. I'm not fond of the look of this or the previous issue by the CB but for a purely historical aspect I had to get them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

I got my Collins double set in the post this morning. I'm impressed they sent them out so quickly. I thought I would be waiting for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

I have just had a closer look at the double set and there is one thing I don't like about it. The hinges stick out from the box and catch on the white outer cardboard sleeve when you slide it on or off. If you are not careful you will rip the outer sleeve completely. It's a minor complaint though. Otherwise it's lovely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭robert2000

There still are a few 2007 and 2009 proof sets as of last week, but I would leave it for a bit as it's mad down in collector coin at the moment with all the Michael Collins coins being sent out

yeah just make sure you slide your box back in the same side as it was originally in. What I mean is the white cardboard would have formed a crease and use this side for the hinges every time, you wont tear it then ;)

I know because I got my double set in the post today, with cert number 00368 :)

The box is lovely but the only thing I can complain about is the fact that the hinges are not spring loaded, just when you open it up, it can easily flap back down, again...I know, minor complaints :)

If anyone in just interested in following this, here is a link to an auction on Ebay of a double set of michael collins coins.

Current bid is at €155 with 4 days 8hrs left.

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/271041958809?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

People are willing to pay big money for the double set even though they can get the coins cheaper by purchasing them separately.

This auction will give you an indication of what your double set is worth ;)

I have been looking for a polar year double set for around a year now. I have seen nine of them sell during that time. One went for as low 650, one went for as high as 950. All the rest sold for between 750 and 850. I have seen plenty listed at higher prices but they don't sell.

The one on adverts has been there for a long time. There is one on ebay at the moment also looking for 1200. There was one on ebay Germany that has been relisted about three times in the last couple of months, the minimum bid has slowly come down from around 1000 to 880 . But it still isn't selling.

I think a couple of these sets have sold over the years for silly money like 1200 to 1500. This means that everyone who owns one thinks that that is what they will get for them. However in the real world that is not what they are selling for.

I'd love to get one and I would be willing to pay up to 800 for one (maybe 850 including postage) but I wouldn't go higher than that myself.

I remember at the time that the double set was originally sold for €395 by the CB yes? To sell at €800 is impressive.

So, the auction I have just posted a link to will be one of those 'crazy' ones, where the coins reach a very large price, mainly due to the fact that the coins are fresh in people's minds, huge competition and people who have plenty of money...? :)

The current bid on the michael collins double set is €202.50 with 3 days and 23 hrs left!! I think €200 is a high price for the set, I cannot see how something can double its value in less than a week after it is released. Then again, I am no expert on coin markets :)

I am not surprised the silver is sold out, I expect it to take a few weeks, even months to sell out the gold, I think the silver coin appealed to a lot of people who are not coin collectors as such, they bought it as a historic symbol, or it just looks more impressive than the tiny gold one (which it does i have to admit :) )

EDIT: @ podgeandrodge: thanks for the link but I am afraid that 1,200 euro is way out of my budget :)

I think last time we spoke about this I tried to bid on a couple of double sets but didn't win them. I did manage to get one of the single gold coins around that time for a good price. But not the double set. I am holding out for a reasonable price. I'll get one eventually. If you do see one drop me an e-mail.

    hey guys,

I am slowly working towards my collection of modern commemorative euro coins, I just purchased the silver €10 hamilton coin on ebay for €43 + €3pnp.

Is this a good price do you think?

I know the mintage figure is high for this coin, around 30,000, but never got around to getting one until now.

I posted off the form and ordered a set, but I'd say they were sold out by the time the form got to them. Which is a bit unfair unless they kept some for the postal forms. Shur we'll see, but I have my doubts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 992 ✭✭✭Eglinton

I posted off my order for the double set the day before they went on sale (using the order form they send out with the usual mailings I get). I haven't got anything yet.

Nothing has been deducted from my credit card yet. Should I be worried that they're all gone or it is just slow backlog?

They were very quick with my order last month; got my order about three days after I posted the form.

Well what I say to anyone who posted their forms before the launch day of the coin, In my opinion you should get one! its only fair!

The reason why I say this is because when you post a form, it is received in Dublin the following day (may take 2 days if you are posting all the way from the west coast, like kerry or Mayo ) but still....the coin did not sell out until August 17th.

If you posted your form on the 14th, then they should have got it by the 16th, it is not your fault if your order form wasn't opened by them and coin set reserved.

I'd say the forms coming in were checked, and thats why suddenly the 2 coin set was sold out early thursday morning. Technically they should reserve the coin set for you before processing your order. I'd imagine they should.

You can always ring them or send them an email asking them. Don't give up hope yet :)

My brother talked to the coin collector unit about this issue. They said that phone orders were entered directly onto the computer system. That meant that as soon as the coins were officially released the customers were charged and the coins shipped quickly.

The postal orders were all opened up and the number of coins ordered was noted. The actual individual oders details were not entered into the system or payments taken at that time. That way, they new how many coins needed to held aside for postal orders. But the actual orders with names and addresses and payment details and things would not be entered on the computer system until they could get to them. So the coins are reserved for postal customers and will be sent as they get through the manual processing of the orders. (Could take days or weeks).

Was there major interest in the gold celtic cross coin last year? I got one but didn't think it was a coin in huge demand, did it sell out fast?

Also, I got my Hamilton 10 euro coin in the post today, lovely coin indeed, greater imagination in its design, more recent coins don't match it.

The design of the Hamilton coin won a prize. Here is a link to an article about it on the Central Bank website http://www.centralbank.ie/press-area/press-releases/Pages/CentralBankCoinWinsMajorInternationalPrize.aspx

The Celtic Cross Gold coin from 2011, sold out almost immediately, even faster than the Collins double sets. The original price was €40. They don't come up on eBay too often but when they do they often sell for over €100.

Do you have the Gasice - The president's award double coin set from 2010?
There were only 4000 double sets sold, I wonder was there much interest in them at the time. I bought one at the time myself alright, its a lovely coin set.

There is only 3 to the animal coin set planned, there wont be ones for the bull, pig, hen, etc.
