A French period piece that's worth a look ,but not as good as Le Reine Margot IMO.

'The Virgin Queen' starring Bette Davis. Made in 1955 and directed by Henry Koster it also stars Richard Todd as Sir Walter Raleigh and a stunningly pretty young Joan Collins as a court maiden, Beth Throgmorton.

Watched Alex Cross (Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Ed Burns, Jean Reno, John C. McGinley), Giancarlo Esposito (briefly!))last night only as I liked the Morgan Freeman Alex Cross movies. The worst film I've seen in a long, long time. Tyler Perry in the lead looks like he's auditioning for a role in Fair City, whilse most of the other cast look like they're embarrassed to be there. Matthew Fox is barely recognisable such is his physical transformation into a zero body fat lean muscle assassin, but he starts really hamming it up after the opening scene. Jean Reno must owe a lot of tax somewhere to stoop this low and I assume Giancarlo Esposito was doing his one scene for a bet. There's too many continuity errors to even list, the stunts look like stuff you'd see in tv movies, the explosion you can see in the trailer is so fake it's laughable and the story and overall acting are a joke.

Trailer below - as bad as it is, it's better than the movie!

I'd like to say "so bad it's good", but it's just awful. I only stayed watching as I was lauging so much at it (in places). 2/10.

Documentary about New York Cosmos soccer team hitting the heights in the 70's with Beckenbauer, Pele etc etc. it's called 'Once In A Lifetime' and is very interesting.

    Gangster Squad

The final death nail in the coffin for reviews. I mostly trust my own opinion anyway. When I heard the cast involved for this I thought it sounded interesting. When the trailers arrived I liked them so much that I became really excited about it. However, mediocre reviews put me off.

I wish I had listened to my gut. I really enjoyed it. I can understand why other people didn't care for it much though, but for me personally, I'd give it about 73.298759342975719759437598798769353457989978243609245679246792476924769769679856798567956794729046724986792%.

Ordet - Carl Th. Dreyer's beautiful, engaging meditation on crises of faith and belief. Reminded me of Bergman's work on the same topic, albeit with a lot of completely unique things to say. The characters all represent various plains of belief - from non-existent to mad, delusional faith - and it's a deeply compassionate and human film. As a secular viewer, its intellectually engaging as it critiques some of the hypocrisies of organised religion, but also paints an honest and compelling picture of the the various characters and their individual beliefs.

Shot in long, intense takes, for the most part the film only cuts to emphasise a change of location or time (notably barring one sort of 'montage' towards the end). Unlike the director's Passion of Joan of Arc with its loyal alliegance to the close-up, the film mostly stays wide until the emotionally charged, astonishing conclusion. More than anything IMO, the iconic final minutes suggest that one of the most powerful belief systems of all is faith in the power and (im)possibilities of art and cinema.

I enjoyed it, i think people were expecting a more serious gangster flick cause of the cast involved. But it was more of a comic book feel to it, Sean Penn wasn't that great in it and Emma Stone was wasted in it as was Ryan Gosling ( a guy with A-lister looks who works better in Indie films for me). Worth watching once but was one of my letdowns even though i taught it was good.

I saw one of the Twilight movies (don't ask me which one) dubbed in to Spanish on a long bus journey in Spain. Garbage. It did help with brushing up on learning some Spanish, but it was awful. Even dubbed in to Spanish couldn't save it.

Have great memories of watching "Dark City" on a long bus journey in Spain about 10 years ago, really made the time fly.

Mutant Girls Squad - A pictorial review should suffice for this one (on a brief critical note, I would recommend watching the superior Karate Robo Zaborgar instead). Please note since this is a family website I have declined to include shots of 'ass chainsaw girl'.

"The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire" (1971) - from YouTube via my wii. Murder mystery thriller set in Dublin. A beautiful young woman has acid thrown in her face, her throat cut and then turns up in the boot of the car belonging to the Swiss Ambassador to Ireland. Interesting chiefly as a snapshot of how Dublin looked almost 45 years ago - plenty of classic cars (and buses) and the Hibernia Sealink boat at Dun Laoghaire.

As a movie, it's a train wreck - aimless plot, very poor acting, atrocious camera work, woeful dubbing and special effects, strange "Oirish" accents dubbed onto Irish actors like Niall Tobin who plays a doctor you don't ever want to meet! Amongst the cast of nobodys is Anton Diffring - the Swiss Ambassador - (an actor usually cast in the role of a Nazi officer - e.g. Where Eagles Dare) and one can only hope he was well paid for his part in this rubbish. 1/10 and that's for the location/cars etc. If your a vehicle enthusiast, or a masochist, the movie is available on YouTube (below) and on DVD - scarce.

PS - I forgot to say, check your pulse if you're not laughing out loud after the opening brutal murder scene! :D

    Willard (1971)

I am huge fan animals attack people in the movies, From Good old From The Birds to Cujo, even the really b movie like Black Sheep.

I was not sure what I expected from this movie but I did not expected it to be a slow as it was.

This is very slow moving movie, for most of the movie we see Willard who just turned 27 year old, Having one of those bad day,s seem to get worse as weeks go on,

He got no Friends and He boss bullies him and never raisers and He mum is fallen sick and calling help , when he get home and soon passes , leaving not money and then ends up loses the house

The only spare time he get he hanger out new little Friends in Garden,

I did expect Horror movie but This is not Horror movie at all, Nothing was scary or creepy or was that gory or Bloody either.

With all these bad stuff happening and get closer to rat he really start to lose in mind in some scene.

I was really gutted that there was only one attack scenes in this movie, it was over a little to quick.

The acting was really good from the whole cast

    5 out of 10

Of see Ben (1972) Which is a sequel then I see the remake

Is this the one about the kid and the rats(s)?

About Twilight. I saw the first one not having a clue what it was about, only knowing that it was about vampires..... Jesus Mary and Joseph, thank god for streaming so I didn't pay to watch that pile of rubbish. Precious time of my life that I will never get back. Needless to say never bothered with the other 3 4 or 20 sequels.

Wow, cheers for that!! I love any sort of footage of Dublin from the 60's/70's but a whole movie! Sweet

    Yeah that ones

    Ben (1972)

This movie start of showing the last few moment of Willard (1971) and he see Willard been attacked by this Rats.

Ben the leading of the Rats who are seeing the Police and reports taking the body out of the house.

A Crowd gathers outside to see what the fuse his, then movie on to this Family a little Boy called Danny who as heart Condition.

Soon becomes Friends with Ben, as that He only Friends, The most of the movie he keep safe from poilce and everyone.

This movie did have a lot more action in this movie, as Rats this terrorizes most of the City.

There a lot of attack in this movie, (As it was PG movie) The attack scenes were not gory or bloody but I found them decent enough for the time.

I really liked the Warm Connections with Danny and Ben, It very nice, I was rooting for Ben for most of the movie (He A Legend :P )

One thing I didn't like about this movie, the Tunnle scene was bit too long, you could tell some of effect were a bit strange. When burning Rats, as the fire goes some parts of Rats , Thankfully they showed rats on fire , looks fire is over the rats in way. (If that make sense)

I liked the ending of the moving ever movie, I got About that Michael Jackson Ben song , Which Starts in the last scenes in the movie to make it more moving to Sad/Happy scenes, it fits in perfectly.

The acting for this movie was really good from Cast!

7 out of 10 really good movie

Ya, I agree with everything you said (and even if I didn't I would defend with my life your right to say it.) I CAN NOT WAIT for Only God Forgives. I've thought Nicolas Refn was great since I saw the Pusher movies. He is unique. It's not just for Ryan I'm looking forward to it.

Man, I'm gonna end up watching this :D
Another movie that offers a good look at Dublin circa 1970 is Quackser Fortune Has A Cousin In The Bronx. Gene Wilder plays a Dublin man (no, really), complete with ropey Dublin accent, who wanders the streets with his cart collecting horse manure to sell. He meets and falls for an out of his league Trinity student played by Margot Kidder (no, really). Set in and around Stoneybatter and Phibsborough. This is a cult classic, and as luck would have it, it's playing in Trinity during Trinity week this Wednesday at 12.10! A rare chance to see it.
I saw it in the film festival a few years ago, it was showing in The Gravediggers pub in Glasnevin (It's Quackser's local in the film, in the trailer at 25 seconds). I think I may have to go and see it again!

Watched two low budget Easter horror films over the holidays.

    Easter Bunny Bloodbath:

It kind of seems like the guys involved couldn't decide whether to make this a horror comedy or a straight horror drama. I won't lie, you won't be guessing who the killer is. There's a couple of funny moments, and a couple of moments where I cringed for the actor involved. The effects are OK for a low budget movie. One really annoying thing was the screen splatter, where blood would be put on the image in whatever editing software they used, like it was splashed on the lens. I could have done without that. As far as deaths go, it was pretty top notch, a real gore laugh. As far as super low budget indie movies go, 5 / 10. Nothing special, just kind of OK, a pretty generic teenagers in the woods fare.

    Kottontail:

This film knows EXACTLY what it is. A super low budget schlock fest. It oozes z-grade charm, from the script to the "Special effects." Dude gets bitten by a genetically engineered "Rabbit", turns into a rabbit man. Five women have to kill him. It is exactly what you think it is as soon as you read five women (But not porn). The script is hysterical, and the scenes with the rabbit had me curled over laughing. Actors are used in multiple roles, sets are reused with no effort to hide it, the stop motion parts were clearly done in about 45 seconds. A low budget rating of 8 / 10. Out of the two, see this, it's a great laugh, and it has hot chicks.

Been a Refn fan before he hooked up with Gosling. Still think the Pusher trilogy is one of the best trilogies around, Brosnan and Valhalla Rising are great art house films. Bleeder is a hughly underrated film probably his most depressing. Drive, one of the best films of the last few years. Only God Forgives, going by the Trailer looks like its going to be strange but out of this world.

Been on a Joseph Gordon Levitt watch the last few days. To think the young kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun would become one of the more interesting of American actors over the years.

    50/50

50/50 was advertised as a "comedy about cancer," which hardly sounds like a good idea for a movie, especially one that was advertised as "from the creators of Superbad". Cancer is obviously a very delicate subject, and there was as much risk that 50/50 could become too goofy and insensitive for its own good as there was for it to become too melodramatic and manipulative. I'm glad to say that the film is surprisingly poignant, realistic, and funny. For every crude joke, there are enough interesting character dynamics and real human emotions in this to make it a solid, thoroughly enjoyable and heart-wrenching film. That fine balance between comedy and drama can partly be attributed to Will Reiser, who wrote the story and script based on his ownexperiences with cancer. The script manages to find enough humor in Adam's situation, mostly thanks to his friend Kyle's attempts at cheering him up (such as using his cancer to pick up girls). However, the story also makes sure to deal with the serious issues around the disease too, such as how Adam handles his situation and the various ill-effects of cancer treatment, as well as how his diagnosis effects his relationships with his overbearing mother, and his girlfriend

The best part of the movie though, is quite easily Joseph Gordon Levitt as Adam. Levitt was perfectly cast in this role, and a lot of what I said about the film "not getting melodramatic" can be credited to his understated performance. He does a wonderful job of showing us what Adam is going through, from the initial shock, to his early optimism, and finally his succumbing to the fear that he really has no hope of survival. Watching Adam's journey, you really feel like you're getting to know him as a person, and understand what he's going through, which makes the climax all the more emotional. I can't imagine anyone reaching this scene without their heart racing, or even shedding a few tears.

Its strange alright but thats the charm of it for me. It starts off like you are expecting a Viking action flick but you end up getting a Agure Wrath of God art house film with Vikings going slightly crazy.
