Maybe five years ago I was over 20st and I've been slowly improving my lifestyle and diet and generally chipping away at my weight. At this stage I'm 30, I weigh about 13.5st and I'm 6'4" and my build is on the slim side of strong. People, including my physio refer to my as 'skinny' but nevertheless I have this gut that I wish to get shot of if I can.

At the moment, I'm still recovering from a shoulder/ collarbone injury that required surgery/ plates and screws. My surgery was about 12 weeks ago and I'm making a good recovery, thankfully. My physio has advised that I could start thinking about join a gym to aid my recovery, which would be the first time for me, as I've never been sporty.

I virtually never snack. I eat pretty well at meal times, I don't drink and I walk considerable distance most days yet the belly remains. What can I do?

I'm also 30 and I had a plate put in on my clavicle about 15-16 months ago. I don't know what your physio has you doing, but I can tell you that the routine I was given to fix up my shoulder ended up being a fairly decent workout in itself. Even if I wasn't using the gym for anything other than my physio routine I think it would have been worth the membership - having access to a good range of dumbbells and a cable machine made all the difference.

For ages I my gym session consisted of a bit of a run, my shoulder exercises and then some leg work. Having a bad shoulder meant that I couldn't go heavy on a lot of the leg exercises, but by doing exercises that focus on one leg it was possible to keep it challenging without going that heavy.

Thanks for that matey. I got my clavicle plate in May and two more on my shoulder blade (I win!!). I'm mainly doing stretching exercises at the moment because of lack of mobility. I also lost a lot of muscle mass in the area because it took more than two weeks to get to a proper hospital :o

The other problem I have is that I used to run and had to give it up because of my duff right knee. People keep telling me I don't need to lose any more weight but I'm just not sure what I can do to get rid of this belly...
