Hey, I'm going into first year in Contemporary Culture and Society.

Was just wondering will people be attending all of those lectures during orientation wk? Is it worth taking time off work to attend them?

Also, the timetable on my portal page... Is that likely to change? It says "last updated September 13th".

    Thanks! :)

    Hey,

Don't know if its any use to you but I was over in DCU checking out the parking situation for myself this week.

I am also starting 1st year.

Anyway parked in general car park opposite business building and got ticket spent about an hour walking round getting my bearings and when I came back to pay met this very helpful man who worked for DCU car park. He took my ticket off me and told me that the hourly charge was 1 euro per hr. He explained that there is a ticket available for 7 euros that lets you come in and out of this car park 6 times with no time limit restrictions and that this ticket is valid for 3 months from day of purchase and to use that instead. So you can stay for 1 hour or 24 it's up to you no extra charge involved.

There are 2 student car parks I think he said and to get to them you again enter DCU from Collins Avenue turn right at roundabout pass reception and business building follow road round and they are located at next roundabout.

The guy from DCU says they are pretty full by 8.45 am and the general car park tend to be full by 11am so my advice to you would be what he recommended to me - buy the 7 euro ticket and that way if the student car park is full you may get a spot in the general car park. He strongly advised against parking on the roads outside. Apparently you can get clamped - its rampant there!

So I would recommend you visit DCU over the weekend and get this ticket as you can't use the student car park until you have your student card etc. The car park is located opposite reception and the business building. Turn into DCU from Collins Avenue at roundabout turn right and its just there on the right.

Hope that clears things up for you.

    Best Of Luck

    Alex

Just a quick Q. Is the student levy included in the €1163?

Quick question for Masters students: I've seen friends of friends talking on Facebook about taking class this week for their masters. Are we all in this week or is it just some courses? No lectures on Monday or Tuesday for me, but just trying to figure out whether I'm in tomorrow or not...

Something just dawned on me. I remember reading that ALIS modules are run on a demand basis, yes?So there's a chance I may have to switch modules if not enough people choose it? Hope not.

The only module that is ever generally at risk is beginner level Chinese.. demand basis applies in most courses, yet in most cases, nothing changes! I wouldn't worry about it.. last year nobody was forced to change any modules!

Is there some schedule for the upcoming freshers week in DCU, because I have no clue what's going on. Someone enlighten me, please!

    Grand so.

Similar Q now. When I was picking my Modules I went over the 60 credits, so I just knocked one off the list. (Spanish Literature...). People in my course are saying that that Module is mandatory for intermediate Spanish. Is that true? Will I be expected to turn up to those lectures even though I'm not registered for them?

I just had a quick look at the 1st modules to see if I could help but it seems they've changed the entire ALIS module system since last year! Your best bet would just be to mail your course coordinator or your Spanish lecturer and ask them if you need that module or not.

You would not be expected to turn up for a module you're not registered for anyway. However, if you do NEED that module you need to get it registered asap!

Thanks, I emailed the lecturer and it seems I do need that module. I think Change of modules is next week, and I'm pretty sure it can be done online too right? No hassle. :)

Yup, you can change for free next week. I don't know if you can do it online. I changed a module last year and had to get a form from the Registry office, which was then signed by my course coordinator and handed back into Registry.
